I find that I’m too often playing video games and feeling dejected and discouraged and a failure. This comes in games where I make little to no progress on. So I’ll sit down and try to play three or four games, but it’s the same outcome on each.

Do you find yourself just playing games you know that you’ll enjoy and are able to advance in, or do you try impossible tasks like me and feel worse afterwards?

It discourages me from wanting to play these games anytime soon. It’s a bummer because I was hoping to enjoy my time playing today.

That's sad to hear man, I've experienced it too sometimes. But what I would do in this kind of situation is, just take a break. It's not wrong to feel guilty about it, because that's part of the progress. I used to struggled a lot in Metroid Fusion fighting Yakuza and Nightmare, even with tutorials. I decided to take a really long break like a week or even months.

It is important to take a break and not constantly trying to get immediate success in these games. And yes I've always been like that too, always wanted to complete or at least have a huge progress in the game in one sitting or session, but eventually I realised my limits and stop trying for a moment. So take a rest and release those negative thoughts because sometimes, you have to lose to win

That might mean that the games are actually not fun? I usually don't need to make much progress to have fun with a good game, while with not so good games I might drop the moment they present any challange. Given an opportunity I might sometimes deliberately NOT make progress in a good game to enjoy it for longer, while I would gladly skip over everything I can skip over in a not so good game.

Good game example - dmc 3, I can spend forever playing the arena (endless mode with increasingly difficult enemies thrown at you) in easy mode, never getting too far or getting any good at the game itself (I can barely do the most basic combos).

Not so good game example - dark souls, it's cool, it's hype, I want to git gut and see more of it, but the gameplay itself is just jarring and not enjoyable, progression is the only reason to play that game.

There are even games which are designed for you to fail often and loose all progress - roguelikes, you can try some of those to change your mindset and be more attuned to enjoying the gameplay and not just progression.

I’m genuinely confused what the title is asking about. I guess I’ll say I like beating games whenever I can. I never see beating games as an impossible task since it’s just a video game.

Most games were created so you could beat them, no matter how hard they are. And sometimes the fun comes from trying to overcome that impossible task.

I think my aggravation comes from the fact that I’m trying to play the games that I own. One of those is the Sonic Genesis Collection for the Ps3. So a lot of those are classics, but also it can be “game over” really quickly. And then I tried Mortal Kombat for ps3 and couldn’t make it past the stage I’m on in the story mode. So yeah…

If I want to enjoy what I play and also make progress, it’s best if I stick to FIFA or Gran Turismo for me personally. I just felt since I have all these other games, I should try to play them more often too.

Those are all some good points. Thanks for sharing. I’m not that good and don’t advance far in games most of the time either.

I have been able to enjoy some arcade style or nes games more, which don’t have the save option.

I used to feel that a lot when i was younger, not so much nowadays. Back then i viewed games as tasks too, even if i didn't admit it. In my head i had this obligation to finish every game that i started, or else i would view myself as a failure. And to no one surprise, i didn't enjoy playing these games, stop them half way through, either because i couldn't figured out how to progress or i got bored of it(and i got bored really fast, remember that i viewed than as tasks).
When i stopped having this need in my head to finish everything and just focus on having fun, i was able to enjoy more the games that i played and, funnily enough, i've finished them with a higher frequency than before.
So my advice to you is don't worry about progress too much and focus more on the things you like about the games you play, whether is the gameplay, the story, the music, whatever it is. If you're stuck, use a guide or walkthrough to progress. There's no shame in doing that, we're not perfect human beings with all the answers to all problems. Using a guide to progress just show how much you like a game and is dedicated to experience it.
Yeah, that's my 2 cents on the matter. Sorry for the long text, it's something that resonate with me.

What matters is that you should take it slow and steady, play what you can play, don't stress yourself okay?
