"The AI-driven growth in the data center has led to a surge in demand for memory and storage. Micron has made the difficult decision to exit the Crucial consumer business in order to improve supply and support for our larger, strategic customers in faster-growing segments," said Sumit Sadana, EVP and Chief Business Officer at Micron Technology. "Thanks to a passionate community of consumers, the Crucial brand has become synonymous with technical leadership, quality and reliability of leading-edge memory and storage products. We would like to thank our millions of customers, hundreds of partners and all of the Micron team members who have supported the Crucial journey for the last 29 years."

Here's an "old man yells at cloud" post. Want to know the endgame? It's bad. Like there goes my way of riding out the apocalypse. You better hold on to anything remotely computing related even if it's just old parts. Hoard them like gold! I saw this coming years ago and it's why I still have a 13 year old Win 10 beater!

Here comes the "yelling at cloud" part. By 2030 all that will be affordable to plebs like us will be dumb terminals but with AI. You can't afford a "real" computer but you can rent from Sam Altman's cloud! Say goodbye to owning your data when your HDDs inevitably wear off. This is how piracy dies. This is how emulation dies. The internet too will be gone too for the children and copyright protection.

Guys. There's no bubble. They just want people to sell.

It's joever.
Yea, everyone keeps saying this will pop and prices will go back down... they won't. The same thing was said when the crypto bubble hit GPUs... well guess what? The bubble popped, and prices didn't go back down. High prices were normalized and that's where they're staying.

Same thing will happen with RAM/memory. The high prices will be normalized, and this is the new price. All these tech companies want us to be dependent on AI and cloud computing so they can sell us subscription services. This isn't going to burst, we're entering the era of "you will own nothing, and you will pay us a subscription fee for it."

I sometime wonder if most CEOs get off on crushing consumers out of everything because I have keep noticing this pattern since 2019. I feel like my apathy is increasing and my desire for all CEOs to go away to the sun is rising the more within each day. By the time this is over (if it ever is), I will have a negative reflex towards anything related to "AI" for the rest of my life. (Especially from Silicon Valley.)

Yeah over the black friday weekend all the 'open box' Kingston HyperX sellers on eBay sold out everything they had, unsurprisingly. $70 for 2x8 DDR4, and went up from there. Oloy bottom-tier Ram was going for $48 for 2x8 a few weeks ago on Amazon, then $68, then it was all gone. Newegg sales flyers should have just said 'why even bother' instead of the comically insane prices the market demands now.

Was wanting to upgrade my Batocera rig to AM4 (have an old 2700X), but the RAM situation is kind of throwing a wet blanket on the plan. Facebook Marketplace isn't looking too bad for used RAM at the moment. Plenty of listings on there and eBay by some who have no idea the sky is falling, for now.

And of course, the doomposting has kicked in...

Exactly. This thread has been basically hijacked by doomposters who have no idea of how this works. I bet that they're so full of "You will own nothing" fears that they haven't even bothered to look up the Dotcom bubble or Bitcoin bubble.

Your doom post may be all too real. And this makes me a sad panda. 🐼

I pray that this is a bubble. I actually want to be proven wrong so I can laugh at myself and be thankful that it didn't end the way I thought. Happened during COVID.

between this and the gay video game thread, awesome way to start the morning all things considered... ::goof

Thing about AI is, it can be used for good but right now it's being abused. And everyone is mad, and the structure of this abuse is weakening.
