Playstation or Xbox Controller Layout?

Thought I'd ask this one since I just specifically bought an 8BitDo Pro 3 for the Playstation style layout.

What I mean by this is do you generally prefer D-Pad up or D-Pad down? Or does it vary depending on what game you're playing? I'd say I've got used to using an Xbox style layout while playing PC games for the most part, but it still feels off when emulating PS1/PS2 games.

I prefer oldie but goldie PlayStation controller layout. Xbox controllers never been comfortable for me.

Symmetrical layout for 2D games
Asymmetrical layout for 3D games

I lean towards symmetrical since I was raised on PS2.

Depends on the kind of game. If it's 2D I tend to prefer the Playstation layout because the D-Pad is where I want it. Using the D-Pad on Xbox is awkward because it's really designed for secondary functions like switching weapons and such. However, in games where the D-Pad is used for those kinds of secondary functions and only the analog stick moves you, it's handy to have them staggered so the D-Pad is more out of the way.

That's why you have to just own many controllers and switch as needed.

I think the joystick being above feels more natural when playing modern and 3D games because your thumbs shouldn't be always at a neat-90° angle.

It's what I grew up with & I'm too stubborn to change now.

I can deal with the asymmetrical/Xbox layout but my preference is the symmetrical PlayStation layout (Hence why I use an 8bitdo SN30 Pro+ as my current controller)
