Yeah well basically I've been meaning to get into touhou for a couple of years now and some1 recommended I start with EoSD(which I did). I'm totally new to this and I SUCK. Honestly I don't think there's ever been a game which I'm particularly good at. That aside, any tips for a total beginner? I can barely get past 2nd stage..

Despite what the fanbase will tell you, there's no shame in starting on Easy. While you're still learning, stick close to the bottom of the screen and focus more on dodging than playing aggressively.

You just have to keep playing until you get the hang of it, lol. If anybody knows a better way to get good I'm all ears. Also, Reimu and Marisa have different stats, along with the amulets. Try all combinations until you find the one you like better.

its mainly about repetition above anything, it will take a bit before you start getting the hang of it. just stick to the bottom, focus on the bullets near you more than the whole screen, spam shoot, and try to dodge. don't forget to use bombs if you feel overwhelmed by bullets. have fun! ᗜˬᗜ

I've played a bit of 6,7,8. I still suck at it, but compared to when I first started playing I'm actually able to barely beat the game.

For tips, don't be afraid to use bombs and try to keep your eyes on your character at all times. Using shift or whatever to slow/focus is key to surviving. Also, just practice and practice.

Watch someone play a level you're stuck on. I watched this one guy that had indicators of where hitboxes are. One thing the game likes to do is have bullets that are visually bigger than their hitboxes to throw you off. Funnily enough Embodiment of Scarlet Devil has a lot of this.

I have played every single mainline Touhou + spin-offs + a lot of fangames:

Shift slows you down and lets you see your hitbox, depending on the game it also changes your shots.

Spellcards look harder than they actually are, if its too intimidating, focus on your character and their immediate surroundings.

Don't fully back yourself up to either the bottom or a corner (Only exception is if you know jerking).

Reimu is better for learning spellcard patterns, in every game.

Learn streaming (moving slowly to one side while grazing shots).

Easy is for cowards, normal is acceptable, hard is fine, lunatic defines both the difficulty and the player willing to do it.

You don't have to start with EoSD, DDC is a fine starting point too, at this point no Touhou fan cares which game you started on, as long as you ain't a spin-off pleb. LoLK is the hardest one, so leave it for last.

If you use a spellcard (bomb) the exact moment you get hit, you don't loose a life (spellcard save), its very difficult to pull-off reliably, fan-games are more lenient on the timing, so you can practice there.

Its mostly memorizing patterns and muscle memory, spellcards that are completely random are very rare.

If you go to the top of the screen, you character will collect all the drops automatically, but its risky af.

Not the knives though. Those are deceptively dangerous
