Well, I must say if this is true and the price isn't too high and PS6 is similar in price, I might actually consider getting an X-Box next gen instead of PS6. I really really hate paid online. All I really want is to play multiplayer with Monster Hunter.

Even better, maybe...there's a tiny infinitesimal chance Sony and Nintendo ditches it just to remain competitive.
~OOC~
Honestly, as much as they will probably charge for it, guessing around $600 for the basic model entry point. And as much as they will make from digital-only game sales, DLC, cosmetics, etc., they shouldn't charge for online multiplayer.

Most likely not true but I heard rumors that the system could be close to 1k in price

Sony would follow, most likely.
There's no way. This is the same company that told us we'd all happily work more hours at our jobs to be able to afford a PS3, after all 😜

Sony is in the driver's seat in the console market, where they can charge whatever they want for their products or services, knowing full well people will pay their price. Nintendo is in a similar position.

Microsoft is desperate - they're saying and doing anything they can to keep their brand relevant. And, in my opinion, they are failing at that. Spectacularly. Though I do find it a little humorous that the first console maker to charge a monthly subscription to their online services is now also the first one talking about ditching the fees...

(Yes, yes, I know Sega sometimes charged on a per-game basis for some of their Dreamcast titles, but access to the larger SegaNet service was still free. I never paid a dime to play anyone online in NFL 2K1, for example!)

Also, side note: there is no "-" in "Xbox." At least, not anymore! The brand name is simply "Xbox," as one solid word. Similar to how people want to write "eBay" as "e-Bay" - those days are long gone 😇

It's difficult to express my sentiment without getting modded, but AFAIK in practice free online is even worse. PS2/PS3's network infrastructure never compared to the finest Xbox multiplayer offerings. Sony was just lucky public opinion turned against the Xbox One launch somewhere.

Its the XBOX PC, run fully on Xbox FSE on windows 11 is the same on ASUS XBOX ALLY handheld and avaiable on any Windows 11 PC next year orso.
Its a strippeddown PC.
So ofcourse the multiplayer can be free because they are Windows games.

Considering the rumored next gen Xbox is looking to be a sort of high end, hybrid PC-Console, basically a PC, probably using that new Win 11 gaming front end that the Xbox Ally is using, with a compatibility layer for Xbox games from Series and below. I kinda expect multiplayer would be free at the very least, but either way hopefully this leads to Sony and Nintendo taking notice in some way.

Makes sense, next Xbox will be just a prebuild PC with W11 and a Xbox overlay.

Hopefully Sony does the same, keep the "game subscription" but let me play online for a product I already bought.

i did not have "microsoft doing something good" on my bingo card this year... weird fucking times we live in, folks.

My hope (probably futile hope) is that the next XBox's OS is a variation of W11 or something else entirely that doesn't have Copilot or constant backup or monitoring your files or anything else that adds bloat which slows down or induces frame skips on your games. Plus free online and isn't insanely overpriced. And that companies like Capcom will make games that are optimized for the console unlike the troubles they have on Steam with Monster Hunter Wilds.

That could work. But I'm not crossing my fingers.

I played PC, Dreamcast, PS2, PS3 and Wii games online for free. Why isn't it free anymore? Oh right, because Microsoft introduced the lovely idea of paying for it and now all of them do it.

Developers should honestly be pissed. Their online games would likely be more lively if everyone didn't have to pay monthly or yearly just to play online. Why are free-to-play games playable without a subscription but the rest aren't? It makes no damn sense. No wonder free-to-play games like Fortnite, Marvel Rivals, Roblox, Apex, etc., do so well.

I sadly doubt it, Microsoft is already on the business of AI training (and AI overall), and thats why I think they are pushing the screen shot on W11 or the Copilot that spyes on your gaming sessions turned on by default. On console it will probably be forced.

On the plus side, if this forced AI is true, then I think they could go for a really lower price (now that the player is also paying by training its AI), even tho some rumors suggest that the next Xbox will be a "Premium experience" (it was said by Bond herself iirc)

I really just suggest you to either go into lower generations or just jump into PC or PlayStation (for now). Xbox is done, we have the Dreamcast moment a while ago. And I say this with grieve in my heart btw.
