Everyone loves a good villain, right? Or at least loves to hate them. I'm curious who you all personally consider to be the most despicable of the bunch. Could be based off actions, attitude, anything!

The little shit that made me think of this idea for a thread is none other than Argath Thadalfus (Algus Sadalfas) from Final Fantasy Tactics. He seems like a decent enough fella at the start, joining Ramza and Delita and seemingly becoming a reliable ally for them. It doesn't take long for his true nature to rear it's ugly head. His dialogue with Milleuda during the first fight with her reveals his utter disdain for anyone not born a noble and it only gets worse when he shit talks Delita after his sister, Tietra, was kidnapped. He gets a much deserved punch in the face and Ramza tells him to sod off. It all comes to a head at Ziekden Fortress, where Argath (on Zalbaag's order, to be fair) fatally shoots Tietra with a crossbow to get to her kidnapper. The final battle of Chapter 1 ensues and Argath is taken out.

Argath is barely even a pawn in the grand scheme of things and isn't in the story for long, but he's a despicable little shit for half the time he is. He probably wouldn't be as hated as he is if he didn't spend a good chunk of time being your ally before doing a 180 into pricksville. It's a testament to the writers for making such a piece of shit in such a short amount of time. He's also almost sympathetic, coming from a disgraced noble family due to cowardice from his grandfather. He just wants to restore his family's honor, but does it in the most boot licking little shit way. I'd say he's my most hated villain in the Final Fantasy series and I can't actually think of anyone I hate more in any other video game at the moment. He's just excellent proof that villains can be so much more interesting when their motivations are beyond "Hey I'm gonna destroy the world for reasons!"

Just look at his selfish, arrogant little shrimp face. Ugh.

Anyway, I'd love to hear some other thoughts! :D

I have a massive hate boner for I-No from Guilty Gear series.
I-No.jpeg

I don't know if i would try to save the world and defeat her or become her personal slave. She certainly did so many messed up disturbing stuff, i can understand people who despise her.

Also, "You have outlived your usefulness" Colonel himself:
Colonel.jpg

He almost never appears, but always manages to make me hate him so goddamn much, even more because how similar to so many real life people he acts, i hate manipulative all-powerful jerks in media

Never got really angry at it. It's not like it has any real understanding of what it does, just tries to simulate it, it's just a broken bugged machine that is too absurdly powerful. I think it's existence is more humanity fault than anything. The whole story feels more like mankind playing "fuck around and find out" and finally finding out very hard(we might be next beware!!!!)

Yeah that's right, I for some reason still feels kinda bad for this thing despite what AM have done

One that comes to mind is the main bad guy from the Zone of the Enders series, Nohman (Ridley Hardman).

While he didn't outright become a villain out of his own volition (much like I believe Sephiroth to also have been a victim of happenstance), Nohman, nevertheless, becomes increasingly insane, destructive and nihilistic as the series progresses.

Emperor Mateus from Final Fantasy II is so despicable that it is honestly hilarious.

1738646824733.png

During the course of the game, he tries to conquer the world but mostly just destroys every city he comes across, he builds a super weapon called The Dreadnought which he continues to destroy cities with, kidnaps the princess leading the resistance and makes her the prize of a battle tournament simply because he could, and he finally summons a large cyclone to continue to destroy the world until he finally dies.

He is also implied to have killed a ton of wyverns, his mother, and thousands of his own people. He also brainwashes people into his servitude.

But that's not all for the world's most despicable man. Apparently when his soul went to Hell, he managed to beat Satan in a fight because his heart was just that evil. He then returns to the world to, you guessed it, destroy everything.

Even more absurd, the added content in the GBA release reveals that another half of his soul was sent to Heaven. Even though this part of him was good he still conquered Heaven and killed God.

1738647377225.png

No matter what, he is just evil. Despicable at every turn. His goals are only destruction and conquest. 10/10, all those other Final Fantasy villains like Sephiroth or Ardyn Izunia wish they had as good of writing as The Emperor.

So... let's see...
after we just solved the existential threat of a maverick virus...
You IMMEDIATELY steal the cure for it, twist it into a control program to rob what is now essentially a sentient race of their free will, create a deadly weapon out of a legendary hero's body, start a second massive war that wipes out 90% of said race and half of all human, and get banished to space.

and what lesson do you learn from all this? that clearly humans are evil for judging you too harshly! so you come back to seize the final human settlement that exists. and when the humans try to flee? you try to destroy nature... like... all that is left of plant life and fertile land outside of the settlement. this is all just to keep them from escaping the living hell you plan to keep them in.

and after all that... you can't even die properly, as the space station you fused with becomes a weird nanotech that still SOMEHOW contains your hatred 200 years later, and get's turned into a giant fortress by an equally evil scientist.

DIE PIG!!!!!
Good choice! Luca Blight was one of the first people to come to mind when I made this topic. To say he's an irredeemable bastard is not even close to getting across how much of a monster he is. x) The only molecule of decency he has is how he treats Jillia. The boss fight(s) against him are my favorite in the series. They're pretty easy if you know to prepare for them, but my first time through I got spanked pretty hard, just barely eking out a victory. But when you know what you're in for, he stands no chance...

Another one came to mind. Huey motherfucking Emmerich from Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker & 5. If you know, you know. He seemed like a decent enough guy in Peace Walker, but it would take a fucking essay to explain how much of a piece of shit he became in 5. In short, he betrayed basically everyone, is a murderer, sells out his allies for personal gain and he never once owns up to his mistakes, claiming his innocence and blaming everyone else for what would eventually become his downfall. Luckily for him he was saved from execution by nature of the game being a prequel and would eventually die like a bitch from drowning in a swimming pool. Too bad it didn't happen sooner. Good thing Otacon turned out to be a good person despite having trash as a father.

This bitch fed the souls of two children to a demonic sword

Not just killed them

Fed their souls to it after sneaking into their room

Most fucked up ending ever

I'd still hit it
i've played soul calibur 3, 4, and 5. i've read the bios for the characters.
what she actually did is arguably much worse.
she kidnaps sophitia's daughter, causing her to turn evil for the forth game; infects her daughter with the soul edge's evil. sophitia has a shard of soul edge logged inside of her next to her heart. [don't remember how that happens, but it did]. to save her child, sophitia has the shard removed, killing her.
that covers 3 and 4.
17 years later, 5 happens. yuri lowenthal hunts down people tained by soul edge, eventually leading him to his missing sister, who was abducted by tira again. yuri hates her, knockoff sophitia didn't do anything to deserve that, they fight, then the soul calibur creates its own counter part to nightmare, spohitia in her scrapped design for the game. you fight her, and then credits roll.
then, somehow, sophitia uses force powers to contact her past version and tell her to fight to change destiny or the future will refuse to change, which is the starting point for 6.
tira causes time and space to create time travel, to undo the bullshit and terribleness of soul calibur 5.
as long as tira looks like she does in 3, i would still bang her too.

Man, I just liked hitting people with swords. I didn't know the plot went that off the rails.

yeah, he is pure evil to the core. bad to the bone, one might say.
he followed his dreams and succeeded; even if just for a moment.
kind of inspirational, in a weird way.
anyone can succeed, if you try hard enough.

oh yeah, it is crazy. you know Raphael?
he became nightmare.
ivy is supposed to be a motherly figure to the knockoff bootleg characters introduced in the game.
viola is amy.
the only new character introduced that people liked was the dude with the werewolf spirit.
yuri was trained by setsuka. she either sucks as a mentor, or she trained him wrong on purpose going by his fighting stance.
75% of the game's planned content was cut, which explains why the game is so lackluster.

I'd be remise if I didn't mention persona 5 and it's uncomfortably familiar villians...
A guy who uses his authority and fame to get a little too close to high schoolers
a guy who steals art and passes it off as his own
a con artist and thug who blackmails people into giving him obscene amounts of money
the manifestation of a young woman's trauma and depression caused by abuse from her relatives and government agents
a wealthy CEO who views his employees as disposable trash
a corrupt police detective willing to break the rules for her case
and an evil politician who sink the country if he could be king of the wasteland
and the literal indifference of the masses in the face of all this evil

Gee willikers! I knew 5 had some troubles, but I didn't know they ran that deep. Those are some... interesting advancements in the plot as well. Soulcalibur 5 really was the biggest damp squib of the series. I played the hell out of all the prior games, but 5 just never caught my attention. I've been enjoying 6 a lot though. I will not complain about soft rebooting the series, but I will complain about them not including Aeon in 6. Boooo.

Yeah, Kamoshida also came to mind when I first thought about this topic. The rest of them are scum, don't get me wrong (well Futaba and Sae are good people who just went down a dark path), but Kamoshida is the worst of the bunch. Shido was way worse in every respect, but something about Kamoshida just makes me hate him even more. I guess because a disgusting creep who uses his status as a former Olympian athlete to basically give him free reign to do whatever he wants. That's a way too common thing in American schools from what I've heard and I wouldn't doubt it's a problem in Japan as well, if not everywhere. Granted, Shido has very obvious parallel right now, but I won't get into that. x)

This dickhead. Handsome Jack from Borderlands 2. He strikes a balance of being self-aware and also self-assured that he's in the right despite all the exploitation, murder and destruction he causes. You get a little bit of his twisted logic in Borderlands 2, just enough to make him seem three-dimensional, and there's further backstory in the Pre-Sequel. He taunts you throughout the entire game, although it is often funny, and not overdone. You do occasionally see first-hand the results of his actions, but it's mostly over the voice communicator, as somehow every character in the Borderlands universe knows what you're doing and can contact you at any time. Anyway, he was effective enough that they tried to replicate him with the villains in Borderlands 3, to poor results.

I don't want to spoil Persona 4 for anyone who hasn't played it and might want to, but the main antagonist in that game is a favorite of mine. You get slight hints throughout the game that they are a little off, but you maintain a friendly relationship with them. It's not revealed until near the end of the game what their involvement is with the TV murders. There's something about this character's bitter, dejected outlook that feels realistic. Someone who has convinced themself that they deserve much more than they have, despite not applying themself fully in the present to their work or the people around them. Kind of like Handsome Jack, they are convinced they have been wronged and feel justified in wronging others to get what they want. They don't realize their power at first, accidentally uncovering it before slowly sinking deeper into cruelty and madness. As you encounter them they do get more trope-y and chaotic, I just enjoy the journey there and how the reveal ends up happening.

i knew the emperor was evil but not THAT evil!

SkullFace from Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain... 😡

skullface.png

If this villian wouldn't exist in the game, I'd be still hanging around around and joking with the enemy squad...

This little pizza devil, and his prismatic array of identical bastards like an asshole rainbow, have been thwarting me my whole life. I ha-I HATE them *so* much.

First: this goblin
1000304323.jpg

And Second a personal favorite of mine:
Ardyn from FF XV
1000304326.png

That guy everytime he appears something terrible happens, but his voice actor is so good that you enjoy it. Is also interesting that he is more of a victim, but that up to you to discover 😉

Oh I know, I just simplified it out of lazyness

The sad music really sells it, I loved reading the bios in 3

IIRC Sophitia's shard came from fighting nightmare, thats what caused her children to become suitable hosts for soul edge and how characters like voldo and zasalamel can find her; cause they sense the evil energy

You know all those top 10 evil villains that always have the same characters? I bet if they played more games for once theyd realize she's way more evil than half their list
Even before finding out about soul edge she was an assassin from a secret clan since birth
After it dissolved she would still keep killing anyone who crossed on a whim, thats just what she enjoyed
Once hearing about Nightmare she only thought "finally someone like me"

She's one of the few character Zasalamel will call a monster funnily enough lol

The only other living thing she has fondness to is the crows that follow her

Also when she meets sophitia in Tales of Souls she goes out of her way to taunt her and call her a terrible mother
