N64 N64 Expansion Pak Question

I have an N64 with which I use a flash cart to load my games. The problem is, I don't have an Expansion Pak. Is there any way to play games that require the Expansion Pak without having to invest in one? Anything I can load onto my flash cart to work around this? I'm kinda taking shots in the dark, as I know the pak increases the RAM of the console itself so it would be kinda hard (or even impossible) to "simulate" one, but I figured I'd check before I blow money on it.

From my understanding only certain games will limit the content or will not work without it
DK 64 and Zelda MM would not boot and Perfect Dark would not let play the campaign.
Since the expansion pack is a hardware addon I don't think you can bypass it with the flashcart, maybe it could be done through software emulation, but since the flashcart uses the base memory of the N64 I doubt it

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Perfect Dark (otherwise, most of the game is inaccessible. Required in Japan)
and Indiana jones and the infernal machine.
you should have gotten an expansion pak with your n64 unless you got an early model. it mostly just helps a bit with frame rates and graphics if i remember correctly.
i found a wiki page with some games listed that benefit form the pak, so you can see if it would be helpful to purchase one or not.

On physical hardware, no. the Expansion Pak add's 4 MB of ram to the N64.
so no real way of getting around it. you could probably find a cheap 3rd party one.

i'd say go ahead and get one. it not only lets you play those three games, but about 40 other games benefit from it too. you can most likely find a decently cheap one on amazon or at a retro game store.

You could always go open source and probably save a bit. Check out the "OEM N64 Expansion Pak" project on github. One might download Kaicad and order one on PcbWay if one was so inclined.

I know of one game that doesn't play nice with the expansion pak and that's Space Station: Silicon Valley. There's a fix: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/3719/

Yeah, that’s where I am as well. I was in your same boat a few weeks back, especially having just gotten a SummerCart. I wanted to play 64 DD and fangames, but the expansion pack is required for that kind of stuff.

What it adds is internal ram. That means it gives the system more random access memory to work with, allowing it to pull assets from a much larger pool than the standard console. Many games, like those I just listed, require that larger pool of RAM to function.

Majora’s Mask needs it for its NPC’s AI routines. Perfect Dark needs it for its larger levels and world. DK 64, while having a myth about a bug, also used it to make its giant 3D world possible.

To add onto this, I’ve heard good things about the “TurboRAM” by InterAct. It retailed for the same price as the original at the time, but searching on EBay, you might be able to save up to $10 by going that route!
