TV Series One episode of Devil May Cry was all I needed...

I looked him up, and apparently he's one of the people who contributed to the idea that Apu from The Simpsons is a racist character.
Well Apu is somewhat of a character whose accent is played off for comedic purposes helping castigate immigrants to America.
I am not saying removing Apu was the right idea but there is no denying the purpose of the character in classic Simpsons. Futurama seems to celebrate Hermes Jamaican ancestry albeit through a lot of stereotypes. Its hard to explain and people much more intelligent than myself have struggled to do so. Apu just has a lot of negativity within the character design.

As someone who is a casual fan of DMC3 and considers it among my favorite games... I liked the adaptation but then again I liked Castlevania. Is it the best anime ever... Hell no but its watchable and fun.
They changed stuff but it would be boring if they did a 1:1 adaptation because that universe already exists in the games.

Firstly, Apu is NOT a negative stereotype (He was actually one of the most helpful characters on The Simpsons), and secondly, WE KNOW. We KNOW that adaptations will take deviances from the source material. In fact, barring the 1995 Mortal Kombat film, the best video game to screen adaptations do take liberties whilst retaining the key characteristics, iconography and spirit of the original work (I.E. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider or the Sonic the Hedgehog movies, the third of which even goes as far as to play the final boss theme from Sonic Adventure 2, vocals and all).

Netflix May Cry on the other hand makes changes it shouldn't have because, again, the show has it out for the source material because the showrunner is a poser who despises how silly it is. It doesn't make changes to fit with the new format, it ditches the source material barring stuff it can use for fanservice because it doesn't want to be Devil May Cry. It wants to be a serious "prestige" show a la Daredevil: Born Again, Invincible, or The Boys, and that's why it changes so much to the point of unrecognisability.

Everyone mentions how bad lady is, but I can't even call her that, she's ladies weird cousin Woman or something. it's just 100% a completely different character, it she had a different haircut and lacked heterochromia I wouldn't have even assume it was her.
Now, I'm curious. Can I have the specific details on how badly Shankar and co. derailed Lady's character?

First and foremost, she works with the weird demon hunter thing the US government. Her personal vendetta against her dad and demons in general, is highjacked by them to train her into a solider. You know how she really hates demons at the beginning of 3 and is grossed out by Dante? it feels like that's the only scene the writers saw. She is mean spirited, fucks up the plot by refusing to trust others, and swears like a teenager who just discovered it.

There is a point that Dante could have ended the plot by killing the main Villian, but because lady put a Suicide squad bomb in his neck because she didn't trust him, he got knocked out by having half his head blown off. Even towards the end, she doesn't trust Dante and tries to betray him to steal his necklace for the government.

She eventually has a moment where she meets some demons who are "refugees" and learns how to empathize with them... but like... the reason the Villian exists in the first place is because in an almost identical situation, Lady and a bunch of other soldiers just opened fire on them because they were being chased by a dragon.

also, Dante calling her lady is 100% demeaning in this, he just didn't care to learn her name despite characters saying it in front of her.

I'm not even going to touch on the changes to her backstory or the fact her "go to" weapon is magnetic guns that come back to her if she drops them? it's weird, but very secondary to the fact she's just an unlikable piece of shit.

As a longtime DMC fan this is all...really sad to hear. I wasn't expecting anything great, but hearing it's worse than a flop ruined my day. Netflix has lost all the confidence that the Castlevania adaptation won from me. Thanks to everyone here who posted their experience and saved me the physical pain of trying to watch it. Now if you'll excuse me, I'll go nurse my heartache...

I think to be honest... a lot of the same issues in this were in castlvania... but some of them just worked better for castlvania, or weren't as bad as they were here... The biggest example being the need for everything to be explained scientifically, like I said earlier. they were a lot better than this to be sure though, even if I really didn't like how richter was portrayed.

I thought that Hellsing was a great anime DMC.

On the other hand I'm fed up by "western made animes" we got for video games like CV and DMC.

I'd rather watch OVAs from the 80's-90's

Apu is still somehow one of the most positive Simpsons character out there (being a good father and a hard worker). Sure, his accent is a bit exaggerated and his family name having many syllables is made in a parodic way but if Apu is a problematic character then Pedro Chespirito (Bumblebee man) should also be considered as being problematic and getting removed.

The Simpsons as a series is a satire and commentary of America and its culture.

I disagree with that sentence.

Of course it cannot be 100% 1:1 but you cannot ruin the spirit of the source material...

Shame, it seems DMC is pretty much destined to always be a troubled franchise.

So basically, they pulled a Faye Valentine and turned what was a kind, yet badass and strong-willed girl into an annoying, morally bankrupt and vulgar in-your-face girlboss.

WHY AM I NOT SURPRISED?!

When I heard Limp Bizkit was in the trailer I thought it was probably going to end up as something I wouldn't like, so I stayed away from it. Glad I didn't invest any time into it, my pal said he hated it.

I wouldnt say "troubled" .
More a deliquent franchise that is more nuanced behind the great gameplay , cool characters and its mainpoint of "Half-demons safe human-world because its their home " .

The show was extremly hamfisted and didnt understand what Devil May Crys story and characters were .

And we shouldnt forget that Devil May Cry is a franchise that only works the best when the gameplay is there too to underline Dantes , Neros and Vergils coolness , personality and capabilities perfectly in its story and context.

The Anime was great but has its negatives too .

The Netflix show misses totally the point and didnt end up well overall .

But atleast we know now how it actually is .

Cant blame the people for enjoying it . At least its for them a nice time-killer .

Well, I'd like to update that the show DOES in fact change continuity from scene to scene. After watching an in-depth review of the show's first episode, I realised that I forgot a scene of Temu BPRD watching White Rabbit requesting to the thieves from the prologue to "bring him the hunter"... which didn't happen in said opening scene.

It's official: Adi Shankar is the second coming of Paul W.S. Anderson. It's bad enough that he shares the theme of treating the games like shit, but he also shares the habit of destroying continuity? I mean for the love of Sparda, this show really is the second coming of Resident Alice, only somehow without any of the redeeming qualities or the good beginning that Resident Alice had!

Huh... was it that bad? I didn't mind it when I watched the whole 1st season to the end.

It was pretty much just a fan's retelling of DMC to me, with all its easter eggs here and there for those who know the source material before they watched the show. Probably my only gripe with it was that it felt like Dante was more of a backseater during most of the show, as it focused on shining the spotlight on the other characters instead.

It was definitely not something I took very seriously, and even had low expectations on it before its arrival. If S2 does get produced, I'll probably still check it out.

Again, I have no problem if you're okay with this. Most of us aren't, but it's fine if you are.
