Silent Hill 2 and 3 both feel like games that weren't made to actually be played. While the music is amazing, the ambient sounds, controls, and atmosphere (especially in the other world) feel grating and miserable to the point where it's a surprise that these games were sold as commercial products. This is all especially true with SH3, which is one of the most unwelcoming games I can think of. Yet, I love both of them so...

Since nobody is mentioning them; the Corpse Party games are tragically depressing af. I've only really played the 3DS remaster of the first game, but in my experience it was pretty dark and depressing from all the deaths in it

Siren. Once you breach the difficult gameplay and fragmented story, you are dealing with characters that are... Well, I guess you kind of have to play it

I don't know about the beauty part, but Manhunt is oppressive and dirty in an appealing way. So is God of War 3 if you engage with the story. Gears of War feels like you're defending the last bubble of life from armageddon, but only the first game.

theyre not visually dark or oppressive but two that surprised me in how bleak and all around grim their tone gets throughout were Owlboy and especially Iconoclasts. i would say the direction of the stories sticks out all the more for how bright they look at a glance.
