Love in games

I only like well-developed romances like Fei and Elly from Xenogears or the ones from Dragon Quest V or funny moments while the protag gives a shit the romantic feelings like Waffle with Alicia and Terria from Tail Concerto or Kite with Blackrose and Terajima from dothack IMOQ

in other hand... I don't like boring romances like Red and Elh from Solatorobo(plus one-sided and huge age gap 💀), Tatsuya and Maya from Persona 2(I glad that the game allows you to choose anyone but damn... not her, she is like a older sister for everyone) and then... there's Persona 3-5 romance mechanic...

Good luck getting love stories you actually gonna remember for years to come in any videogames. Well developed ones are such a rarity already, the ones that could make an impact in your IRL even less so.

If it is portrayed in a way that meshes well with the rest of the game and isn't some cheap way to enable smut push and promote sales, I'm all for it.

if it serves the story and shapes the characters, sure why not. It's not my favorite subject matter in games, but when I was a kid FF7 was the first one to convince me to be open to it instead of just being all blasty blasty slashy slashy all the time

If love is well developed and justified, it's fine to me.

I confess I don't really go to video games to get my romance fix so I mostly don't really care even when it is plot relevant.

I think it boils down to the fact that, for me, video games are not really the optimal way to convey a love story as its main focus (I'm aware of VNs and Dating Sims tho). In the end, games are games and there are other factors that hold my attention.

To not to say I never liked romance in video games, I would say I really liked the relationship of Tidus and Yuna form FFX and Lenneth and Lucian in VP1.

If we're going with a little less strict definition of love, I'd say that Portal 2 pretty much is one

Find someone who will love you as much as Space Core loves SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE

i am not mutch for love in game
because i never play dating sim games or visual novels that focus on love stories

most of the time love is just to forced or it just ruin the characters and story
in some game it just get to mutch with kisses and all that

if love is well develop and it just add to the storie than its fine

only 2 games i like the love relationship and how it did develop

valkyia profile lenneth
lucian and lenneth

valkyrie chronicles
welkin gunther and alicia melchiott

I'm a huge shipper, so whether or not characters are actually dating or not in a game, I'll always have the thought in mind of what two characters would smooch or not!

That being said, in terms of actual romance in video games, it's incredibly hit or miss. I can remember a few that I enjoyed off the top of my head; Valkyria Chronicles, some of the optional pairings in the various Fire Emblem games, BlazBlue,
But when it's bad, it's BAD. Like, Shonen manga romance level bad.

Though. I would never trade it for the world! Love is a big part of my life. Any time my heart flutters for a man, fictional or not, an angel grows its wings..

I only care if the characters actually got the screen time to show how they act in their day to day and build their relationship, something that is rare.

Not just see some forced tease here and there when the main character is on screen with them and is just "they are a thing"

The most cheap one to write is the one where the characters know each other for ages and doesnt need any more plot around it other than the classic tease or "they care for each other" scene, since the bond moment was long ago there is little to show

"What do you think about love stories in games ?"

Often just meaningless fluff and I always wondered why do they add it to a games way to often ?
Take Visions of Mana which I recently started playing. The only thing love seam to have done it that game is cause a world ending scenario.

What does love add to Mass effect or Baldur´s gate 3 nothing but extra content maybe it could be a DLC instead.

But what games and anime love to pretend is how love can save the world. Well if that was the case we would not have had 2 world wars and several 1000 other wars.

I think if it´s a Dating sim then yeah love in games is Okey. But if if it´s a jrpg or an RTS do love need to be a plot point ? Maybe some times but I think it´s over used.

Im not saying it is bad. It´s just do it rely makes much of a different if it´s there or not.

You guys remember the game Transistor? I think that one has an interesting and good romantic arc.

Hmm, that illustration looks familliar...

May I ask from what game it is? It looks similar to the art in the game Teaching Feeling, perhaps the same artist?
Same artist yes, she is Ageha and the visual novel is "Buttefly Affection". This fucking awesome one in the pfp was made by @Nebulon_Galaxy tho

Damn yes, really great pfp. Now I realize it's the 'girl' from Butterfly Affection, makes sense now.

Checked out the game, seems like right my type of game, love the artstyle of this artist. Loved Teaching Feeling too.
Can't wait to play it when I have a bit of free time
