So, Sony has this sad trend of having a really good series that only lasts a console generation before the studio making it either
A) Runs out of ideas and abandons it like an unwanted infant
Or
B) Dies

MotorStorm on the PS3 is the latter.

One of the early pack in variants for PS3 was MotorStorm, and indeed, it was one of the few games in the early days of the system to turn some heads. Not many, admittedly, but MotorStorm uses the PS3’s architecture to fantastic use. The system is CPU heavy, focused on lots of advanced calculations. While the game runs at 30, it’s a generally smooth 30 with a solid gameplay formula, that being a motor tournament. You can choose bikes, buggies, ATV’s, cars, and trucks, and each vehicle handles the terrain differently. It gets really crazy when multiple TYPES of vehicles are in play, all racing on the same track, taking vehicle dependent shortcuts, and destroying each other! Oh yes, MotorStorm uses the PS3’s CPU’s to create a remarkably robust damage system that not only looks cool but comes into gameplay as well! It also has a risk and reward boost feature with an overheat.

The game is simple, possibly to the point that it damaged the game’s reception back when it first released, but all this time later the gameplay loop has held up very well!

I haven’t gotten to them since I haven’t found copies where I live, but it got two sequels before the end of the PS3’s life, both of which are even better than the original (Apocalypse perhaps to varying degrees…), and it got a fantastic PSP entry that is everything I could have hoped for!

And then, like all good games that Sony has their mitts on, it died. The studio went under. No more MotorStorm.

The missed potential of bringing it to VR like they did with Wipeout is palpable. (We should really make a Wipeout thread too!)
