a thread version of a status I made, though if this is in the wrong forum, let me know.

Needs some advice.

I'm working on a a fan game, and it's chugging along decently well. I think I'm at 55% done. just have to get the players blasters to work, and to get the health bats to look nice. after that gameplay it's all menues and music. But it's a fan game, so I don't think I'll make money on it. but it's a fan game for a series that is down in the dumps.

Or do I swap to making something original? I have something on my work bench that is about 30% gameplay done, and Ascetically interesting if a little overpowering. I might be able to convince some friends to Voice act in it, to add a bit of lore or a one level tester, but I'd have to actually model things.

All this to delay until i can afford a new computer that isn;t going to be destroyed by Unreal.

Halp

Might as well take a break and spare the stress of decision. Then try that more incomplete game. Good luck!

The game looks great! 🔥

I just say that i have been in a similar situation myself (a fan story in my case) and i chose to continue as a fan story.
Later it grew a lot, and i can't detach it anymore.

If you think it can eventually turn into something great, go for original option while you still can.
If you think being connected to another series can add enough value to it to justify restrictions of being a fangame... you can go for it.

Ultimately it's your choice... and either way, wishing you the best! 😊

I had a prolonged break after my house got torn down and I became a couch surfer from '20-'23. I want to get back in the action. I just have to fight my own motivation issues.

I know it's my choice, but I also have to face that it's mostly just me, and if I don't make my games who is? I know a fan game for a popular series will get made some day, but I could be that first.

But I also have a tingle for genres that have more room to grow, like arcade racing and flight action. if I can get my butt in gear I might even want to try split screen. not for these games tho

Personally, I'd remove all association with it being a fan game directly based on an IP (I assume it's Freelancer, or maybe Freespace?), that way, if you do decide to go commercial down the line, you won't have a sweaty lawyer knocking on your door.

Fair, but depending on the IP, they might not even mind. Sonic, Mega Man and Touhou being obvious examples of the holder not giving a fuck along with Mother.

This is one of the reasons why I picked Halo. On my short list was Star Fox and that would get me the lit up by the eye of Nintendo

The game looking so good. Well about moddeling I suggest you:
1)try to keep texture resolution the same
2) don't forget you want to make a game so the models shouldn't be so high resolution.
3)never forget redesign and retexture used models. This work help you to work faster
For game making you said unreal engine.(I though so) never forget to add notes on codes. With this notes you can work really faster and even manage to use them in future.
Unreal and C are so powerful. But this power can be so complicated.
I hope your game become popular.
Even if you don't get money for first, who said it will happend for a second?

if your medels have too many polygons, you can try some type of quad remesh and then bake a normal map and you can achieve a similar look if thats what you are going for

making a game takes ages. it might be quicker to work on a fangame if you can ripoff assets, but for me i dont know how people invest so much time in a fangame if they cant have the rights to it. id go original but thats just me (or originial but really similar to something great). If you have art skills especially. If you have programming skills moreso it might go the other way. Having said that the best Game ive played recently was Knights and Dragons, a fangame of king of dragons and he did a great job, its better than the original

I currently work to improve my c++ on c turbo by making an snake game on it.
A lot of time main thing is your own idea and works. Doing works alone can be hard, that's why you should seek others and learn to work with them.
