Although the Original Sonic Drift came out internationally through Sonic Mega Collection Plus on PS2 and XBOX in 2004.
It actually came out in Sonic Adventure DX a year prior for the GC.

*sings words based on the popeye theme song) i'm popeye the sailor man i live in the garbage can i swim with naked pokla dot women i'm popeye the sailor man (TOOT TOOT). (back to words now) i saw someone stream this and the last level has 2 boss battles and if you mess up the 2nd boss battle it's back to the start of the level and fighting the first boss again so it's one of those games... also health and stuff carries over to the next level so expect to lose a bunch of times.

This was a decent Super Mario Land clone, Yet this was released in late 1993 while Japan got it in 1991. Probably due to licensing and publishing rights.
I wouldn't call it a "Super Mario Land Clone". Its quite different from SML's formula.

Also this is a sequel to the first Popeye released only in Japan, this is a similar case to Goonies 2 and Sonic Drift 2 where the first game was left in Japan.
But for some reason The Goonies arrived in the US in the Arcade version on Vs. UniSystem which is an FC/NES but arcade cabinet.

I've played it once and it doesn't look bad for a Platform game in the style of Super Mario Land but it has its own thing and is an improvement worthy of the previous installment that came out on this same console.
