PS1 PlayStation 1 VCD Player Accessory query.

A bit of a strech finding info about this item but I may has well leave some evidence of it somewhere.
I attempted to repair a non-branded PS1 VCD player attachment I had lying around for a while. Found the fault being the BIOS chip, it was a socketed chip that was loose so all it needed was a good push back in and wham! Fixed.

Hooked it up to the PS1 and It booted to the main screen, displaying EMS on it. That brand yields very little search results sadly.


Okay so VCD films huh, I never even had one in the first place. Thankfully theres loads on the Internet Archive so I grabbed a few. Playback is fine on my PC so I popped it into the PS1 and I only get audio. The EMS screen stays on but the TV only gives me audio. I know the video out on the attachment works fine because PS1 games display correctly so AV passthrough is fine (if it didn't work I would not see that initial splash screen).

I'm using a SCPH-1002, and I get the feeling it may only work on the 5000 or 7000 series units only. Any ideas on what might be causing this? Is there a specific kind of MPEG this thing can only read?
In the meantime i'll buy a few VCD films on ebay to try out, they are only a few bucks anyway.

Edit - Hang on, perhaps the MPEG decoder chip is dead.

I've always had a fascination with the mere existence of VCDs; it's like a format build for bootlegs. Anyway, I have no actual guidance for you. I just wanted to cheer on your efforts. YOU CAN DO IT!!!

I've been using the SuperStation 1 to play VCDs through the CD-i core and it's so ridiculous I love it. Some of those on the Archive might be the ones formatted for the CD-i, but I have little to no knowledge as to whether they're compatible with standard players
