Pixel Trivia!

Correct, nice work!
Here I go thinking I’m being slick for choosing a weird Japan-only game I somehow played when I was 7 ?

Correct ! I haven't even finished it yet like the big loser I am ! (But I did finish the Mega CD version)

Well, my entry is in the previous post edit.

Lords of Thunder. I'd recognize that HUD anywhere and it does help that the game is creme de la creme in its genre and platform

EDIT: Here's hoping this one's obscure enough to actually be a challenge.

Is that Lum in the background? A Urusei Yatsura game then?

I recognize Lum from 'Urusei Yatsura' in the background, but does it have anything to do with the game in the foreground?
There aren't many games based on Urusei Yatsura. I know of one on Mega CD, one on NDS and maybe one on MSX.

Hints will have to wait.

It might be from a Japanese micro computer of some kind. MSX2, PC98, FM Towns... Not guaranteed though. For all I know it could be a DOS or Amiga freeware game.
It looks like a freeware game because of the background image compared to the foreground.

Seeing as it's been a day, give or take a few hours here are some hints:
1. As some of you have theorized Urusei Yatsura has nothing to do with this game. Lum here is just one of several anime stills used as backgrounds. If anything, seeing how many you can recognize is more interesting than the fairly boilerplate puzzle game at hand.
2. It's a freeware DOS game. I'm not entirely sure when it came out, though I would guess mid-90s. I discovered it ages ago when I was browsing my dad's stacks of burned CDs and it's kinda been with me ever since.

Speaking of 2. Is it a rule to only post games you've played before? I've stuck to it along with making screenshots myself because I thought it wouldn't be in the spirit of the challenge to do otherwise, though I can see how asking people to make screenshots themselves could be inconvenient. I mean, you could just google 'most obscure game for system XYZ' and post that I suppose but what's the fun in that?

No such rule as of yet.

But it is preferable that the screenshots are from games you have played before (so you can give better clues) and that they were modified by you.

I think it should be, and I think, once this round is over, you should only be able to post officially-licensed, officially-published games, too – no bootlegs or hacks or anything like that.

Or, if you do, make it so the person has to mention that fact.

Yeah. Agreed.

That simply makes sense.
how would games like Happyland Adventures, Icy Tower or even my entry stack up against this rule? They're all freeware/Public Domain, don't have 'official' publishers other than their creators and barring some stolen assets they're not really bootlegs or hacks.

EDIT: We could stick to commercial games I suppose? Even that might leave a bit to be desired seeing how many little-known indie devs there were out there, even as far back as the 90s but at least we would avoid the 'my neighbor was making this totally cool game in his garage in 1985 but he never finished it and I'm the only guy who ever played it' situation.

Well... I Googled your examples and they are well-known enough, so they can work.

What I want to avoid is people posting games with zero chance of being guessed, like a small Pokemon romhack or something like that.

Ok, so in the interest of not wasting any more of anyone's time here's the big reveal: The game is called Switch. I figured that such an unassuming name+odd anime backgrounds would make for an interesting pick but I guess I didn't know how obscure the game really is. I actually looked it up and it looks like it's available on abandonware sites. Would be hella awkward if it turned out I've been accidentally hoarding lost media. Look at the garish title screen:

Anyway, here's a much more reasonable replacement. It was mildly popular in its day and I've sure seen more people talking about it over the years than Switch (N-word's console notwithstanding)

Mate, I can't even find this game by reverse image-searching the image you attached. I think that means you win this thread, permanently. How on earth did you discover this!?

First off, me on the left, and second off, I don't know this game, but I guarantee it's going to be called something like "Bug in the Machine/Program/System" or something equally suicide-inducing.

Took me a while to get far enough to post a screenshot you probably won't see anywhere else.
