Over the weekend, I went to see the new Superman movie with my family. Well, it turns out the only available showing was the 4DX one and it was 5 dollars extra each. My parents didn't want to wait so we sucked it up. How bad could it be? Well it turns out that 4DX is like a medieval torture device. Whenever the movie stars getting interesting, your seat starts jumping and turning and tries to eject you. Then cold air and water is splashed in your face while you are trying to focus on the film. If you are trying to eat popcorn it flies in your face. Who the fuck pays for this shit? lol. Seriously. If you enjoy 4DX please try to explain the appeal of it, because I don't get it.

4DX movies aim to enhance the cinematic experience by engaging more than just sight and sound, using motion seats and environmental effects like wind, water, and scents to immerse viewers. While some find it a fun, innovative way to watch movies, others consider it a gimmick or a distraction. Ultimately, whether 4DX enhances the experience or detracts from it depends on individual preferences.

The only valid reason for me to use 4DX was to watch the F1 movie. Watching one of the trailers the director mentioned he incorporated feeling the curbs during the race scenes and that peaked my interest because it would be like experiencing something similar to a racing sim rig with the seat moving with the physics of the car. After seeing the movie it was definitely pretty cool but it was over dramatic at times like when they closed a door and you can feel your whole seat shake like c'mon now... But the best part was a certain scene in the movie where Brad Pitt is hitting every corner (Apex) perfectly as he turns and the seat was also moving very smoothly and in sync with the car so it felt crazy immersive. That was my only justification for watching that movie in theatres specifically for that experience. There are also certain days when tickets are cheaper like on Tuesdays at my theatres so I was able to get a discount on the already pricey tag so that was nice! <3

The only reason I know 4dx exists is because 2 of the hosts on a podcast I adore (Hey Riddle Riddle) love to go see every Fast and Furious movie in 4dx.

Which, based on all the descriptions I hear, is the perfect type of dumb fun to enhance with more dumb fun.

actually i wouldn't mind a cold splash of water in this heat.

I watched all three Lord of the Rings movies in 4DX. Extended editions too. It was cool at first, but being shaken and prodded for up to 5 hours was just too much

Wow excuse mon French but WTF is that BS? Did they really expect people to enjoy "4-dimensional movie experience" BS ideas they come up with? lol

Imagine watching Jackie Chan movies and a guy punches and kicks you in places Jackie gets hit. Future of cinema!!!! So immersive. "I feel like I'm in the movie!!!" lol.

Dude seriously I don't know why they fucking up entertainment industry in general and turn into masochist BS. I can't imagine playing new games like Uncharted or IDK Astro Bot without feeling like I'm being tortured. Already new tv series and movies are so empty I've lost interest and shaking my seat and throwing water balloon on my face won't make the movie better lol. I felt the same about 3D movies, I mean you watch the movie with special glasses so it looks 3D. Different idea but useless nevertheless.

I didn't even know that was a thing, but your experience reminds me a lot of my dealings with "enhanced" 3D (not the blue-and-red kind -- that one's awesome!).

At some point, that's too much immersion for my liking. I mean... The whole point of a movie is that you know what's happening on screen isn't actually happening, so you can actually enjoy it without a second thought.

Whether cinema really has a future is questionable. Of course they try to keep themselves alive with some ideas.

TBH it's already enough satisfaction to watch a movie on a giant flat screen and sounds blasting while you watch the movie with friends. Better than an ordinary home experience. I don't need 4th dimensional experience thank you, not even 3D lol.

However I do something else for decent immersion. For example reading Lord of the Rings books and characters taking a long journey so every time they camp and eat bread I would eat bread too. I also like to eat bacon and fried eggs when I watch a particular scene in Howl's Moving Castle when characters eat it. IMO this is a better immersion idea then "my seat launched out of the cinema!!!" lol.

@Strategist lmao thanks for the laugh of the day. Sounds like you're trying to focus on the movie but the theater is doing everything in it's power to distract you haha. I can totally picture some guy echoing "God damn it!" from somewhere in the theater randomly. Cold air & water? Never knew about that.

Dang, I thought they had 4DX everywhere. Guess not. I feel special or something. This is the ad for it in my movie theater. It is relatively new. Apparently it has smells too. I definitively do not want to smell my movies, lol.

I don't even know what language is this but thanks to my English knowledge I can understand it. Weirddd but not weird as much as these bloody seats that can shake your world and spam fart smell lol.

Spy Kids 3D and Avatar were the only good 3D movies in my experience

I have never heard of this, that's pretty wild and also miserable sounding. Why would anyone want this? 3D was kind of a silly fad for 90% of movies, but at least that wasn't spraying water on your face.

Cold have been worse I guess; it could have been a screening of Carrie.
