So I'm currently playing Mina the Hollower. I think its really good!
Its made by the guys that made Shovel Knight. It plays mostly like an old 2D Zelda game, with more of a Castlevania setting.

Anyone else playing this game? What do you think of it?

YCG needs no introduction. I haven't played yet, but I'm sure it's absolutely stellar (even Shovel Knight spinoffs like Pocket Dungeon are amazing).

There's one side that absolutely loves it then there's me that notices it's a "souls like" and I immediately lose interest all together. But I will check it out eventually.

I've been waiting for the game since it was announced, but I didn't play it yet ( i hope I can play it and it doesn't end up like prime 4 )

Caught my attention too, haven't play it but i will at some point.

Its not really a souls-like just because you lose your currency when you die, and you can reclaim it.
Yes, Souls kind of invented that mechanic but one mechanic doesnt define the genre.
I mean, you can level up too but that doesnt make it a JRPG.

Its fun, you should give it a chance if you like 2D puzzle/adventure games and platformers.

This game, and ufo 50, are tempting me in to buying a switch 2.
The game basically has 8bit graphics. Pretty sure you could run it on a potato.

That may be so but unfortunately I only play on a Vita at the moment 😁

Shovel knight also had the same mechanic with gold, right?

I am glad it's doing great, but I have no interests at all. I tried the demo, and it wasn't gelling with me. Even after finishing it.

I was so excited to play this game but I wound up rage quitting to play the new Yoshi game. I want to love Mina but it keeps kicking my ass.

The game is so good. I'm really glad they devoted so many resources to this.

The difficulty is real, but I really think it's refreshing. So many zelda-style games are easy. Dying 8 times trying to clear the starter level takes me right back to playing Shovel Knight on my WiiU back when it released. YCG really knows how to elevate the design sensibilities of retro games.

That's what they say instead of "it's hard and kicking my ass". You should give it a try. It is difficult but overall a great experience.

I'm close to finishing the story and it's been a hell of an experience. Every dungeon feels fresh, weapons are great and force different playstyles, NPCs and story progression is really cool. This may be my GOTY honestly. One of the best zelda-likes, better than %99 of the zeldroidvania slop out there.
Also the atmosphere is immaculate.

I played it and it's quite entertaining, but I don't have time to finish it and try all the modes and difficult modes.

I heard there are a bunch of weirdos giving it bad reviews because the difficulty can be adjusted to the player's liking. What the hell is wrong with them?.

Just finished it today. Good game, but almost drop at the beggining, because it was too hard.

I'll get it soon.

I feel like corpse run was popularised by Demon's Souls but not really created by it.

Wait, if there's experience points and level up how is it not RPG?

I'd argue that it's not because an indie game is replicating NES or Gameboy like graphics that the engine would be necessarily demanding little to nothing but at least the devs are optimising their game well.

Because Zelda itself is a fairly easy franchise as a whole and you're supposed to become more powerful as you gain more items thus rendering it easy towards the end.

Dying 8 times trying to clear the starter level takes me right back to playing Shovel Knight on my Wii U back when it released. YCG really knows how to elevate the design sensibilities of retro games.
I'd also argue that a retro inspired game doesn't always have to have the exact same game design as actual retro games, it's up to the dev.

It has modern game sensibilities with a retro flair. Also there are settings you can tweak to your liking and change difficulty. You can turn on environmental damage, take half damage, deal less damage, add more checkpoints, less checkpoints, whatever you like.

Loving it so far! There was a point where I got stuck not knowing where to go, but then I noticed I missed exploring a rather obvious area and upon checking it out I got myself on the proper progression route. I'm on the fence on feeling whether or not this game should have a map of some sort.

These retro inspired games are reminders that chasing realism and high end graphics, while fine in their own right to be interested in, are not the be all and end all for gaming, and there are plenty of great modern games that don't require the latest and greatest hardware to enjoy.

Is there a game that did this mechanic before Demon's Souls? I always thought that was the origin of that.

Totally agree with this.
