I was always curious about why the Psycho Mantis section of the game hasn't been properly researched, despite being such a prominent part of the game. I've found a lot of misinformation over the years and no definitive answer about how it all actually works.

So I finally decided to take matters into my own hands, getting into the game files despite having very basic knowledge about programming and such. I started documenting all my findings on TCRF and I've already made a lot of progress, BUT there's still a long way to go. I tried getting attention to it in some MGS communities awhile back but I guess there wasn't enough interest.

So if anyone wants to help, please do! For now I'm mostly interested in categorizing games according to Mantis' lines, especially in the japanese and Integral versions. Or if you want to double check what's already in there, be my guest!

I'm not to sure about the specifics of Psycho Mantis in MGS, but here was a n infographic I found detailing how and what games got read off your memory card and what they did. Not sure it it's all of them.

This broke my immersion when I played via emulation but I love the concept on paper.

I kind of miss this era where you could "connect" games together via that (or the DS with the GBA port).

Modern games should have an easier time yet they barely do that.

It feels like, when you live in a tourist heavy city, and you never go see the the famous places that attract those tourists.

From what I understand, Psycho Mantis mainly comments on a couple of things:

- The number of times you have saved. For low saves, he says something like "You have not saved often. You are somewhat reckless, or a coward." If you save many times, he says something about you being prudent. Funnily enough, the number of times you have saved is also recorded on the MGS2 "Mission Failed" screen as one of the secret tallies, listed as "prud ence".

- The number of times you have died and have triggered an alert. If you have died more than 9 times, he called you a "poor warrior", and if you have triggered more than 9 alerts, he will refer to you as "a careless man". If you have played skillfully he deems you "a highly skilled warrior" and says that you're "the type to kick their tyres before leaving the house".

- Any saves on your memory card for other PS1 Konami games. This is what I'm least familiar with, but I'm pretty sure he will name-drop Castlevania if a Symphony of the Night save is present on your memory card. And a few others too. I'm not sure which.

incredible they had the time to go so deep in that part;
memory card and controller psychologist session :)

This is part of what I was saying about misinformation. It's true those games can be detected, but not in the same versions of the game.

In the japanese version it only mentions Tokimeki Memorial and Policenauts, but if you have Policenauts and Snatcher there's a special message by Kojima. But no Snatcher isn't mentioned at all.

In the international and Integral versions it mentions Suikoden, Azure Dreams, Castlevania and Vandal Hearts. But the last one isn't mentioned in the US version, so people think the line was unused, when in fact it is used in non-US versions.

I had no idea Tomba 2 had hidden stuff based on your Tomba 1 save, that's so cool!

Me neither, or any of the stuff involving Legend of Mana. It's crazy how effective this kind of stuff is at making me want to play the older entries in the series, since it will give me exclusive bonuses in the later entries. I kinda want to play both Suikoden games now, and the old Armored Core games (in spite of how much slower the older mechs are then NEXTs).
