As I’ve gotten into the SEGA side of things more and more and more over the last many months, I find myself constantly dreaming of what my ultimate goal is for my collection of SEGA stuff. And I’ve come very far! Especially on a college student’s budget which clashes so heavily with current retro game prices. I recently looked at my collection and said “I’m happy”. Not “I’m done” but “I’m happy where I am and I feel like I filled many of the holes in my collection so far.”

Which of course means I need to make more holes. I mean, come on. Why be satisfied and a functional human being when you can be an absolute trash gremlin hoarding old junk that only smelly people care about anymore? And, to unleash the smells, I will publish for all to see: my list of dreams.

I am STILL Master System-less. This has to change. All I know is these few things: I want this model. I want it to be region free (free the funny gaming nugget!). And I want it to AT LEAST have Shinobi, Phantasy Star 1, and 8-bit Sonic. There are other games, other things, other stuff that I want to see from it, but it needs to be in my home and have these key things before anything else. No special frills with this beast. No special version I want or anything (though, the recent TecToy one that’s all Sonic themed has me looking with great interest). I just want this Nugget in my home as my 8-bit console of choice. Because I’m a total freak who thinks this is more interesting than getting a NES (even though I want one of those too, but that’s more down the line because I’d want to make sure it lasts. U.S. region systems are FREAKY with trying to die on you.)

Gaze upon it. Isn’t it BEAUTIFUL? I want the tower. The whole tower of power. And I have the central component already: the SEGA Gene-Drive itself. Best bit: my console is a U.S. LAUNCH system. It’s from 1989. First batch that made it to shelves. I feel HONORED to have such a beautiful beast in my possession. I’ve cleaned her, taken such good care of her, maybe got a little over zealous with sticker application on it and put them on before giving it’s components a bath that they really need because they’re covered in decades of dust and human guff but oh well. She runs BEAUTIFULLY. And sounds amazing. But, like any father, I have unrealistic expectations from my children. In my case, I need a 32X (shouldn’t be hard. It’s expensive, but not over $300, so expect to see me get one by the end of the year), and I need a model 1 SEGA CD. This is, by all means, a horrible idea. Old disc drives are known for performing the march of sadness as they age, and so I’d have to ensure the one I get is pre-fixed up before it goes to me. I can clean things, but I am no good at fixing old disc drive issues. Especially one as notoriously fussy as the SEGA CD. I also would need to have it pre-modded to remove all the region coding and nastiness. It needs to be able to play burned games, it needs to be able to play repros, and it needs to be alive for me to play at a moment’s notice. And, the last major thing, I’ll need to send my sweet sweet Genny away to a modded (or do it myself but I’m an absolute chimp who doesn’t know what he’s doing) to mod it for RGB and stereo output. I want to still be able to plug headphones into it if I want to, but the console should absolutely connect to a television and output stereo goodness. This is A LOT, and it’s not even discussing the kinds of GAMES I’d want for all of it. But that’s okay. I know what games I want, and I also need to explore the library even more. And, if available, I’ll try to get an Everdrive or flash cart of some kind for the ultimate experience. The Mega Drive is a passion system for me, and I love my Genesis already. I pray that, as I get older, this thing will slowly evolve into a proud beast in my house where people will come over and ask “mate, what the eff is that?”

And I’ll be very proud to say “that’s a cumulative $2000 over the course of about a decade.”

SEGA Saturn. My console has been an absolute DREAM UNIT for me. The white and pink, the stickers I detailed it with, the FRAM mod, de-yellowed, all that. It’s actually been magical, and it’s been worth every single penny I’ve put into it. Been playing it basically as often as I can: no joke. But, it’s a Japanese unit! And I still LIKE the black color of the western unit. So, for my collecting goal, I want to perform dark sorcery. I want a U.S. model 1, all the launch games, and the box for the launch bundle with Virtua Fighter. That way, I can have both a Japanese Saturn and a U.S. Saturn, and they can both hold metaphorical hands in being awesome.

Also, I’d like a VCD card for my current system. It would be sick :)

Other than that, very few notes other than getting more games. Which is hard: Saturn be the big expense. But I’m so proud of where I am so far and I’m so hungry for more delicious Saturn goodness. This thing has been an amazing dream. Absolutely fantastic gaming nug.

Dreamcast and me have a contentious relationship. It’s tried to die on me many times. I hate its controller with a firey passion. But I love many of its games. And the whole aesthetic of it makes me forget all the bad things I was just saying (until the screaming of the disc drive reminds me again). On top of investing in two arcade sticks (my wallet burns from the thought) and getting it VGA’d and hooked up to the magical interwebs, I have decided that I need the Hello Kitty console. I need it. It’s so cute. It’s unimaginable how cute it is. And I want everything it came with. The horror of it would be that, after getting it, it would need to be region modded. But after that is done, the function will be that it will become my main unit for playing discs. What about my current console? Well, once the kitty has taken its place, it will be reborn… as an ODE having device. I proper HATE the disc drive on Dreamcast, real talk. But I love physical games. So, the dream is to have my cake and eat it too.

We don’t talk about how much such dreams will cost. Or how long this will take. I’ll probably be a proper father by the time the Dreamcast is in the state I laid out here.

Of course, on top of all this, there’s still some things left standing. I MAY want a Game Gear? Maybe. But that’s so much work, since I’d want the original screen GONE and replaced with one that actually looks good. And, aside from Shinobi GG and Sonic Triple Trouble, there isn’t much there to justify the investment in that platform. Honest: I have more games I want to play on the 32X than the Game Gear at the moment. I’m sure there’s great stuff on there, but it’s just not in my dreams right now.

No, I don’t want an SG-1000, 2000, or any other variant that thereof. No, I don’t want a Nomad. No, I don’t want any other freak variant of these consoles. These are my current SEGA dreams, and they’re big enough already.

Thoughts?

I can't deny the intimidation factor of the fully assembled Genesis Prime, that thing is imposing. I have a Genesis Model 2, it's one of the only physical retro consoles I own. Physical collecting is just far too expensive and predatory a market for me to personally get behind but I appreciate the dedication behind it.

So many friends of mine ended up with hoarding. From one hobby to the other. Three guitars on the wall of the living room and yet they don't play anymore. Vinyle records and a vintage hifi, but the only music playing is random Spotify. Miniatures never painted.

I think the worse was my grandmother. Back in the days when I was young she was so brainwwashed by infomercials that my parents had to cancel her credit card.

I hope some day you fill the imaginary hole you think you got and start playing videogames again.

Harsh, but hard to disagree with.

Then again, we all have "imaginary holes" that we [foolishly?] think we can fill with the stuff we buy. It reminds me of a Spock-ism: "Having is never as great as wanting. It is illogical, yet often true."

But in saying that, there's nothing wrong with wishing, or having a dream list as this user has.

One word of caution regarding the wishlist - those Hello Kitty consoles and accessories are VERY prone to discoloring and yellowing. It's one thing to use RetroBrite on the opaque white / gray plastic parts, but the translucent pink bits are very difficult - if not impossible - to return to their original state.

That's the one thing that you'll want to be sure you buy in pristine condition, if you decide to go that route. It will not be an easy thing to restore if you buy a cosmetically-challenged one.

Personally I emulated all those ancients in newadays tech handhelds/laptop: All better picture/control, handy/cheaper and compact on the go.
Just playing instead wasting.

Good news is Master System is already region free, so Sega took care of that for you 40 years ago. Thankfully you can just get a European Sonic instead of the almost impossible to find American release. Bad news is the Sonic games on the Master System aren't very good... Still there's lots of great stuff on the console. Wonder Boy 3, The Psychic World, Rescue Mission, and on and on.

Give it time. The way you're lusting after the fairly common stuff you've listed here, once you have it, it won't be enough.

My gf is a big fan of Visual Novel games & Hello Kitty, that Dreamcast is too cool.

this seems a little meanzors. there's nothing wrong with having and or wanting physical possessions, it is only human to want. so long as you responsibly want, and your want does not prevent you from enjoying your life today in anticipation of tomorrow, i think wanting a thing is a wholly reasonable thing. thing thing thingy thing
for example i once spent what would translate to sixty five united states dollars for a 1998 tifa lockhart statue of her giving a thumbs up and i have had it on my desk for years. yes it was sixty five monis for a purely vanity purchase, but i find it very charming to this day as it stands to the left of my computorz. ultimately as long as you do not let your possessions own you i think you will be fine wiggles fingers mesmerizingly

Hey hi BigStinkie!

I dont think my post here was mean, specially as I just used the same terms OP used in their post. I just wanted to share my experience because it genuinely reminded me of my grandmother's addiction. When she died, all that useless stuff she started hoarding after my grandpa's death went to the trashbin, as charities weren't even willing to take it for free.

It's a jungle out there and scalpers and scammers are out for your money, so just keep in mind that the most precious valuable resource you got in the end, is your time. It's both appalling that videogames from our youth are now paywalled by crazy prices and used as scams, and amazing that so much solutions are available for free to preserve them and allow the kids to experience them. I'm not here to judge your habits, and if you've got enough self-restrain and don't buy stuff compulsively, the more power to you!
