Mega Man Megathread

Actually, there's one similarity between them, and that's that their personalities change between games.
Ohhhh that one totally slipped my mind. I should’ve mentioned it.

My Mega Man experience started with the Mega Man X Collection on Gamecube. I started with X1 and I really enjoyed it. Then I've played and beaten X2 and X3, I've at least played X4 and X5, X6... is bogged down by questionable design choices. Then I got the Anniversary Collection which had 1-8 and the 2 Arcade games, and really enjoyed them, and then I had 9 and 10 on Wii, and enjoyed them as well. I've also played and beaten the 5 GB Mega Man games, and I've played Legends 1. I do have X Legacy Collection 2 on Switch, but the only game I've played on it so far is X8, which I find pretty decent, but also really frustrating at points (Dynasty).

I've been digging Mega Man & Bass for some time, and while it may be insanely hard, it got a really good ost. The one that was stuck in my head for a long time (and still is) is the intro theme, and especially remix from PrincessZelda2020

You didn't miss much skipping x7.

If/when you play Legends 2 I strongly recommend the patched version here, not tried it yet but wish I had played this version, as it improves a very grating section of the game:

Finally don't forget to try the Megaman Zero series. It's one of the reasons (as well as aria of sorrow, and metroid fusion) that I rate the GBA as the best handheld of all time.

I will keep that Legends 2 patch in mind.

Isn't the Zero series the most ball-bustingly hard one, or is that just the first game?

Oh, because I've seen videos from J's Reviews and KNIJohn about how Zero 1 wants you to build up your Cyber Elves to help you out, but then the game punishes you for using the Elves by lowering your rank, which seems counter-productive.

Yeah. It's like Inti Creates realized that Cyber Elves were OP, but instead of tweaking or removing them, they hoped that the rank penalty would discourage people from using them.

So you either ignore the Rank and use the Cyber Elves... or ignore the Cyber Elves and focus on the Rank. Either way, you're going to end up ignoring one of the game's core mechanics. Granted, I have heard that Inti Creates did improve on that for the sequels.

Yes, they improved on this in Mega Man Zero 3 by introducing Satellite Elves that can be used without affecting the rank.

Yes that's right, but even with that, Megaman Zero 3 is arguably just as hard or harder that Megaman Zero 1, especially if you're going for an S rank.

Yeah they're tough, but mastering the levels and bosses was very rewarding. Played on original hardware back in the day, and getting S ranks without the use of cyber elves was quite the challenge. Perhaps just beat the game normally the first time around and, if you liked it enough to replay it, focus on rank. I don't recommend trying to S rank on first run, it'll perhaps ruin the fun. Great games, don't let the difficulty put you off!

Honesly megaman zero collection is pretty much the only one I feel like improved the experience of the original across the board. I think the checkpoint system is pretty nice, and the casual mode isn't a terrible way for a newcomer to try it out. I'd hope it would generate interest in normal difficulty run later, but I know not everyone is up to that challenge.

The ranking system in MMZ is somewhat forgiving. You only need to get A rank to unlock moves and the game will hand it to you if you complete the level fast and getting hit 3 or 4 times at max, maybe more.

The problem starts when you are going for S rank because you have to play pretty much perfectly, maybe getting hit once or twice, but since the game ranks you on an average score between missions, once you drop from S rank, you aren't going back unless you score 100 points at the end of every mission.

As somebody who tried to get A ranks for EX skills, that's just wrong.
For real? I found out that if you beat the level fast enough, getting hit doesn't affect you as much. Granted, this is if you beat the intro level with an S rank and by the time you finish all main stages, your rank will drop to B but you will have the EX skills anyway.

I was browsing through here and just want to say that I was such a huge dork for Mega Man as a kid, especially the X series.

But I see the usual nonstop Mega Man X7 hate that claims that it's the worst in the series, and I think it's still deserved, BUT WE GOTTA GIVE X7 A BREAK!

Sure, it's bad. Sure, it's a disaster for most of it. It even sucks. It's a stupid game with stupid bosses and it tops it all off with a stupid plot.

BUT I think X6 is worse just because it's boring. At least X7 is funny bad and it even shoots for the stars and tries doing something new. I mean, it does it all poorly, but it's something!

I know there's a big speedrunner following for X6 and it's weirdness since there's so many tricks you can pull off with it, BUT X7 HAS SOUL!

I think X6 > X7.... The best thing about X7 was it's trailer.

I loved the X series especially X4. I was so excited for X7 but when I came to playing it I couldn't bring myself to finish it or even getting halfway through it. Boring, and terrible design, annoying enemies, unsatisfying controls and game mechanics, motion isn't fluid at all. Slow and clunky in a bad way.
Capcom made brilliant 3d Megaman games a few years earlier, Legends 1 and 2. And to be honest those were large scale games with a focus on story, but even so, the combat was way better and smoother and faster. The X games are supposed to have much better combat, made up of short levels meant to be bursting with great visuals, music and smooth, slick and challenging gameplay. It's totally unacceptable that X7 came out the way it did. Even hitting with the Z saber felt so clumsy, it was a terrible transition to 3d.

At least movement in X6 felt smooth and slick, fast and satisfying combat. Music was decent. And it didn't feel like a chore.

But having said all this, I once again recall the excitement from seeing the trailer, and I will give X7 another chance :) will report back once I try it again

HAPPY BASS DAY!!!

Let's spend this day celebrating the best boy! I think Bass deserves a bouquet of flowers, even if he's a little embarrassed about it...

(Totally not me spending so much time drawing Bass and then forgetting to draw flowers in the bouquet, lol.)
