I love this image because it shows so many things at once:

1. The evolution of graphics in the Mario Kart series
2. How well Nintendo has been able to refine the character designs in the transition from 2D to 3D
3. How great of a job the original Nintendo artists were at being able to capture the characteristics of these racers with a small amount of pixels
4. Nintendo recognizing the fans love for the series since its inception by paying homage to the original not only here, but also in the music and courses

Did anyone else feel similar when they saw this part during the direct?

is Donkey Kong from DKC the same character as Donkey Kong Jr.? There's no clear answer to that.

I wish SEGA could do it too. This is not hard to do, but unlike how Nintendo want to preserve the past, SEGA want to ignore the past and instead change X to cause a change in the future like change is necessarily good/improvement. This make them come up with BS designs that make fans of many games furious enough to ignore SEGA or the games they ruined lol.

The DK/DK Jr lineage is something I hope Nintendo clears at some point this generation. The head cannon I subscribe to is that DK Jr. is the current Donkey Kong all grown up. But I've also read that Donkey Kong Jr. could be the current DK's absent father, but thats just sad and then also begs the question, where is mama Kong??

When I first saw this I was gobsmacked. I still can't really believe it. Who the fuck thought this looked good? I swear Mr. Yakuza just makes it all up himself with no one around to approve or critique the ideas. Because this is so dumb. They want him to appear older and somewhat ditached from the older games, but instead of making him even the slightest bit older, they gave him a K-pop bleached bowl that doesn't even fit his head and called it a day. I hate the RPG games, and after seeing and hearing some things about 8. Yeah I'm out. I'm strictly 0-6.

I'm sorry but why that Sonic screenshot? They're fixed it upon release.

Also Sega is not ignoring the past considering how they're pushing Classic Sonic's design and gameplay since Generations and Mania.

I cannot speak for Yakuza but Kiryu becoming old is also a progression of the character so you cannot stay forever in the same era.

Also SoR 4 is legit a great game, why are you saying it's an issue? I mean sure, I still prefer SoR 2 and 1 over it but you also cannot just milk the same antagonist and designs all the time in every medium.

I've always seen DKC as a soft reboot.

Also Cranky in DKC Returns (and Tropical Freeze) is implied to be the DK from the SNES DKC unless it's just for the easter egg.
