Phantasy star 4 the story and combat drew me in also moved me to play other RPGs.Alundra also was another moving story. Both have a special place in my heart always. When alias died I almost cried my eyes out.

- Chrono Trigger : First one I played, had no idea what an RPG was, no idea the genre existed, I bought it because it has Toriyama's art on it. I thought it was a Zelda game when I started playing, then had no idea what the heck was going on on my first battle.
Game was in japanese but thankfully I had a magazine with a walkthrought / guide of the game.

Then I wanted to play more RPGs, which led to

- Breath of Fire 2 : not as good looking as chrono, I was wondering "where are the cool looking techniques ??", but I still absolutely loved it.
Managing your village was super fun.

- FF6

- FF7

- Wild Arms 4 : absolutely love the cast, especially Raquel, the combat system (even though it's not super well executed), and even though it doesn't have the "grandiose" feel of most RPGs, it was really a great adventure.
Gotta play Wild Arms 5

- Shadow Hearts : horror style RPG. The first of a great series.

- Dragon Quest 8 : First DQ I played, still my favorite. I loved that a modern (back then :p ) RPG has such simples mechanics and story but was super engaging. I love the cast.

- Radiant Historia : RPG with some kind of time travel element and puzze like combat. In my top 5 RPGs of all time.

I'm probably be like "oh sh.t I forgot about that one, how could I ??" in a couple minutes.

Dragon Quest V is something everybody should play in every single lifetime. It's just that good and valuable.

I'm not listing every single noteworthy JRPG because it'd take me an hour
Xenogears and Mother 3 are easily some of the most emotional games I've ever played.

The most memorable RPGs for me are from that 1995-2005 era of PC gaming where small developers were really just out there taking risks and not caring if they garnered any mainstream appeal. They were basically making RPGs for themselves to tell stories that were personal to them, or promoted something about their heritage or culture, or were just fever dreams run rampant.

I remember these fondly because they completely deviated from a lot of the standard formulas, not just moving away from what was "normal" for the time, but in general. Today, they're referred to as abandonware, but if they were released now, they'd be considered indie cult classics.

Here's a list of the ones that stick out in my mind:
  • Mistmare
  • Another War
  • Shadow Vault
  • Vampire Hunters
  • Archangel
  • Dragonfire: The Well of Souls
  • Anito- Defend a Land Enraged
  • World of Chaos
  • Paradise Cracked
  • Dark Secrets of Africa
  • Morning's Wrath
  • Blind Justice
  • Icarus, Sanctuary of the Gods
  • MetalHeart: Replicant's Rampage
  • Gorasul: Legacy of the Dragon

They helped build a foundation for a movement.

Good to see some Phantasy Star 3 love.
That game is truly underrated, although at the time, it was a kinda WTF after playing Phantasy Star II and then the B- Team Sequel. Lots of replayability though, and the gameplay loop is a step up from II.

Also, right at the beginning, sell your shit and buy an escape pipe to use in the dungeon. ;)

Grandia 3 story line and combat system are great, pulls you in. The opening grabs you right off.

Playing PSO on SCHThack is literally the most fun I've had gaming online.

i mostly played pso in local co-op. the servers had shut down by the time that i had gotten an internet connection. my friend that i played with was level 106. he gave me a level 200 mag when i started.

Dude, it is phucking Kold out there, with a Phantasy Star Ph and a Mortal Kombat K.
i know, i'm in Florida, we don't get cold weather too often, but a Florida man isn't built for chilly weather. 50 degree weather feels like one step above freezing.
