Metroid Megathread

I'm so unsure if to restart Metroid Prime 3 on the vanilla stand-alone version or return with the Trilogy without having no idea what's going on since it has been 1 decade and half since I've played it. đź’€

I'm currently fully into Legends Z-A, but by the times MP4 will be out I'll be...not ready. Like, wow, this game is actually happening for real, just like KH III did and disappointing all of us on the narrative.
I think you should try it out. Give yourself two hours, play, and ask yourself at the end if the game is worth it to keep playing.

I can only smile and shake my head with the overall lukewarm fan reaction to Prime 4. We definitely waited far too long for this game, and that will always be held over its head.

I don’t know and can’t judge on if the game will be a solid continuation on story or dungeon exploration. What I will say is that, like many others, I was more exasperated and disappointed at the direction with the bike. It’s certainly visually ridiculous, but that’s not my issue. Nor is my issue “they won’t be able to fill the world with enough stuff!”, although that’s certainly possible. I’m frustrated because it seems to be yet another AAA game that feels the only way to use the technology given to the team is to make a more open world. Even if handled well, that feeling of “they only went this direction because they got stuck on how to make this game stand out from the others, so they went with a tried and true tactic” will always hang over it.

I remember that when Dread came out people praised it for being a return to form for games (a genuinely hard 2D adventure game with great visuals that showed off the system, that didn’t have any pesky updates or microtransactions to get in the way). Plus, it was clearly made with love and was made by a smaller team, so that care and attention was something you could really feel while playing. Dread was so good that it dethroned Metroid Prime 1 as being my favorite Metroid game and my second favorite game of all time.

I’m still excited, but I’m less excited than I was before. Thank goodness it’s not Switch 2 exclusive, otherwise I would have been furious and would not have played. As it stands, I’m still excited to finally play Prime 4, but I’m not enthusiastic about the game and I’ll wait for independent reviews from people whom I trust with Metroid before I consider spending the big bucks to buy it for myself. The last thing I’d want is to waste $70 on a game that I won’t even come close to finishing, after all.

dread was made by the original creator of metroid leading a team that had experience with the genre.

prime 4 is made by a team at retro that i think is relatively newer with not a lot of people that worked in the genre previously. dont quote me on that, and also yeah development hell

This is true. The difference in teams is obvious, and not necessarily good or bad, but you can tell the difference in mindset.

I’m pretty sure Yamamoto is involved with Prime 4 as well, but obviously super hands off since it’s being made in the west.

Honestly, the whole story of Yamamoto taking responsibility for Other M is so painful but beautiful. I’m glad he changed his mind on Samus as a character, even if I feel like he may be over correcting a bit. It’s just nice to see a redemption for him and the series, and Dread was the ultimate runback game for the series to come roaring back to prominence with.

Federation Force was a badly timed spin-off but I agree.

Although I believe Team Ninja were able to make a good game, just not a Metroid one. I'm almost surprised they haven't made a Metroidvania Ninja Gaiden game.

Very much agree! Most of the worst things elements of Other M, both in gameplay and story, came from Yamamoto and Nintendo.

As an example, the choice to make the game a sideways wiimote title was Yamamoto’s idea, as he thought it may make the game more accessible to those intimidated by vast control schemes. It’s a false, but not uncommon notion from the time (seventh generation into the eighth generation) that afflicted many games at that point. If Team Ninja wasn’t beholden to that game design aspect, I have no doubt they would have made the game playable with Nunchuck and possibly the classic controller.

And lessons were learned, as both the Mercury Steam games make great use of all the controls on both their respective systems for a suitably hardcore experience.

Small note: I’m shocked that Samus only ever gets paid for her work in the first game. And, even then, only when played on FDS. I guess it’s not necessary information, but I would like to see Samus get sent on a mission where she actually gets something for it (aside from Prime 2, which she gets to have the satisfaction of saving a world rather than nuking one lmao)

I still don't understand that choice of changing Samus when she was doing fine in the games before. Wanting to follow AAA trends can kill a franchise's identity. I almost feel like it was a Metroid game made for Tomb Raider fans (not to say that the reboot games weren't good of course, just that aside from a woman that explores wild areas and shoots at enemies they have little in common) rather than Metroid fans.

It works for simpler games like NSMB, Kirby RTDL and DKC Returns (all 2.5D platformers) but not for more intricate games. Especially when Metroid Other M has first person aiming.

I still find it sad that we basically never got a new 100% Nintendo produced game since Zero Mission. Same with Starfox since Lylat Wars.

I think money isn't the point of the series, of course she has a life outside of missions but honestly I don't finish the game to see her getting paid.

While it mainly matters only if a game is good, I see your point. And it’s a point that applies to most of Nintendo’s IP.

Aside from Mario, Zelda, Splatoon, and Animal Crossing, what long running series are even made in-house anymore? I guess they took DK back from him being loaned out to other studios for 30 years, so now he counts, but it’s strange to think how few Nintendo series are made by their in-house studios. Even Smash Bros. is a Namco Bandai project :p.

Of course, as long as the final product is good.

I think that the internal studios of the company shifted for the bigger IPs (like Mario, Zelda, AC and others) whereas they are outsourcing the "lesser" ones (like Kid Icarus being made by Sakurai's own company rather than the original team of the first two and Punch-Out Wii being made by Next Level) because they are taking ressources and time from the main studios...

Even the team behind Mario Odyssey and DK Bananza is relatively recent.

I canceled my pre-order. After seeing the nerdy, goofy, non-stop blabbering by Myles, I'm done. IT's bad enough it has a vast empty, ugly "open world" desert for no real reason other than to showcase a "cool bike", but to add a dorky guy mansplaining to Samus and talking like a cringy millennial marvel character is far too much for me. the reviewers are right...it's not a dark, quiet, moody, atmospheric isolation game anymore. I'm out.

Haven't seen the trailer lately... is it really that bad?

Ah yes yes of course, just what I wanted in my scary Metroid game 18 years in the making.
More dialog.
From the Comic Book Guy, no less.

It feels like I'm seeing a Metroid fan who has seen Samus for the first time.

I feel like its a bit soon to judge the whole game on this one side character. I understand why hes so hated but i think its best we wait until we know how much hes in it
Definitely the right mindset.
I’m not a superfan but I understand why this makes people worried as it comes across as pretty not-Metroid.

This is fair play, not much on the big N these days, but if i were, i'd probably feel the same based on your explanation here.

not saying i wont play it, but now i have to wait and see to how much screentime this character takes up and if there is an option to turn his "hints" off
