Overrated "Classics"

I like pretty much every game mentioned here and I'm feeling very butthurt about all of your opinions. Damn it!

I'm starting to think maybe some people really don't know how to enjoy some of the games discussed 💩

That's what makes this thread and it's derivatives amusing. You can tell someone played a fraction of it, or didn't understand the mechanics by the way they complain about it.

Devil May Cry: Ugh, it hurts my soul because atmosphere and visual-wise. Easily my favourite in the franchise. I should love this game. But it goes from passable to savage buffoonery real quick. Yeah I know it was 2001, it was the first of it's kind, it wasn't intended to be what it was at first. Listen, I don't care why it's awful, if it's awful, I'm hating on it. The sequel is a famous disaster, and yeah I agree. But honestly I'd prefer 2 over 1. I'd rather a game be too easy than too hard. Especially with the ways DMC1 makes itself so fuckin' hard.
Did you play the western PS2 release or the HD Collection remaster? The latter is generally easier if difficulty is what turned you off from the game. But as a consequence, some graphical effects such a transparencies are kinda borked. I read that the HD collection is based on the Japanese PS2 release, so that might be worth considering as well.

I kinda wanna make a thread about why I feel Ocarina of times push as the greatest game ever feels forced and undermines the innovations of games that came out prior but I'm worried another negative "overrated" thread might piss people off so maybe I should just do it here?

Do it anyway, Seer also made a great video on why Ocarina of Time is not all that great.

Careful though, this game's as defended as Final Fantasy VII, and as I'm coming to find, Earthbound. Maybe more defended.

Another one that gets defended a lot is Fallout New Vegas. I love the fuck oit of that game, but Fallout 3 doesn't get mearly as much love and praise as New Vegas gets, despite being a pioneer into trying something new, and having amazing character interaction and sidestory content.

Gotta link to the Seer video? I'm not as worried about people getting mad at me for daring to disrespect Ocarina of time as I am people being mad at me for making another negative overrated thread.

Also Earthbound is literally one of my all time favorite games and was a huge part of my childhood. I just know its far from perfect and is by design not for everyone.

Also found the seer video lol. Shouldve tried looking before asking lol.

Thank you so much for not making one ::nervous-prinny

Sorry for raggin' on it.
It really did impact my childhood in a huge way; hearing all the stories about it, wanting to play it for so long, trying to find it everywhere to no avail and hoping for it on my birthday and Christmas but even my parents couldn't find it.

I gotta say, the biggest thing that game did to my childhood was make me want it. The yearning was enough of a positive experience to remember the game by, for me. ::cirnoshrug

Because it's cute, fun, has a catchy theme that's happy and cute, and the gameplay is fun and easy without being 'do-nothing and win' level of easy. It's a game that infants can play, as well as non-gamer adults, and everyone has a good time. Well okay, maybe not everyone ::cirnoshrug

Bubble Bobble the arcade game version is hard. At least if you play solo.

Aside from writing, I've never understood why that is. NV has the more robust companion system and all the faction stuff so that's neat and all, but it loses the isolating feeling that 3 has, and 3 definitely has the more interesting weirdos you meet out in the world.

A lot of popular Ps2 era shooters, both first and third person. Don’t get me wrong, there are some absolute classics like Halo 1 and 2, but most are cookie-cutter rip offs of each other. I’ve played the likes of Medal of Honor, the early Call of Duties, Brothers in Arms, Killzone 1, SOCOM, etc. They’re all average to bad and do little to reinvent the same boring formula. I mean, games like SOCOM do try to spice it up with squad based gameplay or Battlefield’s destructible environments, but at their core it’s all the same. Gets old wicked fast. Just the consequences of the military shooter fad honestly, oversaturation of the market.
(And some suffer from obnoxious control schemes too; Metroid Prime on GameCube and SOCOM have really weird control schemes that don’t feel comfortable at times
I agree .
There some good shooters buried somewhere in the HUGE ps2 library but i cant say that most shooters were that great overall because its either of its bad performance that plagued the games from the start or the games were even way too linear and were bland overall to play . With bad luck , both points hit at the same time .

I would argue Halo was one of the bad ones tbh. Mainly because of the below average level design which paled in comparison to what a lot of 90s fps games already had.
While i like Halo 1-3 for its ideas and setting overall and it brought huge places as a playground on itsself , i have to agree with your point .

90s shooters like Duke Nukem 3D , Blood , Shadow Warrior , Quake 1&2 had open levels that are on itsself approachable from different ways and had a level design that you can strategically use like Bottle-necking , medikit-saving , rocket-jumping , trap-baiting , enemy infighting and so on not because the developer intended to be used like this or is forced to be used but because the mechanics are there to be used efficiently combined with the level design . Secrets had another incentive to explore those levels for more ammo , health , power ups and goodies . The exploits were just the cherry on the cake and improved the game sometimes immensly .

Halo goes for huge battles but it is slower , way too methodical in its combat and most strategies doesnt really work well because either the level wont provide it or the mechanics arent meant to have that.
The bullet-sponginess even worsen the gameplay except you take the weaknesses from certain weapons for specific enemies and approaches where you should shoot .

The whole trend to have many games being like Halo in the 2000s really underlines my comment that i mentioned from ComicallyLargeSpider . Halo is still great fun but one approach how shooters can be designed instead being seen as an "Evolution" of the shooter-genre how many game-journalists and gullible trend-idiots abused the point without any mercy .
