Hi all, and thank you for reading.

TLDR: Searching for an adaper to the get the PS1 Classic Controller to work on the original PS1. No luck yet.

I have a PS1 hooked up to a Sony CRT and all is looking 90's good.
Or so I thought. Since my old PS1 controller has a wonky D-pad, I ordered a 8BitDo Retro Receiver for PS.
PS4/PS5 Controller connects fine 19/20 times. (1/20 the analog stick will not response, or autopress in a direction)
But one insane bonus I didn't know about beforehand, is that the analog sticks work as D-pads out of the box, which is super comfy for RPG's.

When it comes to playing more precise games like Rage Racer. I absolutly love the original D-pad on the PS1 controller. And since I have the PS1 Classic, the best thing about the console is the two controllers that come with it. WOW, brand spanking new crispy PS1 controller in a plastic bag. So wouldn't it be awsome to use this on the PS1?

I'm super stuck now. Naive me tried to connect it to the USB port of the 8BitDo Retro Receiver for PS. Should have know the port was for firmware upgrade.

All google searches find answers the oposite way. (using the orginal PS1 controller on PC/Switch etc.)

But there was hope. There was one Reddit thread where they talked about a holy saviour, the Brook PS4 to PS2/PSClassic adapter. The old one.
One poster even claimed the PS1 Classic Controller worked with the orginal PS1. So I bought one.... And no. It doesn't work. No sign of life. Even after firmware update. PS4/PS5 controllers work though, so the adapter is not broken. Even tried to give it more USB power with the dongle that comes with the adapter. AND tried it on the PS2 with same results.

Anyone here have a solution? Guess I can buy a real controller from Ebay. But I feel so comitted now finding an adapter :)

yes, the PS1 classic controller doesn't actually work with og consoles - you head over to ebay or amazon and get an actual ps1 controller :/ (completely with you about rage racer here)

Ya unless you make something yourself....

The original PSX controller uses a proprietary, non-USB 9-pin serial connector and doesn't work like the PS Classic's USB connector. So basically like @junkman said go buy an original PSX controller. Make sure it has analog, for the love of whatever god you pray to.

That's a very niche concept and would require a load of work. You would been some form of USB HID host on a micro-controller which converts the presses on the controller to the SPI interface of the PlayStation controller / memory card interface. There will probably be noticeable lag!

You would probably have better results from using a Dualshock 3 or SIXAXIS and a wireless adapter for the PlayStation 1/2.
