so we know that gacha games are one of the biggest money sinks out there, and the games systems are all made super punishing to incentivise spending. i havent played many for this exact reason; but i used to put a lot of time into the brave exvius mobile game and i hit a huge brick wall because of shitty resource spending and i couldnt reverse this at all. what do you guys think? could trying to play these gacha games with no in-game purchases actually unironically be one of the most brutal gaming experiences ever? lolllolol

If by brutal you mean an ungodly timesink that could be better spent doing pretty much anything else then yes.

I remember Brave Exvius. Too bad they didn't make a offline version, like the Kingdom Hearts one and... oh god, Mega Man X Dive. Never spent money on gacha games, didn't care too much about not fully clearing the events or the story.

x dive offline costing as much as it is really aint it, but i didnt know about the kingdom hearts one, sounds pretty cool!!

It really depends on how you approach it, I play 3 gacha games and honestly I just try to do the minimal amount of effort to get dailies done and play patiently, only focusing on advancing on the story if I can; also some games have qol stuff that can help like quick battles that skip generic fights or power saving mode that makes charactesr grind while one is not in game, but in all fairness this leads me to conclude that I would enjoy these games better if they were visual novels with no gameplay lol. My biggest gripe chained with that is the fact that player input won't matter much compared to making a right build for your units which is the grindy part unless you use this secret technique called "credit card" lol.

It really depends on the game. Puzzle and Dragons is fairly generous with free currency so you can pull for new characters, they have monthly and licensed events so you can earn more, and older characters will get evolutions that can make them at least semi-viable, or even really great in a niche role. Plus, they have lots of crossovers so you can have a team that's got like, Hello Kitty and Batman and Tifa or whatever.

Then you've got something like One Piece Treasure Cruise, which is notoriously unfriendly to new players and has become stingier with freebies over time. You might luck out with free pulls since it is RNG, but that doesn't happen often due to crazy low rates. But there was a guy who was making YT videos for each event, showing you how to build a team to clear events 100% with free units. So even in the case of OPTC, I guess it's in how you approach it.

I like to treat them as something to unwind with on a break, or for awhile after work while I'm watching something. The people who turn it into a job where they play 8h a day, it's like... why

It depends. If you're for PVP, and the leaderboards, there's just no way in hell you'll be one of the top, or be the top without sinking alot of ::scrooge-greed into it. As far as completing stages go, well, with mobile games, there are no real endings, and it just keeps going, and going, and going, until the developer/publisher decides to shut down the server.
