Pretty surprised to see that this one didn't exist yet!

Who here plays (or has played) this gem? I used to spend hours upon hours creating random stuff when the game first came out (and my computer was barely able to run it), no quite able to understand how any of it worked.

Since then, I have moved to the PS3 and Android versions, actually creating nice things in those (I had a bit of "Palace Phase" and ended up building a ton of those on the old Prussian style, which was really fun).

What about you? Any creation you would want to share with us?

I have the PC version and have been playing it for literal ages. One of my maps has been active since at least 2014 (though I was playing earlier than this), and has since evolved into a very chaotic place, especially after dabbling in mods.

MC isn't as good as it used to be when notch held the reins of the game.

I miss the Notch era. Minecraft had a huge downgrade after Microsoft bought it so I stopped playing

I've been playing Minecraft with some regularity since... gulp... 2010, I guess? I actually started on a "Classic" server, which they haven't supported for well over a decade, now – it was only building stuff with no monsters or gameplay mechanics or anything, but I still had a ton of fun meeting people. (Oh my god, if anyone out there is from xCraft, please, drop me a line – I loved you guys!) I got the full game in late 2011, right before the 1.8 Adventure Update came out, and I've been adoring it ever since. I genuinely think that, if I had to pick one video game to represent the entire medium, it would be Minecraft.

Me and my friends (both IRL and online) and my siblings had a ton of fun playing together, of course – we'd build castles and mansions and massive underground networks connected by redstone-powered minecart stations – and a fantastic time was had by all. But where the game really shone for me was in its challenge maps, and specifically a little one called Skyblock, which has eaten up more hours than I care to admit over the past decade of my life.

If you've never played it, Skyblock is a challenge map where the entire game world is limited to what you see above. (Well, sort of, the map has a few little secrets for you to discover in that blue void, but that's pretty much it.) Inside that chest is a single ice block, a single bucket containing a single lava block, and a single items' worth of watermelon seeds. Your goal is to create your own world by exploiting the game's systems – you have to learn to survive purely by manipulating the blocks and items in such a way that you can reliably feed yourself, create additional blocks, and build your own living quarters. If you fall off that island carrying a key item, you're fucked, Chuck. I live for challenges like this.

The amount of creativity, experimentation, improvisation, and fun this one map consisting of around 27 blocks has given me and my friends cannot be overstated. In multiplayer, we'd lose our minds at some of the things we'd manage to achieve, and laugh our heads off yelling over every mistake. ("YOU DROPPED THE BUCKET!? HOW DID YOU MANAGE TO DROP THE BUCKET? NOW HOW ARE WE GOING TO BUILD AN INFINITE WATER GENERATOR!?!?!?!") Even in single-player, I'd while hours and hours away at my own private maps – this was my go-to "listening to a podcast" game for many years – and marvel at just how much I could achieve with such limited resources. Skyblock on its own makes Minecraft a top 10 – maybe even top 5 – video game for me.

These days, I play the PS4 version of Minecraft very often, usually in hardcore mode – I really like how "roguelike" it makes the gameplay, and I have a ton accomplishing what I can before a fucking skeleton shoots my head off from a million miles away. They've added so, so much to the game over the years, and I'm always discovering something new and getting obsessed over some crazy mechanic. (Most recently, breeding frogs.) I fully understand people who say the game has gotten way too complicated and bloated, and a lot of mechanics and items are completely dead-end, but I still love Minecraft just as much as I did in my teenhood, and I probably always will.

Notch, you're a fat fedora-wearing Twitter-addicted psycho who built your empire off a stolen game concept, but you're also the greatest indie developer ever, so I guess it balances out.

One last thing: my first time playing the "full" version of Minecraft was on the PC Gamer demo, which I got off a cover disk from the June 2011 issue, which also had a very detailed piece on Minecraft's development. I really loved that demo – it was timed, but the map had loads of neat secrets and little nooks and crannies to explore. I got a ton out of it, and so did my friends and cousins who I shared the disk with. That article was really good, too... man, PC Gamer was a great mag back in the day, and now it's a load of slop like they all are. Great memories, though!

I made complex builds for a while. For a time it felt like digital Lego ( and really, that's what it is), and it's great in that capacity and other creative endeavors, but after a point I just grew tired of it.

I remember playing the free launcher one with the timer, also quite insane how some people manage to beat it under 1 minute

I still play the Java version to relax, i like to build castles and villas but the historian/anthropologist in me gets obsessed with making them historically/culturally accurate, i never got into the insanity of redstone builds.

I currently have a dedicated server running AllTheMods9[No Frills].

We always come back to it and one of our gaming buddies was like, hey we should have a server.

Usually I end up adding way too many food and decorative mods to make cute houses.

I recently decided to go back to one of my most-developed maps, put a whole bunch of TNT crates inside a truck and set them off... I had forgotten how gloriously wrong those blocks behave, bouncing off each other and reaching the top of my largest buildings before blowing up.

It never gets old XD

Is this me or Minecraft has lost something in the last decade? I dunno what.
It's the general aesthetic and feeling of the game. I don't know how conscious Notch was of this but he really got it right. I've seen it described as "vaporwave purgatory". Everything's bright and colorful but also a bit lonely and eerie, it goes on forever and never repeats.
Current Mojang ruined this partially by sanding down the edges to make it more kid friendly (why?) but mostly because they don't seem to have much of a plan for how the game should feel. People complain about the useless animals but if they were styled correctly I don't think polar bears or camels would have really changed the feeling of beta too much. I will not defend all of the squidward variants though.
The terrain is the biggest mistake here. They made it more "realistic" over multiple updates starting with beta 1.8 and it removed a lot of the surreal feeling that people loved.

Tell me about it! Maybe this is just nostalgia, but the Classic Minecraft textures just look beautiful and peaceful to me.

Ooh, baby, those bring back the memories! Maybe it's just because I only experienced those textures in Minecraft Classic, but they have such a sense of quiet serenity to them. I especially love the cobblestone and gravel textures.

There are not words enough to describe how pleased I am that Notch didn't go with those really early character models they were considering. They look like friggin' Funko Pops.

At least, there are people making mods for the old beta and alpha minecraft versions.

Authentic Adventure, and Better than Adventure, are both pretty fun to play.

Oh, also, I forgot to mention, but I also played Minecraft Dungeons all the way through with my brother years and years ago. (I can't even remember when it came out.) It was like a $5 phone game that I paid $30 x 2 for on PC and tablet. Simple to the point of inanity, dreadfully short, terribly easy. Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I started back in 1.4.5. I remember I was really excited to play, so I spent days researching like everything I could on the Minecraft wiki before I got the full game, and I was particularly enthralled with the Wither. It's been a few years since I've really been back to it though, but I have kept up with what's been added and the various mob votes and such.

Used to play it a lot with my friends. Skyblock, survival you name it, we would just go out here exploring and building, how I miss that blissful experience.Nowadays we're all too busy with life which is a shame, but I still play it alone occasionally.

Funny thing is that these are not from Notch but from Hayden 'Dock' Scott-Baron (with Rena, Steve, Black Steve and Beast Boy) with a different art style.

In an alternative reality Minecraft would've had that logo
Minecraft_logo_by_Dock.png

Which is way more 2000's like (almost like a Flash game)

I kinda wish the final logo kept the blocky aspect but with grass instead of rocks.

What I loved is how it felt like a 8/16-bits game but with voxels.

I hate when a company changes the branding/age demographic and art style out of nowhere.

Maybe Microsoft wanted to appeal more to the kids (since it's nowadays more popular with them).

I've always wanted Minecraft to appeal to both demographics at least. More mobs also messes up the game balance. I feel that Minecraft should've let these for mods.

True, Minecraft isn't meant to be realistic. The color are dim and the terrain tried too much to look realistic when I wish for more floating islands and other stuff.

Minecraft is still one my favorite games. I honestly prefer the current state of the game than the Notch era. We've been having some very good content updates, like Caves & Cliffs, Nether Update, etc. The caves and the Nether used to be pretty empty, now they have some personality. I can understand why people doesn't like it tho. I think the game will continue to improve now that the mob vote won't be going to happen anymore (which means we maybe receive more mobs on updates instead of choosing only one option).
