I will kick things off with Mr Vampire, if was funny, had awesome stunts and an interesting story which shows some of the deep culture of china in an entertaining and digestible way.

Magic Cop was another favorites of mine, the idea of fighting monsters in modern (80s) Hong Kong, as a police officer who also does magic.

Wicked City while not true to the manga, or the anime, was still a wild ride, and i enjoyed this as much as the others i have mentioned. Some have had re-releases on blue ray and even dvd, but not all, and a lot are dead media at this point.

There are so many wonderful movies from this time frame, that i could not fit them all here. And i am unsure how niche this stuff is / was.

Please share your experiences.

Well there's a lot of great choices, and most of the classic Jackie Chan movies for example are from the period of time, but here's one I don't see brought up as much.

Eastern Condors (1987) is basically Sammo Hung showing Rambo how to DO IT, and he's right to do so. This one's amazing.

He does!
I was expecting Hard Boiled to be the first response, that movie is an absolute masterpiece of course. In my top 5 of all time for sure.
Oh, if we’re talking THE best, then yeah it’s probably Hard Boiled. (Maybe, John Woo had other greats, and the corniest part of me loves Fist of Legend).

Eh I was just about to post again to mention A Better Tomorrow, hell yeah.

I entirely forgot about that until just now, great movie; I should watch it again.

Far too many to mention from the usual suspects of John Woo, Jackie, Chow, Jet Li

So let's go with Iron Monkey, Swordsman II, Zu Warriors from the Magic Mountain, Eight Diagram Pole Fighter, Clan of the White Lotus, Shaolin Soccer, Election I + II and the opening scene from Saviour of the Soul

All amazing titles, as no one is mentioned it yet, i will add:

A Chinese Ghost story, which had a series of films, with the first two imo being the best. Amazing action and stunt work in these films.

And my god, the sound track was magical!

Well, my favourite one is not just a simple Hong Kong movie, but one of the last Bruceexploitation movies who was created to keep the spirit and feeling of that actors who wanted sometime act like the eternal Bruce Lee after his mysterious but solved death in 1973.

And this movie is The Game of Death 2(or Tower of Death in Europe and South Korea)

Created by Golden Harvest(who at that time have the late Raymond Chow as his CEO), alongside Lee's Concord Productions, The Game of Death 2 is one of the last Bruceexploitation movies who ends an era of excentric and glory of martial arts movies, even at that period who a new star known as Jackie Chan are rising[Note: this movie is from 1981, as Chan's first and important movie, Battle Creek Brawl, are from 1980, one year before]. When I watched this movie in first time on 2002 here in Brazil in my old VHS acessory(and I still have him today, but stored in somewhere in my house), it was a great moment to see another movie featuring Bruce Lee, even I was don't known if he are dead or alive. The fighting scenes(in fact using stock footage from Lee's notorious movies, such as The Orphan and Enter The Dragon in the first half before the appearance of the other protagonist) are good, as Golden Harvest in fact hired an actor who acts as Lee himself. When the character who dubbed Lee dies and replaced by other character, with full screen scenes, the true movie in fact beguns, showing better fighting scenes as the plot evolves.

One part of this movie include a(not so do) uncensored pseudo-sensualized scene, when the secondary protagonist are seduced by a american blonde woman, who is in fact is an assassin, but luckly the character discovers and stops her, following by a power outage and a lion entering in the house when the two are together(this scene is sometimes funny, because the lion who appears is an costumed stuntman who made the viewer believing that he is in fact a hungry lion). The lion escapes, but first killing the woman. And speaking of that blonde woman, she(played by Melissa Austin - where is she now??) was not the only west person who appears in the movie. There are another non-asian character who appears in the movie named Lewis(played by late Roy Roran), who interacts with the secondary protagonist but is killed by another character. His death turns his movie to a huge problem, named writting. As this movie is named originally The Game of Death 2, the movie WOULD BE FEATURED Lewis as one of possible villains, since he in fact dislikes the secondary protagonist and are secretly studing a form to defeat and killing him. The true villain are the man who appears training Kenpo in the beginning of the movie, in wich great amount of the movie where considered death in order to hide from the public, as he is the real killer of the secondary protagonist's brother(the character using Bruce Lee stock footages). The villain must be the ally of Lewis, but the movie don't explained.

Besides the problems of writting, the movie is a great example who sometimes Bruceexploitation movies can be interesed to see and rewatch in various forms. About the cast, half of the main actors sadly was passed away various years after the production of the movie ended. This includes the secondary protagonist actor(played by Tong Lung), the actor who played the movie villain and, I was mentioned, Roy Roran, who played Lewis. This last one was interviewed on the US version's DVD re-release.

Speaking of the international releases, The Game of Death 2 also have different censorships depending of the region of the globe are distributed, but not in the same vain The Big Boss has(or Fists of Fury, Bruce Lee's first notorious movie). As I known, the europeian version adds scenes of Lee's first movies when he was child and later a teen - explaining as part of the movie story the childhood of Lee's character, Billy Lo - while the US version possibly cuts this part(this footage scenes also inserts scenes of Bruce Lee's funeral as the funeral held to Billy). And strangely, the seduction scene between Bobby Lo and the blonde woman Angel where kept in every version. The ending uses photos of Lee's notorious movies such as the mentioned The Big Boss.

To complete my post, here in Brazil, there are THREE DUBS for this movie. The first one is made by defunct studio Marshmallow in 2002, who was owned by veteran dubbing director and sound composer Mario Lucio de Freitas(best known here of making exclusive BGM tracks done in an amount of dubs of mexican sitcoms El Chapulin Colorado and El Chavo, both huge popular in my country). This dub follow the US version, named Lee and Lung as the Lo brothers Billy and Bobby respectivly as example. The second dub was made exclusive for DVD and was make on the unknown studio Engedits, using the europeian version and following the original names of the characters, including the brothers(named Lee Chen-chiang and Lee Chen-kwok respectivly). And the third and last dub also uses the europeian version, but was done in a unknown studio(possible one of those ones who dubs animes commissioned by Netflix and/or Crunchyroll) and is exclusive for the Blu-ray release. I don't know more of the third dub, but I discover this fact in a martial arts site here.

One day in early 90's my dad brought this movie in a old Betamax videocassette along with some other action movies such Rambo's trilogy and some cheesy italian war movies. (he was the owner of a couple of pawn shops) When I moved those movies were lost. Not long ago I was able to see it on YouTube

I like John Woo movies a lot. My favorite is this movie:

In this movie I love the duality and "another side of the medallion" aspect between a criminal and the cop and how the movie reflects the situation of why a person may be criminal and how being criminal actually doesn't necessarily mean "bad". Not to mention there are really bad people that make society require "necessary evils" to deal with because heroes and law are not enough.

While it's a very enjoyable action movie but I like the way the movie is more than that. Even watching how characters interact with each other is fun to watch!!!

I think the duality between humanized criminal and corrupt cop is a common theme in hong kong cinema. infernal affairs, that movie you just mentioned and probably many others. I remember watching a tv show (can't remember the name) in the 90s about two brothers separated at a young age. One went into the police force and another became a criminal. They face off at several times and they have that conflict of following their paths in life while not trying to harm each other. I wish I could remember the name of the series, it was really good.

Well, such a sense of duality is part of Asian philosophy/culture/religion so no wonder. "Darkness cannot exist without lightness" and vice versa and "where there is good, because there is good there will be bad" and vice versa. Perhaps I like this movie because it's more "deeper" and "intimate" about this duality.

Fundamentally, what may be different is a "deeper" and "correct" reflection of how humans are at a fundamental level. The characters are not "black and white" criminal and cop. The personality of the criminal is very deep to enjoy throughout the whole movie. Eventually, the characters start to symbolise something touching more to the human soul beyond simple "criminal" and "cop" terms, things become more than a "common goal".

The other movies keep the situation in a dramatic aspect just for the sake of a story and they all stay in the context of society. However why I like this movie is more about it goes beyond humanity it touching upon the meaning of what it means to be a life form, having a soul, mind and emotions and then these aspects are mirrored to our simple trivial lives. In that regard, this movie has a special place in my heart.
