When looking for new games to play, what genres do you usually look into?
Which ones are the most likely you will find someting of interest, or maybe even a hidden gem, so to speak.

Me personally, I am inclined towards:
-Fighting Games
-Caravan Style Shmups

first person shooters, i guess, though nothing veering into realism or military sim. i guess i also like 2D platformers but lean toward stuff with less reliance on bottomless pits. i would say i like stealth games a lot too but that one tends to get me extra picky and critical of a game's systems or what i hold as the standard.

Used to be crazy into ARPG's, but they kinda blow these days, every once in a while you get something cool though.
My go-to's lately are Character Action, Beat-em-up's, and FPS.
Been playing Call of Juarez and F.E.A.R lately, and I did a couple runs of Streets of Rage 4 last week.

OG FEAR my beloved.... my favourite game to play on the hardest difficulty without using the slow mo. The lean mechanic is so busted and the enemy AI is amazing.

I've been playing it. I really like it, but I think so far I prefer Bound in Blood. Seems like the first two really delved deep into the realism aspect and I thought that was cool. It's sort of missing in Gunslinger. The Cartel is just goofy lol. I love westerns though. Used to watch Bonanza, The Rifleman, and Walker, Texas Ranger with my great grandma after school as a kid. Me and her made it to Chapter 4 of Red Dead Redemption 2 before she passed. One of these days I gotta get through that second playthrough for her. It was my second playthrough when we started, I knew as I played it that she'd love it. She liked the story and we made it a thing every weekend to sit and play a bit of it. Her dementia started getting bad around the time we started Chapter 4 and she passed not long after. Idk why that came up but you know. I like westerns lol.

Though I would usually just go and say fighting games, it really depends. As long as it's nothing RPG like (they really drag on for me, I don't have time for 40-50 hour games where you just walk around and scroll menus, though I did beat FF6 and 7 in the past), or maybe sports, chances are I might look. This year I went for Doom 2016, Euro Truck Simulator 2, SVC Chaos, Mortal Kombat X, goddamn Heavy Rain (lol), Crash NST, the Dead Space Trilogy last year.

First person Dungeon Crawlers

Arcade or Fantasy sport games

Tower Defense

Survival Horror

But my favorite of them all is Action RPG

Single player RPGs with a good story are typically my favored genre.

I've been really into ESO lately. Despite it being an MMO, I find myself fairly invested in all of the small side quests. I'm working on clearing Northern and Southern Elsweyr rn.

Whatever looks/sounds cool

While I also could say I have a greater focus on fighting games like Akira, genre usually doesn't affect what games I choose to play. I normally pick games that match the mood I'm in, which encompasses nearly every genre except for modern day shooters.

I'd say I tend to have a greater preference towards developers and publishers (Capcom, Squaresoft, etc.) rather than a big preference on genres.

i play anything except modern shooter games
but these are my favorit type of games
rpg
srpg
real time strategy
ww1 and ww2 games

My man. Though to be honest, I thought RPGs would be a good library to go through but the amount of time you'll end up wasting is incredible. Generally, I find it's best to go with public opinion on this genre to avoid squandering an incredibly irresponsible amount of time.

Similar to OP

Fighting (preferably 2D) and Shoot'em ups /bullet hell
Now this I understand completely. Short run times mean more fun and less frustration. Unfortunately, like with RPGs, there are a LOT of wannabes in those two genres that will make you break things.
