That may be because we are from the West, where the anime made the foothold the games and Manga series WISHED they had -- I didn't know who Red was as a kid.

Makes sense. Sometimes I wish I was born in japan at the time just to know what was like to play Link Cable battles with random people.

no, you're not. fire emblem three houses is the last normal installment of the series.
dimitri is one of the central characters of the story. his section of the game plays the most like a normal fire emblem game. don't know much more about him since i didn't pick his house in the game.
i would argue that pretty much any other character in the series before three houses came out is more iconic than those in that game.

It’s heavily debated, but I think the love Nintendo shows to the cast it chooses to keep around helps their standing. The company may be awful and evil with business, but its development arms are filled with people who truly love these characters and worlds. They want to see them thrive. Nintendo is full of “franchise champions”… and not every company is as lucky. In fact, most today are not so.

The relevance and love this familiar cast has is something to be proud of!

To be honest he has still done more than many other trainers.

Even the Team Rocket despite how many times they failed to retrieve Pikachu they still are going at it so perseverance is one of their strongest quality.
