hello everyone !
sorry if this is not the right forum to post this on (i dont really see merch discussions but i am assuming its because merch is a common thing to others!) but i really want to share the stuff i bought !
ive never gotten any actual (original) merch of the stuff i like, it was always either selfmade or complete bootlegs. i never really minded it because i am broke and knew that im better off having no merch at all or buying chinese low quality bootlegs only but recently i finally got the chance to get my hands on actual original merch of my favorite games and anime! im very excited because this is my first time ever touching anything like that. this is my first time interacting with stuff like postcards or artbooks or acrylic stands or guidebooks or etc. and im really surprised by the quality and by the fact that owning such stuff feels so nice in a way.

made a little display set! i dont have a place to store all of this yet but this looks so unusual to me ! ive never been to a con or anything and the game stores where are live are not as colorful so this looks very weird to my eyes! so many colors its hard to process!

the japanese cds and games are genuinely so cheap ! and honestly thats not a bad thing, in a way im really happy to own the original versions of the games i like, although id really like to get the eu/us versions of them later on. solatorobo cartridge was relatively easy to get and i think i was lucky enough to buy this one for very, very cheap from a person that probably didnt know how much its actually worth, and the condition of the case and booklets is so good as well !
gitaroo man on the other hand ... it was somewhat hard, i really wanted to get the full game but only managed to find the demo disc, and even though its not the full game i would never not buy it ... its one of my most favorite games after all.
both the case and the booklets for gitaroo man are so beautiful and in such good condition. i was very worried that its gonna get here looking horrible (based on the listing pictures) but they look amazing.

the gitaroo man cd is beautiful as well, they all have such beautiful prints. i remember about 5 years ago i was looking at the cd scans, hoping i can get it for my birthday, and now its here !
im hoping to get more gitaroo man stuff as it seems to be very very rare, im hoping to find an ost cd one day as it has a very beautiful cd print as well and it would be amazing to own something of such rarity.

I have no idea what most of this is outside of FFX and Gitaroo Man, but i gotta say, that all looks really nice.

What's the one with the anime girl and the penguin?
It looks like a game for the Nintendo Switch, but I might be wrong?
(or it could be a pencil board. As I have seen now that I clicked on the image, but I'm still curious.)

Nope, it's a 2011 anime called Mawaru Penguindrum, created by Ikuhara (the creator of Revolutionary Girl Utena)

It is called ピングドラム。They sold merchandise in Daiso a couple of years ago for 100yen.

本当にありがとうございました。Thank you! I know of the series but have only ever seen the various covers and am unfamiliar with the characters. It's similar to how I know many 90s and 00s anime but have not seen them all. Thanks again.

いいえ。Although I don't know anything about it, I just happen to go usually to Daiso to pick up home supplies and there's a stand full of anime 100yen stuff, usually stickers, cards, keychains and other things and I saw those cute penguins and got curious, because I love birds :3

thank you a lot!
everything (other than mpd, ffx and gitaroo man) is from a nds game called solatorobo :) its a part of a franchise called little tail bronx. its a game for kids but im still very much obsessed with it ! :) and yes the quality of all the stuff i got is simply amazing.

Woah man what a wonderful haul that´s AWESOME.

I envy you.
death note fighting GIF
thank you a lot! but you really shouldnt envy me, anyone can get stuff like this :) it didnt cost that much if thats what youre talking about! im sure theres some kind of merch you (or anyone) would like and you can definitely get it for quite cheap (especially if its of popular franchises, but you should definitely try your luck) on japanese marketplaces. i used a proxy service called zenmarket. they are relatively cheap with fees and delivery, they ship fast and package everything very well for you too, so if you have spare 200-250usd and are looking for merch then id definitely suggest you look around and see what you can find :) most of the stuff here was from 2 to 15 dollars (with the exception of the solatorobo game/solatorobon 4/guide book) so i think you can definitely find something. if youre not looking for collectors stuff like me then ost cds alone can cost like 1-5 dollars if its a popular franchise (for example like the ffx one, and japanese ff games were like 5-15 dollars as well). it got from osaka to northern europe in about 8-11 days but the customs took 2-3 weeks (random hiccups, nothing serious).

hello! thank you! i am as well a huge gitaroo man fan! it was my introduction to japanese rock music, 326's art (and unusual artstyles in general) as well as ps games when i was a bit younger and didnt know about games as much :) i feel like its underrated in a way and more people should know about it .. it will forever be special to me and im very glad to own a demo disc :) i hope i can get more gitaroo man related stuff in the future !
and mawaru penguindrum is really good, everyone should watch it!

Thats an awesome collection. Didn't know Solatorobo had so much merch.

Also, nice Himari postcard, Penguindrum is very underated
thank you a lot! ltb truly gathered a large fanbase, its been cc2's passion project for a while now so even to this day theres a lot of solatorobo (and even tail concerto!) merch, even on their website :) im very glad that they value this franchise so much, im sure its special to a lot of people.
and yes penguindrum is really really special as well! im very glad that people on here can recognize it! :) its truly very underrated. i actually ordered another keychain (princess of the crystal) alongside the himari one but it got canceled, i was also thinking of buying the whole penguindrum manga collection (only 22 euros!!! insanely cheap considering the quality!!) but didnt have money for that at the time, maybe ill get the princess of the crystal figure and the whole manga collection some other time :)

i didnt know penguindrum was still this popular ! it would be amazing to randomly pick up merch like that. i wish we had something like this in europe too, and 100 yen is so cheap as well! i hope it piqued your interest back then (if you havent watched it yet), its a very good anime, one of my favorite ones :)

Well, I don't know what country are you from, but it's like if you have a few cartoons from there, from time to time you get merchandise in stores or other places for kids.

Since Japan has tons of local anime, as it is a strong part of their culture, for them is normal to see stuff from time to time at stores about old or not so old anime. Of course, when there is a new movie or something you can see tons of different merchandasing everywhere, not only Daiso, and when it is something very famous like Dragon Quest it's a lot of fun because you have even themed food (mainly sweets), and you never have to worry for the stock, they're literally everywhere. Last year I could eat tons of スライムむしパン、they had 3 flavours, my favourite was the black sesame one (grey). They were being sold at 100en Lawsons due the promotion of Dragon Quest I & II HD. There were many other things, it was a lot of fun.

These are from the promotion of Dragon Quest Monsters 3, but when they released Draque III HD they did it again, and then again with Draque I & II HD.

It's very rare that they forget completely about something, you end finding stuff from that specific anime in 100yen stores, Taito Station, UFO Catchers or gashapon.

In Europe it works differently. Consumism is not that high and they have too many prejudices about doing stuff like that, because people is still living in stone age and think this kind of stuff is only for "children", so they don't need to make any effort because they educate children from early stages to be low demanding in quality. Toys for children in Japan are very high quality and detailed because they simply refuse to do low quality things, as they are educated through hard work and high standards, something any other country only dreams about.

oh wow, thank you for the lesson! i really didnt know that kids are more "demanding" in japan and that japanese toys are higher quality. judging by the stuff that i got today - yea, they definitely put MUCH more thought into these things than ive expected. they would have NEVER put so much thought into things in europe. i never expected books, pins, postcards, everything else to be of such high quality. when i was looking through listings on zenmarket i felt the same about toys and figures.
im not sure if you live in japan and whether youre talking from experience but yes, i did know that theres media themed foods, easily available merchandise, cafe events, etc., but i thought this is insanely expensive or simply not very common. i never knew that theres racks of cheap merch in stores.

yes, im in europe. i dont know about consumerism rates in europe, but i can tell that from my perspective japanese consumerism is very high. i kind of wish i could get more stuff, but at the same time i still stand by the "low consumerism" mindset - in a way i feel guilty getting all this stuff because, well, maybe, as youve said, i have actually been brainwashed to be less demanding in quality, so getting figures or merch like the one i received today is something insanely unusual to me.
you can barely get anything here and such things as "100 yen merch" is something you can usually buy in those stores that have a lot of random cheap chinese stuff, but of course its 10x more expensive + theyre bootlegs + most of the time whatever youre looking for is not even there. you cant get anything anime/gaming related - thats only in gaming stores, and its usually very expensive, like idk, 8-15 euros? thats why ive never gotten any merch, only pirated and got bootlegs on my birthdays. paying 6-12 euros for a keychain is something i could never afford because i believe it should cost much less so i always refused to waste my money on that.
its so amazing that they remember about older anime/games too. i really didnt know that, that is amazing. here in europe its mostly whatevers the most popular. recently we started getting some demon slayer and jujutsu kaisen merch. its usually one piece, dragon ball z, naruto, pokemon. that is kind of it. then theres popular stuff like marvel/dc, but thats completely unrelated. if youre lucky you can maybe spot something in the gaming store, but its usually just complete garbage. i saw a yosuga no sora figure there once, thats the niche-est things ive seen irl. another "niche" merch ive seen more of is genshin impact and squid game. its very disappointing... im really hoping its better in western europe though.

i dont know japanese, im not entirely sure what these buns are but i really wish something like that would finally get to europe, im hoping that its better in more progressive countries/cities and that one day ill be able to either go to japan myself or attend an expo/con and get myself some proper high quality merch too. id love to try these.

thank you a lot! im hoping everyone else will be able to get whatever merch makes them happy too :)
im glad to finally start building a collection, im hoping to get a proper display shelf one day and much much more merch !

Yeah, all you say is the reality in Europe and probably in the rest of western countries. I've experienced that as well, and when I was a kid I had a hard time with toys and other stuff "for kids". It is unknown why I developed this sense of quality because anyone in my family is like this, but when I used to receive toys I wasn't usually happy and they never understood why.

But you're in the right spot, I also refused to buy many overpriced things in my mother country just because people think I am silly and I don't know how much they cost. I've even seen original japanese things with the price printed on them (good japanese practice) being sold for 3 or 4 times what is printed, and no shame whatsoever. That is like insulting me on my face, and that is not a respectful thing to do to a customer.

I am between Japan and Europe, because I have very good friends in both places, but my plan is to stablish in Japan forever when I am able to do so, as there is no other country that meets my quality of life requirements.

I hope you can go to Japan soon and enjoy wherever you go. I went once to Tokyo Game Show because I was curious and it was fascinating, tons of companies showing beta games, very friendly and the overall scene was very healthy and respectful. I got lost, because the place was incredibly big, but I ended in a place where I could see an interview with Yamaoka Akira and Uematsu Nobuo. I couldn't understand many of what they were talking about but it made me feel like my country's events are like a gathering of a bunch of homeless cosplayed, and the price of the entrance was cheaper in Tokyo Game Show.

I really encourage you to go whenever you can, and I hope you feel as happy as I did the first time I placed my foot in Japan :)

oh god akira yamaoka and nobuo uematsu interview is a dream come true, i wish i could see that as well, that sounds amazing. thank you for telling me (and all the other people) all of this, you are interesting and nice to talk to !
i think having an eye for the figures/merch/toys is good, although i cant say the same about myself. not that ive been overpaying, im kind of used to being "low demanding" regarding my stuff. i really like soviet plush toys, although for some reason a lot of people think theyre low quality and not really good, i find a lot of low quality stuff really charming due to the nostalgia.
i have a friend in hongkong that would tell me all about original anime figures selling for like what... 15-30 euros? and that theyd just store them on the floor, in a big storage room. i always wished she would get me one a figure or two lol, i wish it was this easy to get figures in europe. you have to jump through fire hoops to get a 15cm figure that costs less than 25 euros. it was always so disgusting to me that theyd be 2-4 times more expensive than they actually are, im still not sure where to get cheap original ones (bulk buying of course) but im hoping to figure it out.

i wish to go to japan but probably as a tourist, but i feel like that would kind of be unsatisfactory anyway. i wish to visit all the places you were talking about, i want to go to expos, see interviews, play beta games, etc, but i feel like its a bit hard if you dont know the language and that may somehow ruin the experience for you. seeing all the text on the banners and posters and not knowing what it all means is somewhat frustrating to me. id love to see the interview but i wish i knew what theyre talking about too. i get easily frustrated and anxious in such places too, even taking a plane is too anxiety inducing if im being honest, and now that i think about it i feel like japanese mentality might be too complex for me but im still hoping to visit japan one day despite me being frustrated and anxious. i do think its a nice place, definitely differs from what im used to (youre probably well aware of what im talking about).
as for me im not sure where i want to stay forever, i think japan is a good choice if you know what youre signing up for, im honestly still thinking about it, but yeah higher quality of life is still non negotiable to me.

thank you a lot ! im glad that there are people recognizing it, its far more many people than ive expected, im very happy!! are you a casual ltb/solatorobo enjoyer? im very much obsessed with it, its been my favorite game for a while ! :) i love the worldbuilding and characters very very much.
one of the main reasons why i decided to get all of this is elh, she is so lovely ! i just wanted to look at the original art of her, looking at fanarts and scans wasnt enough for me !

To be honest i only played sola to robo the red hunter on NDS. But god damn the battle mechanic are super fun to play with. Sadly i forgot most of the stories lol i believe i played it like 6 years ago.

One thing i don't really like was the flying mini games (i suck at racing game okay)

i have a friend in hongkong that would tell me all about original anime figures selling for like what... 15-30 euros? and that theyd just store them on the floor, in a big storage room. i always wished she would get me one a figure or two lol, i wish it was this easy to get figures in europe. you have to jump through fire hoops to get a 15cm figure that costs less than 25 euros. it was always so disgusting to me that theyd be 2-4 times more expensive than they actually are, im still not sure where to get cheap original ones (bulk buying of course) but im hoping to figure it out.

i wish to go to japan but probably as a tourist, but i feel like that would kind of be unsatisfactory anyway. i wish to visit all the places you were talking about, i want to go to expos, see interviews, play beta games, etc, but i feel like its a bit hard if you dont know the language and that may somehow ruin the experience for you. seeing all the text on the banners and posters and not knowing what it all means is somewhat frustrating to me. id love to see the interview but i wish i knew what theyre talking about too. i get easily frustrated and anxious in such places too, even taking a plane is too anxiety inducing if im being honest, and now that i think about it i feel like japanese mentality might be too complex for me but im still hoping to visit japan one day despite me being frustrated and anxious. i do think its a nice place, definitely differs from what im used to (youre probably well aware of what im talking about).
as for me im not sure where i want to stay forever, i think japan is a good choice if you know what youre signing up for, im honestly still thinking about it, but yeah higher quality of life is still non negotiable to me.

thank you a lot and thank you for engaging! i was a bit worried that posts like this would get overlooked (since its of no substance really) but this amount of engagement just makes me believe that i made the right choice sharing this here so im very happy that i did !
But you are totally right, each country has their own figures and their quality is the original one. It does not matter if soviet plushies are usually not good quality, as long as they are original and not a chinese copy. If russian culture is not in the quality side it does not mean it is not worth having if you like them. What I don't like is when people try to sell me bootlegs like they were the original thing like the original thing would be expensive. Of course japanese figures are expensive, but their quality is very high. Moreover, the price of figures varies a lot depending on the maker, and since a few years ago you can buy original japanese figures from low cost brands at very reasonable prices and good quality. One of them is Popup Parade, which is the white label from Good Smile Company. These figures have prices around 25€ each, so they are super affordable.

If you like figures, you will find absolute bargains in used market, I believe that's what most people I know buy. Some second hand places have 1/6, 1/7 1/8 figures starting from 500yen, like 3€, and it does not matter what anime it is nor the character or the producer. Some figures have high prices because they were limited at the time they were released, but perhaps a figure that was launched for 20000yen, about 110€, you can find it for 30-40€, and those are the most expensive ones. I am not so into figures, but it's nice to see you can buy very nice and big ones for 10-15€ each, and 95% of the time they are completely boxed and in pristine condition, because when you sell a figure unboxed in Japan these kind of stores give you the lowest price possible and sometimes sell them as junk if it has a little dust.

Many people told me Japan is not a country to live bringing negative aspects of their culture and comparing them with their personality, but when they do that means they do not really understand you. If else, the first time I arrived to Japan I felt so at ease that I forgot completely about my country. Of course they have downsides, every country in the world have them, but you need to experience it to feel it. When something does "click" in your brain and you feel you can finally stop being irritated and relax, that's when you start noticing something was not right before. I have sleep issues and it takes a lot of time for me to sleep due to stress, or that is what the doctor told me. In Japan that disappeared completely and I couldn't believe it.

You can go as a tourist the first time, but if you're 30 or less, I really recommend you to do a working holiday VISA. You will be able to live and work in Japan for a year and have a clear idea if you want to spend the rest of your life in there :)
