I never really asked him about the origins or how it all started. My guess was that it started as a server for PSO Ver.2 PC - that's what most of the GMs played and it probably was the easiest to reverse engineer. There was Dreamcast support when I joined during the later Gamecube days and I think that came after the PC Ver.2. I have no clue if the original version, Ver.1, of the Dreamcast PSO was supported. But Dreamcast users also faced the obstacle that broadband adapters were getting extremely rare and expensive.
According to Wikipedia, PSO BB was shut down in March 2008 in NA and EU and around that time (November 07 and February 08) Ambitions of the Illuminus was already live. I remember that he liked the loot system in PSU. When making a party you could decide how rare drops were being distributed - Ranom, Order or Normal (the one who picks it up gets it) and he tried and succeeded in implementing it into BB.
You can find the palette AR code here
There are a bunch of other QoL fixes like a code that makes Megid a damage dealing tech. "Foie always penetrates" is clearly broken in the early game when resistances are low. Low level Foie travels reaaaaaaally slowly and ends up hitting a target like 4 or 5 times. Probably less of an issue with higher level Foie and on higher difficulties. There's also a few download quest packs.
I remember Broomop, I knew about him before but then met him through Schthack. He was an alright guy and he sometimes popped on Schtserv to test something (non nasty). When people spotted him, they'd usually log in with a fat HUmar in the orange outfit called Broomop and swarm around him. I also remember Fingaz, Nugs, Myriad, Puppykicker, Optimus Prime and Bones. Most of them were alright people if you could get past them being little troublemakers.
