my computer is asking me to make a major update

My computer has started telling me that support for windows 10 is ending soon, and that my current computer is not compatible with windows 11. Is that something I should be concerned about? Like, am I going to wake up one day and find that my computer is bricked or something?

In case you can't tell, I'm not very tech savvy ::sailor-embarrassed
It's okay, I still use Windows 2000, XP, 7 and 10 which no problemo whatsoevero lol.

If your PC is bricked oh well you can always buy a new one which is what all you can do if you don't know much about tech, or learn about these stuff and revive your PC when its bricked at some degree and get really good and hack the hacker who attempted to hack you so hard they stop hacking for good and start to work at McDonald's because their ego is that broken lolol.

If its the latest windows 11 update and you use an SSD. Do not try to move files over 50gb ☠️
Seriously, installing a game could brick your drives boot sector/record making it inaccessible.
That's actually absurd. Then again, I can't say I'm surprised with Microsoft shipping updates with bugs like these in the current year.

Meanwhile on Linux I don't have to restart to update my PC. ::winkfelix
Had to restart mine earlier to finalise some Nvidia driver update. Then again, might just be the distro I'm running or lack of knowledge of whatever commands to use.

Forced unclear updates, Immense updates that hang your computer. Man, what mess of an OS... My computer ins my enemy, I guess.
I'm happy that Linux have manual updating by default and is quite clear on what the update does.

I use Treesize to calculate the changes in folder sizes. Saves dozens of wasted GBs

Now would be THE perfect time to switch to Linux and leave Windows in your rear view mirror my friend. I switched about 18 months ago and I'm much happier with it. Is it perfect? Of course it isn't...but I can tell you right now I've had FAR less computer trouble since I switched...

This is likely an update from Windows 11 23H2 to 24H2 (major revision). Generally not something I've encountered issues with. It mostly introduces more integrated features etc (whether you want them or not), but 23H2 will eventually stop getting security updates as well.

You don't have to restart, but it is extremely highly recommended that you do after doing system updates. At the very least I never had a system update on Linux that took longer than 5 mins even after a fresh install off an ISO.

I try to stay at windows 10 and avoid all updates.
Sorry MS but ...

Just update it, what is the worse that could happen?

Before any (mandatory) update, make 2 RestorePoints for anything goes wrong, you can recover.
And if possible avoid updates if not broken, dont fix it.

Microsoft and its updates a bug here, a bug there and we always have to deal with it.

Not always the best advice when there are security vulnerabilities being patched, but fine if it's a machine dedicated to just games etc.

With everyday that passes, Linux just comes closer...
Only roadblock for me at this point is full support for my peripherals to be honest.
