Metroid Megathread

Call me weird but I'm pretty glad they've toned down the "pin-up" pictures of Samus a bit since then.

Not to say she cannot be shown with her zero suit or casual outfit.

Also she looks more badass with her armor

Yeah, in a sensitive way I can understand why they decided that. If I'm not mistaken last time they did was with Zero Mission. Super Metroid was definitely the last time she was the most revealing.

Ironically I think her zero suit is actually more suggestive.

I'd still like to see more stories about Samus' life outside of her missions (like in some artworks), showing a more human side to her (in a better way than Other M I say)

Metroid games are about her fights so I would never expect a narrative adventure game obviously.

Sadly Nintendo has only released one manga so far, describing her early life in the colony before the tragic incident that would lead to what we know today.

Totally agree but also taking it further;
I really don’t mind eye-candy most of the time but I think the Zero Suit kind of destroyed Samus and always felt tasteless, they really didn’t need to doll her up and it takes way too much precedence in actual media to be just a little side-thing, and it annoys the hell out of me because it comes off like they didn’t have faith in Samus being able to carry a game by just being her stone-cold power armor heroine.

Samus’ personality was always that she was tough-as-nails and they didn’t need to remind us so bluntly that ”umm she was actually always a smoking hot brain-damaged babe underneath”. It was one thing when it was just a little end-screen thing, but forcing that boring endgame mission in Zero Mission and having he be all vulnerable always felt nasty to me.

It also leads into why I don’t like Fusion. I hate the trend of retroactively writing cool/hard characters as like traumatized or whatever. It’s such a cheap way to add some lame amount of depth to explain why they’re cold, and the zero suit stealth mission is like the practical version of that. Removing all her power and putting her in an embarrassing skintight outfit where every encounter means death.

Lately I've had an urge to go back to Metroid to cool down after spending a lot of time on Silksong. I've been playing through Fusion on my phone (already beat it once, doing it again) and AM2R on my laptop.

I gotta say, AM2R is genuinely one of the best games I've played during the past few months. I love how much it plays like Zero Mission, strikes right back home.

Also got this one last week, for my Vita, and also really impressed with how good it plays, looks and feels. Also brought to mind Zero Mission for me aswell.

I've only played the V1.0 so far.

I may redo it with the latest update thanks to the launcher.

On the other hand, are there mods like Zero Mission and/or Super Metroid with that engine?

I totally believe that, if they changed the assets, they could make an indie game with that engine.

I'm so unsure if to restart Metroid Prime 3 on the vanilla stand-alone version or return with the Trilogy without having no idea what's going on since it has been 1 decade and half since I've played it. 💀

I'm currently fully into Legends Z-A, but by the times MP4 will be out I'll be...not ready. Like, wow, this game is actually happening for real, just like KH III did and disappointing all of us on the narrative.

I really gotta get around to trying this one out. I still replay the original Metroid 2 once or twice a year cause I love it so much and while I enjoyed the 3DS remake, I had a lot of issues with its presentation and structure that made it feel like it missed the point of what made Metroid 2 special without expanding on what it lacked. Everything I hear about AM2R makes it feel like the ultimate fangame as far as expanding on the original goes.

I can't talk for the original because i've no played it, but I can say that it certainly hits the nail on it's Zero Mission roots

I don't get what kind of issues Samus Returns had though. Sure, it felt more like a Metroid Prime game in 2D to me than a regular 2D Metroid game but it's still a good experience.

I also believe that remakes don't have to be 1:1 replications of their source material to be good.

Eeeeh, idk, agree to disagree about the "Metroid Prime but 2D" statement. If it was for the sfx and jingles, sure, they were definetely there from what I remember (mostly the item obtained one).
The budget was definitely more limited and the graphics and settings for Samus Returns was average to ok to best imo. I can't blame much MercurySystem since they definitely had a budget while with Dread they went full out and made one of the best games.

Also thank god that both AM2R and Samus Returns weren't 1:1 replica to the original lmao. The Game Boy original was built with limitations in mind and it was much more linear (way more than Super Metroid).

I'll explain:

The full 360° aiming is clearly inspired by the way to aim in MP (unlike the front, up, crouched, diagonal up and diagonal down with their crouched variants from 2Dvanias).

Also the fact it uses the Magmoor variant of the hot areas as well as
seeing Ridley in an almost Meta Ridley form with one of his phases taking from it
makes it the game that was the missing link between mainline Metroid and the Prime series.

For a 3DS game it looks good. Sure, technically MGS 3D, Resident Evil Revelations and perhaps the N64 Zelda game remakes are more impressive but for what is a secondary franchise from Nintendo it has a good art style helping it.

AM2R aside from some features (and the tower area being remade) still felt closer to the original game whereas Samus Returns has tried to bring some Prime elements to the mix.

I can see that handheld Metroid games were a bit more linear (RoS and Fusion).

Its a great game! I just didn't like the overly bright and inviting aesthetic. It didn't really expand on boss fights in the way I wanted and the two brand new fights are ones I dislike for various reasons. The digger because its just kinda boring and the final boss because I'm of the opinion that him not being in the original was kind of cool and I loved how low-key the ending was in general. Shoehorning him in at the 11th hour to cut through the atmosphere was fine and at least the fight was fun, but I'd prefer it not have existed.

Also weird things like the DNA machine that sort of make sense to exist but are also somehow more silly to me than the original's already absurd excuse of routine earthquakes.

I've played SR three times, twice to 100%. Love that game overall! It just feels like it removed/undermined a lot of the original's intentional and unintentional attempts to be unique within the franchise without doing too much to really standout aside from the fun parry mechanic.

Well. Metroid can possibly be my favourite game franchise ever. It's so perfectly made (although some expectations can be made cough cough Other M cough cough), I think I can find good stuff to talk about every single game. Also I can't stop playing randomizers because they are fucking perfect due to the replayability of them all. Peak Metroid is Fusion and Prime 3, don't judge me. Or do, ask me about what opinions I have on the franchise, I am quite the nerd for this stuff lmao.

Fusion's dialog always seemed to me like the writer's barely disguised wet dream Samus fan fiction that Other M dialed up to 11. None of the games after Super Metroid and Prime 1 really felt the same as the earlier titles and I've never really been a fan of the direction the series has gone and seems to continue to go down.
