No Grey, Er Silver Hair Yet- But Definitely Feeling Kinda Old

Some recent articles done by some writers here most notably the works of the “Breakfast King” makes me ponder.

About what? You asked, well about many things really but none like so than how time flew.

A few days ago we got hit by a typhoon, it’s not a strong one but it knocked out our internet. Bored out of my wits I look at my stash of a few anime DVDs to find something to watch and there it is even though it’s busted beyond repair I kept for probably for sentimental reasons.

The first phone I bought with my hard earned cash.
Though it’s busted about more than ten years ago there’s a part of me that just can’t say goodbye to this thing. I did took to a few repair shops back then but all I got was that they no longer have the parts and they’ve now focus on smartphones.

I know it’s a bit of cliché and probably cringe but this the part where I go full flashback.

The year was 2005 more than a year after I finished college. Not a bachelor’s degree just a two year technical course but it got me a diploma nonetheless.

My master plan was to earn some cash and then go back and get that degree, spoiler alert guys it didn’t happened. Even the best laid plans are doomed to fail that’s what my Grandpa used to say. Some external factors hampered those plans and I won’t tell you guys about it for this is RGT not a therapist session with a shrink, so yeah no trauma dumping here.

Moving on to the subject which is my online adventures with that phone. That phone basically does what a smartphone can do I can send and receive e-mails, surf the net and download some music and games.

Which gave me my first taste of online……..

My first bite at piracy isn’t even intentional just a case of pure coincidence and curiosity on my part.
Back then there’s no PlayStore or AppStore mobile games were curated on a mobile/wap site owned by the telecom provider. If I recall correctly a download cost about $1 or so per game.
I was checking out some reviews online for those mobile games because I don’t wanna risk the chance of paying up for a bad game but then Google slip me something that says “free download”.

What did I do? The thing that most noob like me would do, that is clicking on the link.

They say one thing leads to another and probably that’s where I started downloading contents in an illicit manner.

Looking that phone became my pocket multimedia partner I was watching some news clips and even YouTube back then it even became my first MP3 player provided of course that installed an app that allows it to read and play MP3 files of course.

Though I’m not such a huge mobile gamer I remember only downloading a handful games and some of them a mobile iteration or ports of some current games back then.

Imagine playing this XBOX exclusive on a mobile scale back in 2007 is really quite the experience.

Come to think of I only played with my phone during my bus ride home and during breaks at work for when I get home there’s that SEGA MegaDrive my parents got for me and my little sister as a reward for doing great back at middle school and that PS1 handed down to me by a cousin who just a bought PS2 a couple years back and since it’s backwards compatible he decided to give it to me than rather let just sit there collecting dust.

Like I said earlier these some of these games are iteration of current games that time.

Imagine playing this mobile game version on the bus while coincidentally there’s someone that’s playing the same game on a GBA just a seat apart from you.
That kinda happened to me one time. Oh yeah if you’re curious about the controls it like this; jumps are designated at the buttons 1(jump left), 2(jump upward) and 3(jump right). Movements left and right were designated at buttons 4 and 6 basic attack is done by pressing the 5 button while the bullet soul is at # button.

But then there’s this game series that constantly reminds of how most games regressed into.

The Asphalt series could’ve been a worthy Burnout successor during its early entries but now it’s nothing more than a p2w(pay to win) online game.

Looking at my online mobile adventures decades ago doesn’t just bring nostalgia but kinda reminds me that I’m not getting any younger.

The feeling of trying on this newfound freedom kinda overwhelmed me at first but not to the point that I can’t let it part my side. Imagine all those things at your fingertips but still I have to practice restraint because I maybe downloading “free” content but data connection is pricey even at that time.

They say that age is nothing but a number and you are as old as you feel. Aside from the fact that I now physically feel the results of my reckless young self I still feel good as the day I bought that phone. Not to brag but I can physically do most physically demanding things that I used to do back then. Even though midlife is just around the corner and probably one day it’ll be knocking on my door, I still don’t feel any burnout or slowdown on my part.

They’re probably right, saying that it’s all in the mindset. Things may not turned out the way I wanted back then but still I got all that I need with a lot of extras.

Life’s been good to me I suppose. Being content of what I have even though what I have isn’t that grand.

Oh yeah, if given a chance to go through and fulfill my master plan I’d say pass I dunno it seems that I don’t really care about those what if scenarios anymore. Might be I’m too old or just content of what it is I have right now though it my sound like I’m a big fool. A fool who thinks that sometimes there’s no wealth greater than a peaceful mind and a simple life.

Once again thank you for spending time on this cringe rant of mine

This is Stingy Perry-signing off!

Oh boy, what memories!

Those moments in restaurants or in the car when you had nothing to do—cell phones that broadcast TV weren't around yet, or at least weren't very common—you'd ask your mother to play "Java games" on her Nokia 6610, being careful, as always, not to connect to the internet or you'd lose your underwear as well as your home and your soul.

I've played dozens of them and still have them saved on DVD, but my all-time favorites are:

- Donald Duck: Chaos on the Road
- Shrek the Third
- Spider-Man 3
- King Kong
- Silent Hill
- Pyramid Bloxx
- Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

They may not scale up to the games we got on consoles but they’re undeniably great! I really love the ones that was published by Hands On, Gameloft and Glu.
Very cool! Thanks for writing this.
I’ve been saying this a lot lately but I won’t get tired saying it, thank you very much for reading my article and I’m really glad that you liked it.❤️

They were nothing more than great games to pass the time—never mind how much they cost!—or as I call them, "toilet games," like Tetris or Helix... or Call of Duty: Warzone, cough cough.
