So true! Honestly, if the Neo had wider 3rd party support, it would have completely wrecked the 16-bit race. The Turbo Express was crazy too, though I didn't have one, it was way, way ahead of its time.

Neo-Geo was held back by having Cadillac prices for both systems and games. TurboExpress was a battery eating monster because it was literally a then-current console built into a handheld.

Sega with the built-in modem in the Dreamcast, the PC Engine with the CD and perhaps even the NeoGeo for being impressive (but expensive).

I'll also add the original Xbox for being a powerful, almost PC-like, console for its gen as well as the PS3 with its CELL processor for the next.

Game Gear was mildly hungry compared to the devourer of worlds that was the TurboExpress. We're talking an 8bit system on a low-res LCD vs a 16bit system on a full portable TV screen.

The Sega Game Gear is quite ahead of its time when it comes to handheld gaming. The backlit screen and Master System compatibility through an adapter made a power beast against the OG Gameboy. Downside though it uses 6 AA batteries and only lasts for 3-5 hours.

If you think the Game Gear was ahead of its time then you should take a look at the Atari Lynx. This thing is a monster for a portable console from 1989 and it's basically a pc-engine in terms of specs.
With great power came, well... great "size". The Lynx is as big as the Switch and almost as big as the Steam Deck, it also chews through batteries like it's nothing.
Unfortunately it couldn't compete with the Game Boy and the Game Gear almost immediately replaced it as Nintendo's only portable rival.
There's also the lacking game library, with few interesting games to play; the poor thing suffered the same fate as basically every Atari console aside from the 2600.
A really cool and unique feature of the Lynx is that it has two sets of A and B buttons so you can flip the console if you are left-handed.
