Hmmm are you talking about Geomon by any chance?

It’s an N64 game but matched your description

It has a ps1 game but the ps1 game is 2d. The n64 game is 3d.

One I can think of atm is an action rpg called Blaze & Blade

It even has local co-op, if you got a friend to play with.

For something guess a bit more modern, there's a game called Deadcraft, which is like an action rpg mixed with farming, crafting, and survival stuff, and as someone that especially despises the latter two, this game implements it in a way that doesn't really detract from the main gameplay, like there isn't a bajillion of items you need for crafting, and the survival mechanics don't have your char constantly die of thirst or hunger every 5 minutes, so I personally quite enjoyed it.

Threads of Fate is the most similar to BFM, it's also from Square
Other options are:
Alundra
Alundra 2
Brave Prove

And that's pretty much it on the PS1, unless you want games from ther consoles

The japanese game might be Tenchu

I might be stretching things a bit but I'd add Soul of the Samurai.

I need to check this Goemon series properly, looks so cool!
But I don't think that's the game unless I see a loading screen or level that matched the memory.
In the Goemon games, can you get on the roof?
It's possible I'm mixing up two different games but that's what I remember.
It was played on a PS1 console and probably a 3D game.
I've tried looking at all the PS1 action RPGs on a screenshot website (forgot the name, might have been a French site) and MobyGames doesn't allow a full search for free.

Not sure if it was Blaze and Blade, I'll check more gameplay and see if it triggers any memories.
Someone once suggested it might be Legend of Legaia but I have yet to see gameplay that matches.
I hope you enjoy Geomon. It’s a unique franchise! As I said, I recommend the n64 game.

Do you know any games that look kind of similar to Brave Fencer Musashi?
Looking for PS1 action RPGs especially if your character can attack with a sword, preferably with realtime combat instead of turn based.

Many years ago I saw an obscure PS1 game similar to it, a village with huts or older Japanese houses.
It might have been in Japanese, I don't remember.
Your character looked like it had samurai hair like Musashi and you could get on the hut roof but it might be bad memory or a fever dream lol.
But I've never been able to find it again.

Would you be thinking of Azure Dreams?
