To you who have played these, which ones would you recommend as must-play titles, if any?

I’m not very well-versed in Musou games but I’d like to have at least one on my Vita to get into, but I don’t feel like trying out every single one, and would rather hear honest opinions on them by people experienced with the series.
I’ve been eyeing the one called Samurai Warriors 4 Empires (I think) as the strategy element sounded kind of interesting, instead of just nonstop fighting, but idk if it’s a good addition or not.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Also feel free to talk about the licensed games like One Piece, etc, not against trying them out as well.

If you already feel attracted by the strategy side, just go with that one; on the opposite, I didn't like that so I went with 4. "Warriors Orochi" is a spinoff that put together heroes from Samurai (Japan) and Dynasty (China) titles, but I think they are all "just battles". I believe you have already picked the best choice for you!

p.s. I also think here in the repo you don't find them all (Warriors Vita titles), so if you have a modded console look for them in the pkgi (or just look for them physical or digital)

Might be a stupid question, but does 4 Empires have a ”story/campaign” mode? I’m a little confused whether it’s the fourth game with strategy stuff included or if it’s its own kinda thing entirely.
All these names and subtitles kind of blend together a bit when you’re not a sworn-in fan ::sailor-embarrassed

Orochi 3 probably one of the best, especially if you already familiar with dw/sw games
Both SW4 and SW4 empires is great
DW8 XL and DW8 empires also great
SW4-2 is okay if you really like SW4 its worth to check out
All starts also okay and it got english fan patch, its mostly for people who interested in other Koei Tecmo characters and want to see them interact
Dynasty warriors Next is not bad too and some sort of frankenstein version of DW7

As for the psp
There is so many psp musou games but most of them not localized and only few got fan patches
Most of them seems alright just weaker version of original console games
The only ones i don't recommend is Dynasty Warriors vol 1 and 2, those are just terrible and unfun versions of dw4 and 5
Unlike Samurai Warriors state of war, with is basically sw1 but it actually very good and even has different story from original

When I tried it, i think I saw something as a story/campaign mode, but I don't remember if you choose a kingdom or you create a character, sorry.

Differences between Samurai 4 and 4-2: "4-2" focuses more on minor characters, 4 follows the "classic" stories (but if you look for 4 and 4-2 differences" on google you will find many posts about that). And they are non-stop fighting, as you have described them.

For what I understood, the "Empires" word is for those titles with the strategy element, regardless if they are Samurai or Dynasty. I don't think they are sequels because of the numbers: in "Chronicles" 3ds I found the Nobunaga story told exactly like in 4 for Vita, just with better gameplay and more enemies on screen.

In any case, you can't go wrong with any choice: I blindly started with "Chronicles" on 3ds without knowing anything about Warriors series and totally enjoyed it, after that I got Orochi 2 on psp, put lots of hours on it, and then played Nobunaga story (my favourite) on 4 for Vita.

Also; since you want to know about the "licensed" game, I played "Neptunia U" on Vita, it plays more or less like a musou title but with Neptunia characters and monsters and a bit of fanservice.

Thanks alot for this explanation, I’ll keep this in mind as I research a bit more!

I do love the first 2 Warriors Orochi (well, I haven't been able to play any later ones, so...)

Though I wouldn't recommend the first Warriors Orochi on PSP, the draw distance is low and there are no voices in game.
Actually, WO2 also has a pretty pathetic visual depth on the PSP, sadly.
Thankfully, the PS2 versions have much better depth, 60fps, and (for me, important) WO1 has an undub version available ::fire

So @Tonberry, if you want to play the first 2 Warriors Orochi, maybe you can emulate PS2 on your Vita? ::cirnoshrug
The PSP version of WO2 has more "stuff" though... more Dream mode stages and a few more characters.

Uh...the Vita really can't emulate the PS2 as have been said on other sites like Reddit.

It can emulate up to Dreamcast (through Flycast) and NDS (through DSVita and it had a recent update too) but anything beyond can't do unless the PS2 versions of those two games gets their PC recomp. or decomp. treatment and get themselves ported to the Vita.

Otherwise for now at least if they're into the PS2 versions, Tonberry will have to go with PCSX2 on PC or some of those Android-based PS2 emulators.

Definitely should’ve pinged me, I know these better than the back of my hand.

Warriors Orochi 1 has the best storyline out of the psp ones but it’s held back by having a ton of cut voices lines.
2 on the other hand doesn’t have this issue but the story is a little weaker due to it being a glorified expansion, requiring you to play 1 first.

Warriors Orochi 3 (musou Orochi 2 in Japan cuz reasons) is the best of the bunch but comes with the disadvantage of being stuck in Japanese cuz the game has already been localized so you won’t know what happens in (what I personally think) is the best story of the franchise. The game is on steam though and It’s worth getting, it’s a true masterpiece. (Also the English patch you’ll find is for weapons and menus, so you can absolutely beat it without trouble)

Dynasty Warriors 7 is in a similar position as above, already localized but has a decent psp port and I believe it has a similar English patch that translates menus.

Same with dynasty Warriors 6 although unlike 7 and WO3, you cannot buy DW6 on steam, so you’ll need to settle for emulation.

Samurai Warriors 4 is fantastic and is basically the full package. SW4-II however is a glorified expansion and absolutely not worth buying, but is totally worth pirating it cuz it’s just an expansion.

Spirit of Sanada is good gameplay wise but is absolutely fantastic.

That about covers everything I have to say. To avoid redundancy, I’ve dodged commenting on games mentioned by others as I don’t have a lot to add so I analyzed the games where I felt I had something meaningful to say.

Musous are in my top three gaming series alongside GTA and Yakuza, so I have more than a few words to share about each individual game and would be thrilled to see you have fun in it. Looking forward to our future exchanges so do feel free to drop me a word about it any minute Wizard-man!

Oh yeah I remember you talking about Musou in the past. Thanks for the great write-up!

Cool thread man! I played a bit of Dynasty Warriors on PSP and loved it, but I ended up neglecting it. This is a great reminder to dive back in.

About the originals Dynasty warriors for PSP ("Vol.1" and Vol.2) they are more strategy games where you need to move around maps for turns. The strategy part comes when enemies start to ambush you and you need to get back or defeat the main forces, so unlike the normal warrios games you actually need to think more

That said, ignore the first one since it doesnt have a map that tells your where your enemies are. Vol.2 and State of War are way better if you want a Warriors game with more strategy in the mix

I need to get more into this genre in general. If I go with Dynasty Warriors I’ll definitely keep that in mind. Thanks ::bigboss

They have their charm, also Warriors Orochi 2 is one of the best examples when a port is done in a great way

There is also Warriors Orochi Z, a version of the two first Warriors Orochi games in one that as far as i know never got outside of japan (and the pc version is kinda hard to get)

Is better to play the original WO in ps2, WO 2 on PSP and 3 just go for ultimate unless for some reason want to see the changes from the original 3 to ultimate

This might be slightly unrelated but I am curious... I've always seen the Musou games n stuff... and I really only like the Nintendo Warriors games like Hyrule and Fire Emblem Warriors/Musou.

Are these games indicative of how the mainline Musou games are or no? Cuz I might try one on PSP if that's the case.
