Losing your save

I don't know if you remember, but the PS2 game cases had a slot to put the memory card in.
I had reached before the end of Kingdom Hearts and saved the game.
After putting the memory card in the game case, I lent it to a friend and i forgot that I had the memory card there, that was the last time i saw the game and the memory card...

Happened to me for PSO on the Dreamcast. I just basically Gamesharked the hell out of it afterwards and became a no good duping cheater online. But I have an excuse! I was a stupid kid.

my magic times of PSO on DC had 8 VMUs, 8 chars with 3 of them over 900 hrs each - over 500 for the rest. bless you VMU chiLdren, I never lost a VMU sav back in ze day.

.........................................................DAMMIT STEAM!!!

I now back up as many saves locaLLy as I can. Steam Cloud is a dreary, rainy poopcloud indeed.

~(never)END(ing)~

It happened to me with Battle Network 3, 2 times actually, I can't bring myself to go through the final part of the game since it has so much backtracking everywhere I got really burned.

Recently happened to me when I tried to transfer my Mother 3 save file to a Miyoo Plus. Incidentally, I also lost my Mother 3 save when I was playing it on a phone emulator in high school fifteen years ago and switched over to a new phone. I downloaded a .sav file approximately at the same spot I was but still, fuckin bummer.

I always get discouraged when it happens and usually play something else for a week or so before coming back to the game I lost the data for.

I was never a fan of JRPGs, but I decided to give it a try with Dragon Quest VII on my modded PlayStation Classic. I got pretty far and was actually enjoying it, but then… my save file got corrupted. This happened more than a year ago, and I haven’t touched it since.

As a side note, this whole experience actually got me into finally liking Final Fantasy VII later on, so something good came out of it! Anyone else had a similar experience? How long did it take for you to try again after something like that?
My friend started playing Super Mario RPG, the og one while I backseated him. I was happy because I've finally managed to convince him to play a JRPG but then he lost his save because he is a doofus and since then I could't make him to play any RPGs.

nice Gravity Circuit sig. too bad about your friend but leading horses to water is never a guarantee (unless you BLAST IT down their throat with a SUPER-SOAK'RRRR)

Not too long ago, I bought a modified Arduino device from a well-known Chinese e-commerce site, to read my old PS1 mc using the tool MemCardRex. On a couple of them, there were two corrupted save files that I was able to recover without any problems. These were saves that dated back twenty years. This tool is incredibly useful, but I’m not sure if it’s possible to recover a save file from a pendrive using your PS Classic and then proceed with MCR.

If I lose a save in a game that I have been actively playing, it makes me depressed and I usually abandon the game for a long time. If its the game itself that corrupted the save, then I never go back to the game, because I can't handle the stress and paranoia that it'll happen again.

This literally happened to me with Xenoblade Chronicles 3D last week.

I have a shitty habit of just leaving my 3DS running and forgetting to save, and so i experienced the bug where you freeze up after using a group attack.

I was like 5+ hours in at the time so now I'm waiting to try it on Switch or something cus screw plating a game this old that still has a bug as bad as that in it.

I suffered the battery death on a Saturn in late 96 or early 97 and lost a lot of stuff. Iirc I bought an Interact backup cart and never really looked back. Though, one time I had been playing for several hours and at the time I had a girlfriend that I'd given a key to the house. She came in unexpectedly, walked over to the Saturn, and just shut it off. I asked what she was doing and she goes, "you can play with me now." I was like, "no I can't, now I gotta go redo all that shit I just did because you wouldn't give me 20 seconds to save it." So I sent her home and redid all that shit I just did.

I had a buddy at work in the late 90s who'd bought a PS1 and he was playing through Resident Evil. He would talk about how tough it was because every time he died, he had to start over. I asked why he wasn't saving it, and explained the ink ribbons and how they worked. Turns out, he didn't have a memory card. So I gave him one and he ended up finishing the game, heh. Poor guy.

That reminds me, this happens all the time, no matter who.
Remember to never lent something to someone except if you're prepared to possibly never see it again.

The time I lost saves I think were with emulators that don't flush or write the saves until properly closing the game and the emulator.

Like DS emulators or PCSX2, think Bizhawk and others do it too.

For example if the emulator crashes or if power in my home goes out.

When I was playing Donkey Kong 64, I got nearly the end of the game and somehow my save file got deleted. I was very angry and had to do all the awful mini games again. In fact, I remember being nervous whenever my N64 kept my saved files safe and it would either save my file or delete it entirely.

Lost mine of Rudra no Hihou ~5 months ago and haven't played the game since lol, but I intend to go back to that. Not right now.

just about any NES game i physically owned on a real NES lost it's saves, yep i held the reset button as i turned it off, didn't matter.
so i had to play most NES games in one sitting, zelda 1 for example. i never finished it the console would "reset" itself eventually.

in later times, i had my dreamcast main memory card die, stopped working entirely. lost all my progress of sonic adventure (100% of all missions) sonic adventure 2 (all but like 2 A ranks left) sonic shuffle (stupid amount of time to unlock everything on there) rush 2049 (so many time records), marvel vs capcom 2, power stone 1 and 2, capcom vs snk,SF alpha 3, gauntlet legends, crazy taxi, hydro thunder, crazy taxi 1 and 2 all those side missions, the one that made me mad the MOST, tony hawks pro skater 2, I did everyone to 100% all the characters! no cheats! thats a LOT of time. plus more games i can't remember i had a lot of them.
so i did the logical thing, bought a gameshark and basically blasted through all those games again, cause no way in hell was i playing all of those all over again.
also had about 6 memory cards after that and made copies on multiple cards. never had another memory card break or go corrupt after that one time though lol just my luck.

on my emulators i've lost saves many many times to where its just oh well, or i use cheats to catch up (i don't cheat normally on any game, ONLY if i'm replaying or lost save data or its an incredibly hard game)

my PS4 completely had to reformat the system corrupted entirely, i don't have PS plus, and never have, so i lost about 200 games save data in one moment. i made "some" USB backups but that was extremely longer games like disgaea (100 hours on every single one at least, 350 on Disgaea 4) and persona games. and wasn't recent. it was painful but i'm too old to care and it gave me an excuse to replay some games.

If I were you, I’d try to get myself some kind of lucky charm...

Losing your save is definitely the worst.
I feel like my saves are a lot safer (but not totally safe!) on PC though. Just one more benefit to emulation!

The drive is formatted by now. While I managed to recover some files, of course, the specific savestates and memory card saves for that exact game didn’t come through. ::dkapproves

How did losing a DQ VII file help you get into FF VII?

Also the first time I played FF VII, my file got corrupted right out of Midgar. I soon restarted the game cause I was very much into it.

speaking of old saves -- I have a ziploc bag of old PS1/PS2/Gamecube memory cards that are 20-25 years old. All my old save files from when I was a teenager.

What do we think the chances are that the files are usable in any way?

I would imagine they're still good? I recently checked my ones back home and they're still good to go.
