Ninku is the inspiration of Naruto moreso than DragonBall. Kishimoto drew Naruto because he wanted more Ninku! And a lot of the decisions for the Naruto anime were made because Kishimoto asked for the staff behind Ninku to help with Naruto. The manga is all over the place since everything after vol 6 is a prequel. But the anime is pretty good. This game looks weird, but the anime is solid.

Anyone else have this game freeze on Saroo when selecting a mode?

Wow...this looks genuinely terrible

Ive never watched the anime this is based on but I have played this game before.

This represents the 90's era of "digitized sprite" games.

First example being the arcade fighter Pit Fighter
Followed by Mortal Kombat: the most successful and well known of the subgenre

Basically "Digitize sprite" as opposed to hand drawn traditional video game sprite, is when you either photograph an image frame by frame, or record a person in motion, then transport that as sprites into a game.

Mortal Kombat, Pit Fighter, Way of The Warrior, Kasumi Ninja, Blood Omen, Tattoo Assassins, Jackie Chan Fist of Fire, Bikini Karate Babes, Ultraman Powers, Clayfighter, Dino Rex, Primal Rage, Street Fighter The Movie the Game etc

Anime games that did this, incorporated traditonally anime cel shade frame art transposed into sprites

Examples besides this game:
Sailor Moon (3DO), Yu Yu Hakusho (3DO). Dragonball Z Ultimate Battle 22/Shin Butouden (PS1/Saturn), Pretty Fighter X (Saturn). There was also an anime crossover RPG for PSP that did this.

The problem with digitize sprite back in the day (Bikini Karate Babes 1 & 2 had less of this issue since they were made post 2000), is that, particularly with the anime ones since Anime cel frames arent cheap to make, is the framerate was often atrocious and choppy because less frames were used.

Ninku actually out of all the anime ones, played the most fluidly actually. So the gameplay is actually decent.
Its main problem actually imo was the cheap CPU reading all your moves.
I imagine this wont be a problem if youre playing against another human of course
Post automatically merged:

Could this be a contender for Matt McMuscles "Worst Fighting Game" series, or are the mechanics better than the visuals?

mechanics better than the visuals. Cheap CPU opponents its biggest flaw imo

This game isn't very good, but man... the soundtrack is incredible!

The anime's animation is pretty great though you may get out off by its episodic structure. Watch episode 41 in particular, its style is really unique (you don't really need to have watched anything before it)
Yeah, I really do just enjoy a lot of this era's animation style and quality, which was making me think I might as well give it a chance. I'll take your word and watch 41 then.

(That randomly reminded me, but it would be cool if the Blue Seed game got a fan translation. I remember years ago watching some of the show and thinking the game looked promising)

I still don't even really know what Ninku about, but I always thought that character was ugly as shit lol
Still, always happy to see more Saturn fan translations though. Maybe I'll just try watching an episode or two of the anime and seeing if it appeals to me at all and then give this a shot.

How have I not heard of this game? The whole thing looks amazing! Especially how they pulled off the 3D aspect.

This game isn't the absolute worst fighting game out of the Saturn library but it's definitely not the best either. I'd say it's one of those... C tier fighting games at best. I've played worse...

I have an English Patched Collection Archive on my Internet Archive account, and this time I was FASTER than the repo.

Hey, I remember watching the anime of this...

And I still don't friggin' understand it
