No Grey, Er Silver Hair Yet- But Definitely Feeling Kinda Old

Some recent articles done by some writers here most notably the works of the “Breakfast King” makes me ponder.

About what? You asked, well about many things really but none like so than how time flew.

A few days ago we got hit by a typhoon, it’s not a strong one but it knocked out our internet. Bored out of my wits I look at my stash of a few anime DVDs to find something to watch and there it is even though it’s busted beyond repair I kept for probably for sentimental reasons.

The first phone I bought with my hard earned cash.
Though it’s busted about more than ten years ago there’s a part of me that just can’t say goodbye to this thing. I did took to a few repair shops back then but all I got was that they no longer have the parts and they’ve now focus on smartphones.

I know it’s a bit of cliché and probably cringe but this the part where I go full flashback.

The year was 2005 more than a year after I finished college. Not a bachelor’s degree just a two year technical course but it got me a diploma nonetheless.

My master plan was to earn some cash and then go back and get that degree, spoiler alert guys it didn’t happened. Even the best laid plans are doomed to fail that’s what my Grandpa used to say. Some external factors hampered those plans and I won’t tell you guys about it for this is RGT not a therapist session with a shrink, so yeah no trauma dumping here.

Moving on to the subject which is my online adventures with that phone. That phone basically does what a smartphone can do I can send and receive e-mails, surf the net and download some music and games.

Which gave me my first taste of online……..

My first bite at piracy isn’t even intentional just a case of pure coincidence and curiosity on my part.
Back then there’s no PlayStore or AppStore mobile games were curated on a mobile/wap site owned by the telecom provider. If I recall correctly a download cost about $1 or so per game.
I was checking out some reviews online for those mobile games because I don’t wanna risk the chance of paying up for a bad game but then Google slip me something that says “free download”.

What did I do? The thing that most noob like me would do, that is clicking on the link.

They say one thing leads to another and probably that’s where I started downloading contents in an illicit manner.

Looking that phone became my pocket multimedia partner I was watching some news clips and even YouTube back then it even became my first MP3 player provided of course that installed an app that allows it to read and play MP3 files of course.

Though I’m not such a huge mobile gamer I remember only downloading a handful games and some of them a mobile iteration or ports of some current games back then.

Imagine playing this XBOX exclusive on a mobile scale back in 2007 is really quite the experience.

Come to think of I only played with my phone during my bus ride home and during breaks at work for when I get home there’s that SEGA MegaDrive my parents got for me and my little sister as a reward for doing great back at middle school and that PS1 handed down to me by a cousin who just a bought PS2 a couple years back and since it’s backwards compatible he decided to give it to me than rather let just sit there collecting dust.

Like I said earlier these some of these games are iteration of current games that time.

Imagine playing this mobile game version on the bus while coincidentally there’s someone that’s playing the same game on a GBA just a seat apart from you.
That kinda happened to me one time. Oh yeah if you’re curious about the controls it like this; jumps are designated at the buttons 1(jump left), 2(jump upward) and 3(jump right). Movements left and right were designated at buttons 4 and 6 basic attack is done by pressing the 5 button while the bullet soul is at # button.

But then there’s this game series that constantly reminds of how most games regressed into.

The Asphalt series could’ve been a worthy Burnout successor during its early entries but now it’s nothing more than a p2w(pay to win) online game.

Looking at my online mobile adventures decades ago doesn’t just bring nostalgia but kinda reminds me that I’m not getting any younger.

The feeling of trying on this newfound freedom kinda overwhelmed me at first but not to the point that I can’t let it part my side. Imagine all those things at your fingertips but still I have to practice restraint because I maybe downloading “free” content but data connection is pricey even at that time.

They say that age is nothing but a number and you are as old as you feel. Aside from the fact that I now physically feel the results of my reckless young self I still feel good as the day I bought that phone. Not to brag but I can physically do most physically demanding things that I used to do back then. Even though midlife is just around the corner and probably one day it’ll be knocking on my door, I still don’t feel any burnout or slowdown on my part.

They’re probably right, saying that it’s all in the mindset. Things may not turned out the way I wanted back then but still I got all that I need with a lot of extras.

Life’s been good to me I suppose. Being content of what I have even though what I have isn’t that grand.

Oh yeah, if given a chance to go through and fulfill my master plan I’d say pass I dunno it seems that I don’t really care about those what if scenarios anymore. Might be I’m too old or just content of what it is I have right now though it my sound like I’m a big fool. A fool who thinks that sometimes there’s no wealth greater than a peaceful mind and a simple life.

Once again thank you for spending time on this cringe rant of mine

This is Stingy Perry-signing off!

B-R-A-V-O! Well done!

I loved this one to pieces... And you had me the second you brought up your first phone -- I, too, remember all-too-well the sheer disappoinment of finding out stores just wouldn't service my brave Alcatel 331A because it was "a thing of the past" now.

Oh, and I ABSOLUTELY got ripped off left and right by those WAP stores. My God XD

Keep it up, bro! This was a pleasure to read.

This is huge bro! Especially coming from you I’m really glad you liked. Again thank you very much!

God, I wish I still had my old BlackBerry hanging around just for the memories.
Amazing article! I remember playing a TON of the Sims games and whatever else I could find, from beat 'em ups to DJ music programs. Now my current phone is a CAT flip S22, and I installed a Java emulator just for playing DOOM RPG again. ::omgdoom

Even tho I don’t understand most of the things mentioned in this article it’s very nice stingy ;)
It was way before your time and browsing the internet through mobile device is at infancy back then and probably some of the things I mentioned is kinda like a relic of the past only few remembered or tried to forgot and just moved on.
The worst thing of all Wi-Fi isn’t a thing back then. Imagine waiting for at least 30 minutes to download a file with a couple of MB in size, those days were kinda rough.
And those wap sites I mentioned is like the equivalent of PlayStore, AppStore or even Steam.
Thank you very much reading it really means a lot to me.❤️

I know this device, it was the best phone I've ever had, Nokia still made good devices back then, oh that brings back good memories, I had the device until unfortunately it stopped working, probably due to old age, yes they really were good mobile phones.

Remember how tough those Nokia phones are heck mine really met some “accidents” back then but it still working. I lost count how many times I “accidentally” dropped mine but it’s functional like nothing happened.

I must admit that the decade of mobile games of the 2000s, despite the technical limitations of the phones of the time, had its own thing and the purpose was to entertain and amuse, and also that the Nokia phones of the time were the peak of the company at that time, although I had a Nokia but it was a fold-out one, but I don't remember the exact model, but well, your article is quite good.

30 MINUTES FOR A COUPLE MEGA BYTES?!! Man that sounds rough

Reading this makes me extremely nostalgic. Good post, btw
I’m glad you liked it thank you very much for reading.❤️

Man, this brings me back. I remember being shocked in the mid 2000s with all the mobile versions of establish IPs. Definately not the best games ever made, but it was nice to see the creativity to translate these huge games into mobile at the time. Great read.
Yeah those were the good times, heck even Call of Duty was a third person shooter back then.

I still have all my old nokias, even a couple that are held together by some tape and the power of not being able to let go of the past. They have way too many memories bound to them for me to just throw them away.
There’s really something’s that we really can’t just throw away for it had sentimental values and precious memories that came with it.
30 MINUTES FOR A COUPLE MEGA BYTES?!! Man that sounds rough
Luckily the most largest file I ever downloaded back then was 5MB and most mobile games back then were just under a MegaByte

Well, your mission isn't over yet, bro, x'd/. You must to find a nihonese cellphone to play Doja games (DoJa is a nihonese version of J2ME but exclusive for nihonese cellphones), like the Dothack saga game versions, haha! xd/ If you love Dothack saga, obviously, :v. Btw, do you know a good repository to download J2ME games but cured and without viruses or malwares? :'d?? I have tried to make a full collection for a Nokia Asha 303 downloading games from Java-ware.net, Phoneky.com, Dertz.ini and Archive.org but, more soon than later, my antivirus detects various malwares and trojans in many downloads, x¡D. Indeed, actually Windows Defender is in knock-out state because of that, :'v.

I have a J2ME emulator on my Android phone I’m still using Phoneky.com and Waptrick. Some of the ones I used to go to for downloads are no longer online like Senwap and Dedomil.

I have this friend who happened to be my neighbor who’s kinda like an enthusiast with kind of games what he did is download the games on his external hard drive so he can sanitize them first before he loads it up on his phone.
I know that there’s some other people on the forum who’s emulating those Java and Symbian games you can post a thread regarding the subject and they may have some great insight on the matter.

Quick question stingy did the phone look something like these?View attachment 94994
Yes they are they were dominant during the early to mid 2000s up to 2013 if I’m not mistaken. Those are high end ones you got there! Do they still work?

Just like with Waffles articles, I can relate with what you write, and feel the warm of nostalgia. Also it's easily readable and enjoyable. ::yay

The first new phone I had was exactly as yours! ::surprised-pikachu
I still have it with its box, and some of the others too.
I played several of the same games as you and Waffles, at first from the providers and then acquired from the net.
I remember Castlevania, Asphalt, Miami Nights and the others from that series, King Kong, pinball from King Kong, pinball of Big Race USA, Turok, Spyro, Sam Fisher, etc.
