I adore the ridiculous, vigilante-action thriller, "赤裸羔羊" (or better known as Naked Killer) released in 1992.
It's a gorgeously shot, fast paced, snapshot of one of the highest points of the thriving Chinese film market.

Set in the bustling metropolis of Hong Kong in the late 80's, the movie follows a traumatized detective Tinam (played by Simon Yau) and the hot-tempered Kitty (played by Chingmy Yau) as they fatefully cross paths, leading to an explosive movie with many twists and turns.

It would be absolutely remiss of me not to mention the fairly heavy sexual framings, as the film is geared directly towards the demographic of adults. It genuinely has a lot to say about many social topics and their interworkings, especially the grays within romantic relationships.

It's a tough choice, because I want to say things like Oldboy, Nobody Knows, Treeless Mountain, but I think the one I'll go with is Lilja 4-Ever

The subject matter is a bit rough to praise, as it deals with a girl being abandoned and ending up involved in sex trafficking in another country. It's based on a true story and is well done. The main character and her best friend are really good, but I can't say much more without spoiling it.

Actually, I'm gonna cheat and do two because Lilja 4-ever is one for a when you're already having a bad day. So how about Crows Zero, which serves as a prequel to the Crows manga

There are actually several of these but I'm only super familiar with the first one. It's standard Japanese high school delinquent fare, with cool looking guys fighting to be the king of the hill. Some manga characters appear here too, so that's cool to see.

You may wanna remove the first pic because it kinda breaks rule 6. I mean it's not my problem or decision but I wouldn't wanna see this interesting thread go!!!! ::sadkirby

Well I don't watch movies much because it ain't my thing, so I like a few movies and even fewer movies I like are non-English so it's easy to pick my favorite!!!:

The name of the movie means "The Journey" and it's literally and metaphorically a journey. It has darkness, comedy, love, death, realistic reflection of real life and supernatural events. IMO I guess the movie has everything that matters to me. I would say it's a psychological movie that leans more into philosophical and "rule 3" topic according to the rules of this website lol. Its sense of humor therefore lean more into criticising society.

Story may be generic but the point is not really the story anyway, at least there is a "deep" meanings in the movie here and there. In the end I like it for its sense of humor and the adventure sense of how a journey should be!!!

I think my favorite one is "Hunde! Wollt Ihr Ewig Leben!" -- An Austrian WW2 film played by actual veterans and with a lot of actual equipment, based on the memories of Captain Fritz Woss, who served on the Eastern Front.

It's very well acted, written and executed. Gorgeous, seamless use of file footage, too.

Thanks for the heads up, i've changed it to a less risque title!

Most of my favorite films are non english:

Eureka (2000)
Woman in the Dunes (1964)
Stalker (1979)
The Human Condition III (1961)
Harakiri (1962)
8½ (1963)

Directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, it follows Kenichi Takabe, a detective investigating a string of recent violent and seemingly random killings where the perpetrators all carved an X shape into their victims and have no recollection of why they committed these acts, with the only clue the detectives have to go on is that each individual met a mysterious young man before they did what they did.

An incredibly directed film, I'd highly recommend to anyone who's a fan of horror, specifically more of the psychological horror sub-genre, or anyone who's a fan of Japanese films in general. It's one of those films that really sticks into your mind and gives you a lot to think about. Every time I watch it I notice something new, it's why I've made it a bit of habit to watch this at least once a year.

My favorite non-English movie is easily Parasite, even before it won the Oscar. I won't say anything about it. Maybe check the genre and age rating if you must, but I'd recommend going in blind and just watching it (if you haven't).

Probably the best film I saw on cinema and overall was the Passion of Joan of Arc. B/w, silent film, yet it was perfect.

I remember watching it on cinema back then. One of the best and most emotional movies I saw.

Sometimes people "force me" to watch a movie and this was one of them and rarely it was a movie that I was made watch because "it's good" turned out to be actually good lol.

The movie really started with a generic idea so it made me said "dude it's like the most popular movies released like 50 years ago".

Then halfway there things got fun lol.

And around the ending things got "deep in psychological depth" so it was interesting to watch. Yet IDK if it would be an enjoyable movie for most people.

The thing about Korean fiction is all about making ordinary life filled with dramatic BS so drama-wise I watched better Korean TV series about it decades ago so this movie felt flat but gotta appreciate them for taking a very ancient story device and trying to make it deep within the context of psychology which is what really good about the movie and also why some people would dislike the movie thinking how "empty" and "pointless" the movie is.

Sengoku Jieitai. A JSDF unit travels back in time where they join forces with a feudal lord. The film has several English titles, the most well-known being G.I. Samurai.

The Host (2006)

Before winning the Oscar for Parasite, Bong Joon-ho directed one of the best kaiju films, a mix of comedy and adventure.

The Raid (2011)

The_Raid_2011_poster.jpg

One of the best action films of the century so far. Low-budget but skillfully made.
