I’m looking for specific type of rare games for SNES, or possibly other 4th gen consoles easy to emulate.

Criteria are the following:
- Supports exactly three playes (utilizing multitap), not only 2 or all 4. It could be 3P+ if other players might be NPC or AI controlled.
- It could be hacks which enhance original game with multiplayer capability.
- Has classic RPG elements, like some storyline decisions or quests, levelling up one way or another, you know it.
- It does not matter if gameplay is simultaneous, split screen or turn based, 3P in battles counts too.
- Cooperative is the best, but competitive might go to.
- Action, adventure, strategy, even board games will fit, but it must be sort of RPG.
- Japanese games with English patches are most welcome.

At the moment, what we have played:
- Lord of The Rings Vol. I
- Secret of Mana
- Seiken Densetsu 3P hack
- Dokapon 3-2-1 (hidden gem! absolute blast)

Currently playing awesome hack for Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
Plan to try Chrono Trigger hack made by the same author.
Also Crystal Bean from Dungeon Explorer looks promising.

Dear RGT community, do you have anything else on your mind to suggest please?

A game I'm familiar with that should fit your criteria is Blaze & Blade, for the PS1.

It's an action rpg with local multiplayer, up to four players.
There's a sequel too, but that one never came out of Japan, and as far as I know, there's no fan translation for that yet.

Over the years I've played a lot of co-op games with a friend, but most I believe were two players at most, having only one actual good friend, mh.

Your best bet for finding more old local co-op games and the like would be to check this site here:
There might be some games I'm not aware of myself.

The Japanese game "Crystal Beans from Dungeon Explorer" is the only one I can think of that allowed a max of 3 players sadly. The rest of the SNES games that supported multi-tap allowed up to 4 usually. Anything else, you'd probably need to look at arcade games like Battletoads.

Final Fantasy 9 has a multi controller option tucked away in the options, me and a buddy used it to play through together

There is a 2P hack for Secret of Evermore where the 2nd player controls the dog. Unfortunately there weren't many multiplayer RPGs that came out around this time. There are a couple modern Indie games that does this. Pen and Paper Rpg series is kinda like D&D that allows each player to control a character. More friends, mean more fun.

Gauntlet would also work. IV for genesis and Legends for psx and n64 is rpgish with multiplayer. Though I don't know if there is a working n64 emulator that plays it.

Thanks a lot for all your suggestions!

Just to clarify, all games four players and more are welcome, as long as only 3 humans could play.

Blaze & Blade seems a very good fit, I’ve heard of it before. We will try it after securing all possible SNES titles and hacks.

“Crystal Beans” are already in the list, looking forward to play it.

I have been looking through co-optimus website, but I believe many more games (which could be not exactly coop) might be missing from their database. And they don’t count all existing hacks.

I’ve searched a bit which FF games actually have multiplayer and never seen FF9 mentioned… Not sure it supports 3rd controller via PS Multitap, but I’ll give it a try.
Thanks for the hint.

Secret of Evermore is really cool with gameplay very similar to Secret of Mana, but different setting. I have saved it just in case.
Too bad it’s only 2 characters controllable even with the hack.

We have played couple of times Gauntlet II on NES, quite fun though lacks some plot.
I have checked some youtube and thought that the psx game only allows 2P. Not sure about other consoles, might give them a try.

Currently focusing on exploring video games legacy, but maybe after that we could switch to the tabletop D&D or Warhammer.
