I Finally got my MGS4 disc to work on my SONY PS3® because i have been dying to play this game for a long time. I have played bits and pieces of 1-3 (i need to go back). but also ive played MGS5 and Revengance but never really sat to play some of the older games all the way through. I was a dumb kid that didnt have patience sorry. But while playing MGS4 there is so much to appreciate in the story and cut scenes. Kojima knows how to really balance satire and down right horror really well across all his games. I mean playing death stranding was terrifying my first playthroughs because whats happening is truly scary its not in your face its really psychological which is what I enjoy. Also Im really getting into the groove of the gameplay the shooting feels amazing and even the laughing octopus fight kept me on my toes but was a really enjoyable first encounter. While i play throiugh the series I might make more post about them as i go along so i hope that is more than welcome and leave any comments on any thoughts!

MGS4 is when Kojima lost it and started getting really weird. Although it sort of applies to MGS2 as well. Not a fan of him anymore. Death Stranding is just him being weird with his celeb friends.
How come you arent a fan anymore?

Saying that Kojima lost his way makes absolutely no sense (especially since MGS4 concludes the main arc of franchise).

He must be one of those who fell in love with MGS1 and hated the rest.

Kudos for going back and revisiting some of Kojima's earlier work! I'm glad you had fun with it. :].

Love the gameplay, but the cutscenes even more so! I understand some people dislike cutscenes and just want to get straight into the action, but I've always appreciated games as multi-media products - If I get to enjoy a movie with my video game, then all the better! Especially one with a distinct vision and sense of direction.

If you enjoyed MGS4, I can't urge you enough to go back and play 1 and 2. MGS2 especially. It still amazes me just how prescient that game was, even 25 years after its release.

The 'Real Ending' to the mgs saga, to this day, 11 years later is so bizarre seeing people complaining about mgs v plot, i mean, yeah it sucks and it's inconclusive af, but it was always stated as another prequel game in the series, and even then the gameplay is quite awesome.

I could appreciate mgs iv a whole lot more if konami actually had given a damn and already ported it in the wake of the 8th generation, by this point the ps6 will be out and mgs iv will still be locked on the ps3.

Btw, isn't a bit weird how underutilized mgs iv final battle is for memes? I could mention a few instances in fiction were two old men fight in an "epic final battle" but it's seems the only memes people remember aboug mgs are the game overs and the parody dubs.

MGS 4 is the last good game from Kojima, after that Im sure he is just making shit up and see how long it takes for people to call him out.

Ok, MAYBE Peace Walker. I have nothing against that game but cracks are starting to show.

Anyways, enjoy! And you might want to give MGO2 (MGS4 multiplayer) a try. It works on PS3 and it has an active community.

Idk it was a good game but a lot about it annoyed me. The weird ads at the beginning, the long incoherent cutscenes, the way they portrayed Meryl and the villains. I am glad they finished the saga though.

The problem with Phantom Pain wasn't that it was just any prequel, but that it promised to fit well into the Metal Gear from MSX (and failed to do so).

Well I think the issue with that last statement is that if you look up anything up for mgs4 it’s mostly from years ago due to it being locked to the ps3 and people not having access to it or recording software for that gen was poopy

From what i remember there were at least those 1080p ps3 cameras that went to popularize the ps3 AR games (or whatever) kind of like the ps2 eye toy, but the ps3 one did stick and went to create and make astro bot a gaming icon (or at least a prototype version of him)

although i don't know if said cameras were available back in 2008-09 or went on sale years later around the end of the 7th gen like the ps3 slim or Nintendo's Wii mini, in any case mgs iv looks poopy in most game recordings because it has that trademark 7th gen 720p 30fps look, oddly specific for sure, but when you look at games like the uncharted trilogy, infamous, resistance, etc, you get the picture, don't get me started on those 16:9 game videos cropped to 4:3

One of my favorite videogames of all time (with Metal gear solid and Snake eater too, since we are talking about MGS), plus I like both snake and raiden (Guess I'm one of the few who also likes the latter XD). More people should play MGS 2 sons of liberty as the game is actual despite the fact it came out in 2001

I liked the game, but still the weakest against the other main 3. not a bad game but for me the least interesting to replay.

I liked the Rex vs Ray part very much

Not a fan of the story one bit. In fact I hate it. But the visuals are fantastic and the gameplay is very fun. The Metal Gear mech battle is still one of the hypest moments in gaming imo and a complete dream come true as a fan of the franchise since I was 13 years old.

Metal... Gear...!? Loved mgs4. Felt it needed to put more effort into european section especially since they cut out the sewer gameplay. Mgs5 is good and the thrid missing part to mgsv really adds to that "phantom pain" feel. U know it's supposed to be there, but it's not. Mgs4 did great in everything could for that generation. Wish they used liquid's voice and didnt retcon the sorrow's effect on ocelot.

Falls apart after Act 1. Act 2 is okay, but it's level design could have been less spacious. Act 3... Act 4 is literally a rehash of MGS1, but without human guards that you can mess around with. Act 5 should have been longer.

Pretty easy to see why some people preferred Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Grand Theft Auto IV, Left 4 Dead, and Fallout 3 back in 2008 over MGS4, yet ironically the only game I'm actually looking forward to this year is MGS4 on Master Collection Vol. 2 instead of GTA6.
Ninja Gaiden 2, best game of 2008!

They could not convince me the goofball support team from MGS3 turned out to be who they were revealed to be. Big Boss being shoehorned in as well so he didn't go out like the monster he became felt cheap. Whatever plan Hideo might have had for this game went out the window for a desperate and ridiculous attempt to tie this game to MGS3 because it was so popular. It was easier to do that then to write something original and I'm sure Hideo opted for this path because he was just done with MGS after 3. IIRC it was pretty well known back then he was vocal enough about wanting to move on to other projects and Konami would not let him. And its a shame because if they had he likely would've come back to his baby at a later time under his own volition and delivered a much better story. But we got what we got.

Yes there were some retcons and i wish metal gear rising did tell jack's story of how he got Sunny. Konami either pushed too hard or Kojima was too crazy to contain but MGS4 is still a good game on its own. I too look forward to the rerelease and curious what changes are made considering brandnames were used in game for some items. Mgs4 also may have beem designed to feel more openworld, but its still pretty linear. I think MGS5 is what Kojima really intended for MGS4 traversal/exploration but couldnt implement cause of limitations at the time. I liked the beast unit but the backstories that all sound similar for the beast unit seemed lazy. i could tell parts of MGS4 may have been rushed or cut due to time or space limitations. I still really do like mgs4 tho. It definitely is good enough to stick in my heart and mind. :) mgs2 is better. Mgs3 is best! Mgs5 is cool. And mgs1 is memorable/legendary and metal gear 1 and 2 is retro and peace walker is special. ❤️

Its funny in that MGS4 was more cutscene with a lot of talking than gameplay and MGS5 was a lot of (great) gameplay with little to no talking (info/story mostly relegated to audio tapes) and a few cutscenes. Kojima knew what he was doing. Konami could have been like, "mgs4 had too many long cutscenes!" and Kojima was like, "ill show you" or "i give u what u want with mgs5 + real life microtransations (not drebin points)" and they still get rid of him. Maybe "did u rike it?" was truly an honest question. I love Kojima, still havent played Death Stranding 2. I loved ds1during covid as it was fitting and Kojima has a nack for predictimg the future. Even when he doesnt want to.

Personally, I think the best thing about MGS4 was its online multi-player, since it made better use of most of the game's mechanics that the single player mode didn't. Too bad the playerbase was toxic due to MGO's ranking system.

I’m apart of that discord I gotta hop on there sometime after I update my ps3 to the latest HEN. It looks really fun plus I feel like these types of toxicity happen when games have such a small player base it’s either you get good while playing with high ranking people or just drop it entirely. Kinda like GUNz or any old Battlefield. The only people playing these anymore are Vets or people that actually want to learn how to play to beat the Vets

I'm one of those people that loves MGS1 and hates the rest.

Maybe I'm missing something, but it doesn't make sense to me how Campbell is a completely different person in 2. I feel like all of his personality was removed, and you can say it's because it wasn't him, but then why didn't Rose notice? That part bothers me about 4. Rose moved in with someone that she didn't even know well enough to notice he was replaced.

2 made me curious enough to complete 3. I think 3 was okay but I didn't like any of the characters. The sniper fight was a really cool expansion on the Sniper Wolf fight.

I didn't totally understand what made The Boss so important, but that one's on me. Just read a synopsis and I get why she had to be killed by Big Boss now. I think if that hit me the way it was intended, my opinion of the game would be stronger.

I couldn't finish 4 because I couldn't buy any of what it was trying to sell me. It felt completely disconnected from the understanding of everything that came before it.

Yeah and in MGS4 they made Mei Ling's character totally removed of her chinese accent/charm and Snake never said a thing or noticed when "Dr. Madnar" was brought up as the scientist who can help Raiden. (Referencing metal gear 2: solid snake).
