You can get text with the speech if you enable it in the ScummVM settings (Game Options>Audio>Override>Text and speech to Both). I personally apply it universally via Global Options though.

I played this when I was around 10, back at the 90's. It made a impression on me, so I tryed to play it a few times after the 2000 and 2010's, but never managed to go very far. So, in 2023, I decided that was time to face this game again and try hard this time. This game can be very frustrating, and in the end was not rewarding, but I glad I was able to finish it after all this time. If you like me, enjoy detective and adventure games, give it a try, but I suggest playing the first JB Harold game if you're looking something shorter.

Fully voice acted, yes please! Shame about the subs but excited to give his a try.
Screenshots are giving me Gabriel Knight 2 vibes.

"And saying this game's a mess is probably understating things. It's AWFUL, easily one of the worst adventures Sierra ever put out..."
It's definitely one of the worst Sierra games, but I also think there's far worse games (i.e. "Police Quest: SWAT").

Yes, this was the last adventure game in the PQ series, pivoting into tactical sims after this that eventually became the SWAT series. Although the original series creator Jim Walls did release another game called Blue Force with a different company, which was 'his' PQ4 in all but name.

And saying this game's a mess is probably understating things. It's AWFUL, easily one of the worst adventures Sierra ever put out. Not to mention that partnering with Darryl Gates just a year or two after the LA riots was certainly a choice. I can't even recommend it to fans of bad games, because it's not fun-bad, just a dreary mean-spirited slog.

"The CD version is fully voiced (no text though?)..."

Yeah, welcome to CD-ROM re-releases of Sierra games.

But anyway, "PQ: Open Season" was the beginning of the end. The story's a mess and the game fails spectacularly at teaching the player how to execute proper police procedures (unlike its predecessors).
Seems like they started morphing into the SWAT brand from this forward.
