I'm not a MTG person. Do these crossover sets do well? I see them all the time, and I have to wonder how it impacts the game and the MTG players/collectors.

I also have to wonder if they are effective in bringing in new players? because I see the Final Fantasy set and want to buy some of those cards, but it doesn't make me want to play or get invested in the actual game.

I know about this only because my brother is an uncontrolled hardcore nerd so he even talk about these shit to me while I'm sleeping by breaking into me home lolol.

For example my brother doesn't like "Japanese shit" (in his term) so this is why he ignores Pokemon and Final Fantasy, he also dislikes Doctor Who (I can't believe he and I share same bloodline) yet he said these crossover shits are "fresh in fun way" to him because this game is a game that you learn tons of cards and learn how they play out, but because of it people get bored of playing with same cards so even me brother appreciates these crossover thingy only in the context of it adds a fresh reason to play game. So as far as I get this game appeal people who like chess like games and like to learn about tons of stuff and use their knowledge for imaginative tactical and strategical gameplay. On the surface it may seem like "ordinary turn based combat" but it's more than that. Me brother disliked JRPGs despite their turn based combat but he thought American RPGs, especially Baldur's Gate 3 is "this is how turn based game is done" shit that what I see is more like trying to plot an airplane lolol.

His only complaint is not comprehending why Final Fantasy cards are so expensive because he is a huge nerd who loves to collect any junk lol. The dude has Middle-earth world map on his wall yo!!! And they call me nerd because for fun I go deep into science for both interesting stuff, MacGyverism, to explain fun stuff and use it as meme but I have Fallout New Vegas poster on me wall!!! lol

Ok. So it seems to have a few problems that I would also apply to Yu-Gi-Oh! then. Everyone playing the same few cards and making the game less fun to play, I mean. It's at least good then that MTG is trying to freshen things up a bit.

Trading cards are an expensive friggin' hobby to begin with. I can totally see why Final Fantasy themed cards would be so expensive :loldog

I don't know enough about magic to say, but I have to guess that this is either a case of crossovers generally bringing in some percentage of new players, or these sets have some exclusive card that's super good or something? All I can tell you is that decks have colors, or did at some point, and black lotus is a thing.

I'm just really over the crossovers thing. I don't need my life to be Ready Player One. Wolverine showing up in a different comic set in the same universe? Sure, fine. At least you can explain that away. Marvel Zombies Jones soda? What the hell flavor is zombie? What are we even doing.

I had my MTG moment when 3rd edition came out, and kept playing for 8-10 years. Now, they are totally out of control, they release anything regardless if it is related to the main story or not.

I understand these cards are fun for people who play videogames, but I don't see a connection between playing videogames and playing MTG. All the people I know who are hardcore MTG players don't care about videogames.

Wait, is there like an overarching story to MTG? I'm used to Yu-Gi-Oh! where each individual archetype usually has its own self-contained lore/story to it.

Yeah, it kind of has a story. There have been a few official documents here and there, and the timeline is real, but I yet to see a compilation of that in a book. That would be amazing :)

Well if you like something more than Yu-Gi-Oh you may try MTG. What I can say is despite my brother always liked card games he never liked Yu-Gi-Oh but for him MTG is like best game ever lol. He bought tons of cards of it and keeps them in special dossiers!!! lolol

I think like 90% of why I like Yu-Gi-Oh! is from growing up with the anime and video games. The actual card game kinda sucks, although I do have some good memories playing it with friends.

Now I want that compilation book too ::fire

Well TBH it's pretty much what my brother would say. The only anime he watched is Yu-Gi-Oh but was very dissappointed with his card game. He had more enjoyment when he played Pokemon card game.
