So for many years now I've been noticing a trend in remasters. They used to call them "Definitive", "Enhanced" or "Remastered", and they sometimes still do.

Now I don't know what game started it, but what a lot of them do now is have some thematic name for the remaster. It's just good branding, really, but I find it a bit cheeky. I bet they all think they're geniuses.

I'll give you a few examples:
  • Pac-Man World Re-Pac
  • Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp
  • Spyro: ReIgnited Trilogy
  • Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy
  • Crash Tem Racing Nitro-Fueled!
  • Warcraft III: Reforged
  • Diablo II: Resurrected
  • Katamari Damacy REROLL
  • Powerslave ExHumed
  • Overcooked 2! Gourmet Edition
  • Catherine: Full Body
  • Kingdom Hearts Integrum Masterpiece (lol)
  • Blood: Fresh Supply
  • Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania
  • Strife: Veteran Edition
  • Saints Row IV: Re-Elected
  • Clock Tower: Rewind
  • Epic Mickey Rebrushed
  • Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition
  • Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion
  • Dragon Quest VII: ReImagined
  • Haunted Castle Revisited
  • Destroy All Humans! 2 Reprobed
Do you have any more examples? I'm a sucker for those.

Does Ray'z Arcade Chronology count?
The Ray series is such a mess as far as international game titles go (titles outside of Japan include such gems as Gunlock, Layer Section and Galactic Attack) that when they wanted to release a remastered collection they just said fuck it.

The only other one I can think of right now would be the Cowabunga Collection of TMNT games.

Persona 3 Reload was a fun title, since in that game you use magic wands that happen to look like guns to shoot yourself in the head in order to summon the personas.

I really wanted the Persona 4 remake the be called Rerun instead of Revival, since it has a TV theme, but Revival works as well, just not as fun.

I salute the creativity of some of the naming but I've grown a bit tired of hearing "old IP re-something" when they could make new sequels.

They used to make sequels that were basically remasters anyway. Like how Super Castlevania IV is basically a remake of 1 but with improved gameplay and tech. Nobody would complain if they just gave us more of the same with improvements.

Only one from recent memory that comes to mind I haven’t seen mentioned is Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP.

Also idk why, but seeing Rad Spencer like that made me think of that one stock image of psychicpebbles/Zach Hadel lol

A ton of games on the SNES were called "Super" for some reason.

Pac-Man World Re-Pac (1 and 2), Spyro Reignited, Crash N.Sane Trilogies and DQ VII Reimagined are definitely remakes, not remasters. Everything else checks out.

Other plain example I can think of is the recent FF Tactics: Ivalice Chronicles. Klonoa Phantasy Reverie is considered a collection of remasters, but...uh, the first game was from PS1...idk anymore guys.

These are other remakes as well lol. All rebuilt from scratch.

Okay. This thread is just about different versions of the ”re” suffix.

Persona 4 Revival (still think Atlus fumbled by not calling it Persona 4 Replay)

In actuality this trend’s existed for a while, more devs just go with Remake or Remaster probably because it’s simpler. An example off the top of my head is Super Mario All Stars (and 3D All Stars). They could’ve just called them Remastered Collections.

Also I don’t think Reimagined really belongs here, that’s just an alternate way of calling it a Remaster

There’s also Mortal Kombat 1, the Yakuza Kiwami games, and the Mega Man Legacy Collections to add to the pile of unique names.

Oh, right, SMT 3 HD Remaster is...a remaster alright. With dubious quality as we know. Everything re-done with Unity but it has the full skeleton from the PS2 classic.
Then there is Raidou "remaster" that is basically a remake, but Atlus wants us to believe it's a remaster.

Okay. This thread is just about different versions of the ”re” suffix.

The MGS3 remake is called Delta because it stands for "change without difference in structure" for some reason.

It’s not an accurate replacement for the number 3 as Delta is the fourth roman numeral, so this has led fans into thinking that they’re gonna make more MGS remakes but calling them all Delta followed by their subtitles which will be super confusing until they eventually decide to remake more games.

I almost always prefer the originals. So many remasters ruin the look of the original games. They're also done by less experience teams than the original teams and that often means they're actually less polished and introduce more tech issues. For example, the remaster of Bioshock 2 on Xbox and PS still likes to crash to this day.

Many times it feels like a cheap imitation of the original with better graphics being the only improvement. The controls and physics often feel worse with the new Unreal Engine remakes of old games. (I'm looking at your Tomb Raider and Super Monkey Ball) I had to rage quit and play the originals instead.

@Tonberry : Reberried

There’s also Mortal Kombat 1

I bursted out laughing when they announced it. It's such a stupid title. National Lampoon did that as a joke when they parodied Lethal Weapon:

s-l1600.webp

Oddworld : New 'n' Tasty
Metal Gear Solid 2 : Substance
Metal Gear Solid 3 : Subsistence
Darksiders II : Deathinitive Edition
Dragon's Dogma : Dark Arisen - honorable mention to this one since for a good amount of time I thought that DD : Dark Arisen was a sequel to Dragon's Dogma ::sailor-embarrassed.

Those were some examples I could immediately think of.

Yeah, I could actually do without the stupid puns personally. It's really dumb and I generally hate anything once it becomes a trend and everyone starts copying it

I like things simple. The Crash Bandicoot Collection. The Spyro Collection. I don't need the silly names. This works for me:

Simple. Classy. Chef's Kiss.
