I've just beat Portrait of Ruin and am currently playing through Order of Ecclesia. While I adore Castlevania, I think I'd like to switch up the setting a bit after OoE. Could you please suggest any games set in Heian, Sengoku or Edo period Japan? I don't mind fantasy elements but I'd prefer a female protagonist/playable characters as I find it more immersive. Any console pre ps2 + psp and ds as those are the platforms my handheld can play. Thanks ::dkapproves

Hmm, I believe a game called Youkai Buster: Ruka no Daibouken may be up your alley, for the SNES.

Not completely sure if fits every single one of your descriptions, given it's in "feudal" Japan in HUGE quotation marks, but I believe you did also state that you're fine with some fantasy elements.

That's oddly specific, anyways you should try Pokemon Conquest if you want some feudal japan action, and for more broad recomendations, DS: Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword, Kirby Superstar Ultra and Sola to Robo, for PSP: Monster Hunter Portable 3rd, Power Stone Collection, Steambot Chronicles Battle Tournament.

Hmm, you may want to look into old Koei games since a bunch of them were set in the period, even if most of them focused on China. I second the Tenchu mention. Other than that nothing really comes to mind really.

Off topic but Order of Ecclesia is one of my favorite games in the series. It's up there with Aria of Sorrow.
OoE is my favorite so far but all the games I've played were great

Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assasins on PS1. Sengoku era. Male or Female selectable protagonists.

Kuon on PS2. Heian era. Three female protagonists.
Thanks but Kuon is PS2 ?

It wasn't quite clear to me if your device can run PSP, but Way of the Samurai came to mind. They are originally for the PS2, but there's a port of both games for the PSP under the name Samurai Dou Portable, which is available (english patched) on the repo.

Sengoku Rance!!!

It's technically a PS2 game, but there's a PSP port for it: Samurai Warriors: State of War. Takes place in the Sengoku period and you start with five playable characters, one of which is female. IIRC two more women can be unlocked by just playing, though the roster is obviously still male-heavy.

I already have it, thanks anyway. I've heard it's the worst musou on the psp, though ?

Pokemon Conquest? Isn't that the weird sengoku musou/pokemon collab game? I should try it out probably.
Edit: apparently it's Nobunaga's Ambition, not Samurai Warriors. Close enough!

Soul of the Samurai, Tenchu, Ninja, Brave Fencer Musashi are all ps1 games I'd recommend.

Maybe the goemon games on snes and n64, if you like musashi you'd like them

Tenchu 1 also has two playable characters as far as I know. Thanks!

If it can run DOS games, Cosmology of Kyoto is amazing, but it is clunky af.

Jesus, that's a little too eerie for my liking ?

Shinobido (is on PSP and PS2)

And The Dark Spire for DS

This one is a dungeon crawler and is hard as hell because your stats are decided by a Dice, plus it has the classical dungeon crawler difficulty.

I have it! Nice game

It looks interesting, but I'm still learning japanese :(

Welp i'm gonna go super obscure and mention samurai showdown rpg for the neo geo cd, you can play as male or female as a protagonist and each has their own basic story that develops into a larger story, i can't remember if the zakoru chapter was translated but i know the amakusa chapter was, story between the 2 is separate.
Female protagonist is difficult, but pretty much all of the tengai makyou games are set in classical era japan.

Checkout Shinrei Jusatsushi Tarōmaru for the Saturn. You play as a ninja and blow people's guts out with magic.

Gamshara is an arcade cabal shooter set in a steampunk-ish version of Sengoku Japan

Getsu Fumaden, Ninja Spirit and Genpei Tomaden are a bit more famous.

Guwange, Musha/Robo Aleste and Sengoku Blade are shmups set in a version of Feudal Japan

Oriental Blue is a JRPG with a fan translation for the GBA.

I tried it, didn't launch for some reason. Also it's "shodown" :p

(R Racing Evolution is also on GameCube, RR5 is unfortunately PS2 exclusive, and Ridge Racer PSP actually has an upgraded "sequel" on the same system that never released in North America, but did in Europe)
