Sweet! I love the original Phantasy Star. The PS2 version is a nice take on the original game. i think my favorite version so far has been the Sega Ages version on Switch.
The only problem with the Switch Ages version to me is that it doesn't offer a retranslated script as an option.

true that but the overall quality of life changes make a big difference like the dungeon map and having character stats on the main screen definitely help the game. Plus having the FM audio option drastically changes the music in game.

I agree, though I personally dislike FM.

The patch for the Sega Master System one by SMSPower people also has the option for FM (although I liked PSG more), sound test, font options, meseta and exp multiplier options, walk and text speed.

Really nice patches!

Seems a good version too! Specially with the map for first person dungeons!

wonderful! I played through this last year and felt that some of the translation was a little dry and disconnected. Looking forward to playing through again with your translation.

If you like the idea of PS1 with automap, check out the Sega Ages switch port. It's a really well-done port IMO, directed by PSI's main artist (later PSIV's director) Rieko Kodama herself (RIP). The FM Towns audio is replicated pretty decently and the "Ages" mode gives you 2x EXP and money if you like. Neat Monster Viewer, too.

Fun fact: Sega apparently had to re-draw some of the monster sprites (I believe the Mad Doctor?) for the Sega Ages version's Monster Viewer because they could not figure out where all the sprite data was stored or how to decompress it! The way Yuji Hori fit all those monsters and their animations on a 4mb cart was truly black magic.

Anyway, thank you RageBurner for uploading and drawing attention to this release. The Phantasy Star community is really something. I'm currently replaying the Sega Ages PSI on my Switch, so this update to the PS2* version is timely. I actually never finished the PS2 version since, like someone else mentioned, the translation wasn't great and there was something a bit blah about it (probably due to the low budget lol). Still, maybe it's time to finally plow through it. I wouldn't want all that work to go to waste and I'm sure there's a lot of neat new story/lore bits in there.

*It really gets confusing using abbreviations for Phantasy Star games on PlayStations, haha

I wanted to play through the PS1 Phantasy star, but it has this weird thing where you have to talk with certain NPCs in a certain order to progress the story sometimes. Like you can go to where you are suppose to go, but if you don't talk to certain townspeople a certain amount of times in a certain order, the plot won't progress. It was odd.

There is a very comprehensive strategy guide online that I used from time to time for both generations 1 and 2.
