Ninja Gaiden 2 Black Shadow-dropped Alongside Announcement of Ninja Gaiden 4

2025 is onto an incredible start already, last night on the Xbox direct, Team Ninja izuna dropped a giant bombshell on all of us announcing both a new entry as well as a huge remastered overhaul to the 7th gen classic, Ninja Gaiden 2.

Keep in mind, a different Ninja Gaiden announcement preceded this in the form of Ragebound’s announcement in The Game Awards last year, a 2D spinoff of this iconic hack and slash series.

Ninja Gaiden 2 Black now on Game Pass, enhanced via Unreal Engine 5

While available on PS5 and Steam, 2 Black can be played right via the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription option, only for $19,99. A rather cheap alternative compared to getting it full price.

As of the time of writing this, I haven’t encountered any gigantic changes, the game is absolutely gorgeous and well-deserving of the UE5 treatment. There’s an easy mode added in the name of “Hero Time”, but it’s largely ignorable. Still, more people playing this classic can only be a net positive!

The gore has been added back, but this is still Sigma 2

While it’s great that we get a more enhanced version of this iconic 360 brawler, it is necessary to stress out this has the gore from OG2 added back, but retains everything else from Sigma 2, this means that your purchase will essentially hinge on how you feel about that version particularly and whether or not the additions are enough to persuade to make the purchase.

It doesn’t quite help that Sigma 2 is already on most modern hardware, while OG2 remains a 360 exclusive much like Black 1, only playable via Xbox is Backwards Compatibility program.

Ninja Gaiden 4 is announced

The Xbox Developer Direct, not only did we get more footage of Doom: The Dark Ages, a game that’s on its way to set the gaming world on fire, but we got the most unexpected announcement in the form of a brand new entry to the iconic character-action series.

It seems like there’s gonna be a new playable character on top of things. There’s a lot to look forward to here and the new remaster of the second game also gives us a taste of how the game will look visually!

Not into 3D? No problemo!

Even if you’re a Ninja Gaiden fan who never got into the 3D slashers, you still have your bases covered in the form of Ragebound, a new 2D entry in lord knows how long! Admittedly, this author is a little more nostalgic for the 2D games so this might be more up my alley too!

Are you excited about Ninja Gaiden’s climactic return? Izuna-drop your enemies in the comment section below!

It's funny. Just before the NG4 reveal I was thinking about beating the NES Ninja Gaiden. I'm not saying that I willed the game into existence, but that's one hell of a coincidence.

I don't have enough time to play NGB2, but I believe it's an improved version of Sigma 2, which means the content from NG2 will be missing again. Sigma 2 is technically the better game, as NG2 had some questionable content, such as the giant worm boss, who felt like a drag, and some unbalanced boss fights that could kill you almost instantly. But at the same time, the worms' stage was pretty cool. Also, the puzzles will be missing. Itagaki probably wanted to create something like NG, but they didn't give him enough time. I recall reading that Itagaki was taking too long to finish NG2, and they were getting frustrated since he wasn't giving them any updates. Either way, the new graphical upgrade is gorgeous, and I wonder if there's any extra content.

So now the play order it's Sigma 1 -> NGB2 -> NG3 ?
Honestly, NGB1 is pretty solid as well. To some, it’s the definitive Ninja Gaiden (1) experience. What I dislike about NGB1 is the camera, and having to press pause to use potions and items. However, it offers more outfits like NG2, and certain stages, according to some, feel better. Also, the definitive version of NG3 is Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge.
All in all, it depends on the player. The only downside is that NGB and NG2 are xbox exclusives.

I'm so glad both 2D and 3D NG are having a comeback but man is it a little bittersweet to me that NG2B is just a remaster of Sigma with gore put back in instead of being based on the original NG2. Sigma kinda biffed the balance of NG2 by reducing enemy counts and removing some of the (admittedly more fucked up) gimmicks from OG. Wish we could just get a remaster with both versions available but ah well, Sigma is still a good game.

Heh, that makes two of us then! Only PG game I liked was MGR lol

You cannot not like a game with Senator Armstrong.

Anarchy Reigns was one of the best games I ever played and probably the PG game that would benefit the most from a modern port with online, but not gonna happen.

Mad World was pretty sweet too.

Isn't this a remake of Sigma 2 but with the uncensored gore? Because if what I've heard is true than that's really disappointing.
Sigma 2 is already on pc while OG 2 is still relegated to the 360 (or Xenia but the emulation isn't there quite yet) so I see no point in this release.

I'm kinda scared seeing PG on that alongside Team Ninja. The trailer already has too many parry to my taste.
Yeah, I really hope they don't screw this up. It's ironic how these days seeing Platinum's name on a game makes me worried, I feel that the last good game they made is Bayonetta 2, and that was over 10 years ago. Kamiya also left and probably took with him most of the talent from that studio
